I just had an absolutely great show this Saturday! It was a birthday party for an 8 year old girl. They had about 12 girls at the party and some of the parents. I was hired to perform my full package which included a 45 minute magic show, the Chair Suspension and a balloon animal class. The kids and the adults were all hugely involved throughout the show and I even got hugs from the kids afterwards. This was all in full view of the parents who had hired me. The birthday girls dad came up to me after the show and gave me one of the most enthusiastic thank you's I have ever received.
After the show, I analyzed the strengths and weaknesses as I usually do. In this case, I quickly came to realize that much of the positive response came from the initial warm-up. The kids really got into it by clapping, stomping their feet and yelling out the magic words before the show even got started. There are a lot of different ways to "warm up" an audience before a show. I thought maybe we could share some of those methods here. Kent

Laflin's Laugh-Lines offer a wide range of funny ones. One I really like is you tell the audience to stand up and raise their left foot, "We have started off on the right foot." The one I currently use I made up myself, it's basically a funny way to introduce everyone.

You know you are a magician when you have boxes full of lecture notes you have never read, but still are excited about going out and buying more.

You raise a good question and I am glad to see your show went so well for you. I like to try and warm up my audience the moment I meet them and get to the event and long before the show even starts.
If I can get the kids involved or have them help me or simply meet them and show an interest in what they are doing, I can break the ice with them long before the show time starts. This way they already get to know me as a fun guy and not someone who is going to lecture to them. A perfect example of this is when I do blue and gold dinners. These can be very crazy to handle with the kids all the same age and trying to impress each other. However, if I go in there and show interest by asking some of them if they would care to help me bring stuff in, then I am showing an interest in them and showing them respect as well. It breaks the ice right from the start. Kyle

Good idea Kyle with the warming up the kids before the show even starts. What a simple way to get kids more excited.

Kyle, Most excellent point. The "show" begins the moment the kids see you arrive.
Along those lines, I think arranging how the kids are seated is also part of the "warm-up." At birthdays, I get all the kids on the floor. I don't allow any of the kids to sit on chairs. Then, I make sure the birthday boy/girl is sitting in the middle of the front row. Finally, I have the kids scoot back a couple of times and then scoot forward until I get them exactly where I want them. All the time, I am saying funny things. The scooting is fun, but more importantly the kids are following my instructions and this establishes my authority. Also, I have the audience sitting exactly how I want them! Best, James |

Check out mark daniels warm up which goes about doing so quietly and gently...more info can be found on his dvd reading magic...no screaming, no yelling, no gag wands at the child's expense...his opening starts with a rainstick and he pulls it off...i've tried it and it works
