I just saw the movie ... I have one question for Speilberg... WHY ?
Great special effects ... that's it ... exept a horrible ending. We have all seen this type of movie for the past 7 years ... every summer their is a big blockbuster summer movie with disaster effects... the aliens ... not special or different ... I have seen TV movies with more interesting alien creatures.... |

I agree with you on the ending. It was just kinda "meh". The story seemed too perfect...everything just happened to work. Special effects were wicked, and the scene in the underground living space and the "search" robot thing was tense. I was hoping for the movie to keep me on the edge of my seat for longer than it did, though.

Is the story line different than the original, especially the ending. Do we win the same way?

Won't spoil it for everyone here though... I'd give it 3.5 as well... Dakota Fanning was great in it though...

I like the movie. I don't know what you guys are expecting when you go to a movie. I had a decent story, the acting was good, the effect where good... to sum it up, it was a good movie.
Again, what are you expecting from a movie? It is not supposed to change you, to make you a better person. It is supposed to make you jump around in your seat. Well, it did. |

I enjoyed the visual effects. They captured the exact imagery I picture in my head while listening to the radio play.
I do have two complaints however..Tom Cruise did nothing for this movie. They should have chosen an unknown actor to add to the realism. I just didn't buy him as a bluecoller guy. During the opening scene that shows Tom running a crane, the guy in the seat beside me laughed and said..." that guy hasn't worked a day in his life" I also thought the usage of a narrator at the end to wrap things up made it seem like they ran out of money, so they tossed in the narrator. I know that's not the case but that's how it played to me. It was a good movie but it could have been great! Nathan |

Sounds like the guy sitting next to you has never worked in the movie industry then. I have never worked harder than when I worked in that industry - showbiz is a LOT of work. Sincerely, Randy |

Roland, I think it's an issue of comparing the film to the original and the book. It's bound to happen and it has to color one's image of any given remake. I think that the plot in the Cruise version was sorely lacking when compared to the book and the original 1953 film. The characters in the Cruise film were 2-dimensional, at best...to me, they lacked realism. The main plot of the Cruise film seemed to focus more on a selfish, deadbeat, redneck's journey to becoming a protective and attentive father than on combatting an alien invasion. Gene Barry's character, and the character as written by H.G. Wells, had a more interactive role against the aliens in the original film. All Cruise did was run, run, run. Anne Robinson played a vital role as Barry's scientific aid and love interest in the original...a part relegated by Spielberg to Dakota Fanning. A great actress for her age and she did a phenominal job...but her role was limited to a frightened and traumatized child victim through the film...hardly the romantic interest. In my opinion, the Cruise version relegated the alien invasion to a background catalyst for Cruise's character reformation as a father. I expect this from Cruise, but I expected better from Spielberg. If you haven't seen this in the theatre yet...wait for the video. IMHO, Skip

Spielberg did make a few good films. No idea why this thing was made, as it was inspired by other movies and offered little new to the viewer. To be more blunt, go find a copy of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Volume Two, which covers the same ground, has the same aliens and tripods, and actually has a suspenseful story. Here's hoping Mr. Spielberg goes to making films again. Jaws was very good. Close Encounters was effective. ET was exceptionally manipulative and icky. Let's not forget the fun of the first Indiana Jones movie. I hope his next work is more interesting.

Thanks Jonathan, I was just about to say, basically, the same thing. Watch "2001 a Space Oddesy" and see what a movie can be. Movies can be a heck of a lot more than mindless entertainment. I enjoy mindless entertainment as much as the next guy, some of my favorite movies are just funny or downright silly. But Roland, don't discount the power of film and it's ability to move people. It's much more rare than it used to be, but every once in a while someone gets it right again.
As far as this movie...I'll take a pass. I don't imagine that I will ever see it. Here is something fun to do, I do it with books and movies. For every new movie or book you see or read. Check out an older movie or book. I try to stick to works that are generally consider classic. If your going to see "Bewitched" this weekend, check out a copy of "Angels With Dirty Faces" If your going to read the lastest Best Seller, go back and read a "Tale of Two Cities. Get some balance.

I was really secretly hoping that this version of The War of the Worlds was a sequel to ET. Tom Cruise was Elliot all grown up and having to come to terms with the return of the aliens. The aliens he met all those years ago were an advance scouting party looking for suitable worlds to conquer. The freindly healing personas just a ruse to lull us into a false sense of security. This time they reveal their true motives by invading the earth and harvesting humans. Would have made a much better flick I think. I won't know til next year when this turkey shows up on cable since I don't even want to waste a rental fee on it.

Books are books ....film is very different...... when making a movie that was a book... things must change..... Look what Kubric did for the Shining....... if he would done what was in the book it would have been silly......
And as story telling with film goes....... the Naration in War of the Worlds was a cheepo and easy way to tell the story..... not very exciting........nor artistic....... what a let down ....... |

Payne, that is a sort of modern 1980s type revision thing the comic book guys like Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Grant Morrison and a few others have done.
Consider the LXG2 story. All the more dark and terrifying for the use of biological weapons. Also the subplot of where they came from and how they looked first. A much better story told in only six issues. Same reason we won't see The Watchmen done on film for a while. And why the Pullman books have to get watered down... BTW, guess who went to an arts college and hung out with film students watching Liquid Sky, Blade Runner and snipits of many films. Very intesting to hear 2001 critiqued shot for shot as you watch it.

Well the ending was abrupt, even though I have to give it kudos for sticking to the original HG Wells idea. lots of plot holes (ie: aliens have been studying every aspect of our lives but conveniently looked over disease, pestilence, etc?). the whole father/son post-divorce animosity thing was so cliche and that kid was a complete idiot. the girl was the best actor in the bunch. the biggest flub in my opinion had to be the idiot mechanic who acts like nothings happening until the last second he gets fried.
basically I think of this pic as a symbolic representation of the proletariat struggle, may I point out the fact that Cruises character is constantly downtrodden by his rich ex-wife... take into account the fact that while cruises meager suburban Jersey house is trashed, the rich grandparents brownstone in BOSTON is unscathed. WHy in gods name would Boston be spared while suburban jersey is destroyed? Cuz the rich will never be put down, or so spielberg seems to say. in fact while we see most of boston burn in one scene but the grandparents home suffers little more dammage than leaves in the street and a lone BICYCLE. plus they still have electricity and the grandfather's wearing a *** blazer and khakis. Aliens... just another way to keep the poor poorer and the rich richer. |

Hello:
I saw the movie recently, and give it a very high score - probably 8 out of 10. The special effects were the best I've ever seen, even better than Jurassic Park. I'm glad the movie ended as it did, and not like "Independence Day" where the humans finally outsmart the aliens (I liked Independence Day very much, BTW). The scene in the basement with Tim Robbins was extremely well done, I thought. The comment about Tom Cruise not working a day in his life is way off. Tom Cruise's father deserted his family when he was around 12, and he had to help support his mom and sibblings by mowing yards, etc. Christmas for him consisted of no presents, but exchanging poems with family members. And so on. I think he was excellent in this movie, but the little girl stole the show. Ron |
