How do you dress when you perform the shell game?
Do you dress like a gambler with an attire and a hat or something like that? Thanks. Michael |

Yup. Frock coat, fancy waistcoat (vest), pocket watch and chain, and Colt 45 (replica) and concealed Derringer . . the small gun is part of the shell game routine!

I'm usually wearing what I always wear for doing magic for people
a black shirt t-shirt that says King Size Magic in red letters on the front, american flag patch on the sleeve and "I broke your mind" on the back of the shirt and a pair of jeans
Hey I'm a magician, i've never told a lie.....oops:o/

Same as you do -- one leg at a time.

If performing - One step better dressed than the audience is always a good rule.
I hope this helps.

Bill, it is scary my innate sense of humor runs strongly along the same lines as yours.
I was going to say, "Left leg first." Bada boom.

Just for the record, I've seen how Euangelion dresses. Pretty snazzy for a preacher-man. Hey Bill!

Actually, I have two characters that do both legs at once. Merlin wears a robe, and my Scottish character wears a kilt.
The oldest Scottish joke in the world is: "Is anything worn beneath your kilt?" "Nay, everything is in perfect working order."

Some entertainers do characters and dress and play the part of a riverboat gambler and there is nothing wrong with that if the costume is quality and the performance fits in with the booking and the venue and the client is pleased.
Others like Jack Pyle looked like a modern gambler/magician. And dressed in the modern way. But one step better dressed than the audience. Part of being a professional and being seen as a professional is dressing like a professional when you are performing. Malini was noted as having his wardrobe dry cleaned and his shoes shined and then he could always get engagements.

Spot on Glenn. Also, clean hands and fingernails and fresh breath.

One of the funny things about some of the people that use costumes and do characters and dress and play the part like many the perform at renaissance festivals. Is that some don’t seem to want to keep the show on the stage. They seem to want to be that character all the time. And that can be a little strange if this is noticed by someone that wants to book shows. I did a showcase for a school some years ago and there were tables set up like a trade show.
This was where people from schools came through to meet and talk business and get the booking info from the entertainer. Then they had a show case room where many did their act - some used costumes. These people that did this act in costume was a renaissance theater group and then they went to the room with the tables and all sat around all day in costume. Playing their different parts in the trade show room and speaking in an English accent.- They did not book that much and I wondered if they dressed in their costumes and acted like that at home! One magician did his act in costume and it was impressive. Then changed into a business suit in the room with the tables - and he booked a full season. The point is that this magician wore a costume on the stage and showed them what the act looked like. Then when the show was OVER he put on a business suit to conduct the business of booking the show. That said to bookers of the shows - That was my act in costume. Now I am a business man and ready to book my show in a professional business way. The costume may be great for the show but remember there is a business side if you want to make money!
