I bumped into this trick and RONJO also has a very cool movie for this:
Here Video: http://www.ronjo.com/video_demos.htm# It's one hundred bucks, but I love the effect and since I like performing in front of children I need to have it. Or does anybody know a similar trick that is less expensive? |

Don't know of any other similar DBs. This one is made by Steve Axtell and is a high quality item. Here is Steve's web page.
http://www.axtell.com/illusions.html Steve also has CDs that have audio routines that you can use with the DB. He calls them "Ax-Traxs". The DB is not really a magic trick and I would caution anyone who would try to present it as such because it is much more effective if you interact with the animated character. Similar to a lot of magic, the dialogue (patter) and interaction that you use with the DB is what really make this a hit with children. Steve sells a smaller version of the DB (10"x12") for $80. Good luck. Doug

Sean Bogunia has a couple of similar products:Note Pad Surprise and the Ultimate Sketch Pad.
You might want to check them out as well as the Axtell board. http://ajopro.net/ump/catalog/product_in......ts_id=36

I guessed that it was not real magic, but neither is the Time Machine if you look at the facts. I like the tricks that depend on performing and don't need a lot of training, as well as the ones you need to be very careful (like the floating dollar bill). I also took a look at the "Note Pad Surprise," but I couldn't find a movie or even a picture. But the reviews look good. Any more suggestions if this is something to have? Kraminator |

Sean Bogunia demo his Notepad Surprise at the SAM convention in NYC this summer. I thought it looked great. The animated sheet is clearly seen to be the sheet that's ripped off the pad and handed to spec for souvenir.

Kraminator;
The Axtel DB does require some practice to obtain the maximum effect. To get animation from the eyes and mouth simultaneously it requires a little bit of finger coordination, but a little bit of practice should do the trick. There are several ways to switch the gimmicked board for the un-gimmicked one, depending on how, and where you perform, but I personally don't see the $35 benefit.

I have the Axtell board. I really like it, but as many have said, it takes some getting used to, as far as the moves to animate the eyes and mouth.
I have seen and played with the Sean Bogunia version, and I personally did not care for it. That is merely my opinion. I felt the animation on the Axtell board is much better. So, is it an easy prop to use? NO. Is it a killer effect if done properly? YES. I will warn you, however, that this effect is difficult to do without any voice amplification (if performing it for kids), because as soon as the eyes and mouth start moving, the kids will all start yelling. At that point, any routining is pretty much out the window if you have to wait for them to quiet down.

I use one and it is great for kid shows. Axtell just came out with a smaller version that is less expensive that you may want to consider. Ventriloquism helps but you may be able to get by with the drawing saying just a few word that don't require you to close your lips (hello, OK, see you later, etc.).
I never purchased the gimmick board. I never thought it was necessary to prove the board was not gimmicked. One idea I have used with the board is to write the words "Magic Show" or something similar on the board and have it displayed during the show on an easel. This way the audience has seen the board and it all appears normal. If the board/easel are in an area where the back can be seen, then you may want to use an ungimmicked board for the sign and do the switch prior to the start of the trick.

Anyone who has the mini version please post a review. I need something smaller than the big original. Thanks.

Disregard, I found a bunch of info on it on Kidabra. Seems like it is just as good (especially if you never have used the bigger one).
