Well, this actually has something to do with magic, but since it's not fully magic-related, I posted it here.

I am really excited to have just been cast as the lead in a production of "Into the Woods" that will be produced here in Atlanta in February. I will play the Baker -- a role I've wanted to perform for years!

This is a musical that has a lot of potential for magic... levitations, flashes of fire, magical transformations, etc. I hope to contribute in a magical way to the production, but as I have been cast as an actor and not brought onto the production as a magic consultant I have to be sensitive in how I present my magic ideas to the director. He already has his own vision for the show, and we haven't had our first rehearsal yet so none of us knows his vision yet. But if the opportunity presents itself, I will definitely make them aware that I am available as a consultant in that area.

The rest of the connection to magic, in my opinion, is that any theatrical performing experience contributes to a magician's overall sense of theatricality and the ability to connect with the audience in different ways. I have never felt that any of my acting experiences did not have crossover value for my magic.

Anyway, I just thought some of the rest of you actors and musical theatre fans would be interested. If you're in Atlanta in February, some see the show!

Congrats Joe!

I recently saw the Broadway production with Vanessa Williams. It was a good performance but they did do a little too much overkill with the flash paper and other "fire" effects.

I agree with you that there is alot of room for more magical effects within the show.

I haven't seen that production, but I saw the original. Bernadette Peters had left the show and had been replaced... I think it was Nancy Dussault when I saw it. Anyway, I watched a videotape of the original production a few nights ago and they used a levitation as well as a nicely constructed magic staff for the witch.

I'm thinking a FISM flash for the witch would be a nice addition... there are lots of times when she should be able to create some flashes of light along the way.

I know we won't have trapdoors and hydraulics, so some of the transformations and costume changes will have to be blocked creatively by the director. We'll see if any magical techniques can augment what he has in mind.

Man, I forgot how much I missed doing a musical!

I told you all I had been cast in a show. If you're interested, some snapshots are now up at http://www.joemturner.com/acting

These are just casual snapshots by a friend who attended photo call tonight. A little blurry but you get the idea.

There are actually two "illusions" in the show... the witch undergoes a transformation (quick costume change) and then vanishes in the second act. Both are accomplished using moving panels and very pretty pyrotechnics.
