As dan said, Gary Kurtz had his routine on his A1 video called misty like a dream, I also have an old vhs tape calle Deceptions in Paradise by Curtis Kam, and its got a nice extended version in which the 3 coins go from hand to hand, then he puts the coins in his pocket and it reappears in the hands and is vanished one at a time... the first vanish is brilliant.

I first heard of 3 Fly by knowing that there is a coin across routine done in fingertips. It sounds cool and hence I bought it. It was the book from Daryl (there was no DVD at that time).
Though the description and the pictures are clear, I didn't learn a great deal from it. It is when I saw the Crowded Coins by Paul Wilson I knew about how this effect should look like. After that I re-read the booklet, and watched some more versions by different magicians. It now becomes one of my favorite routine. I personally don't suggest book coz it's a dynamic effect in which coins jump from the fingertips. It is when you see the effect yourself you know about the flow of it. Like the people suggested above, it's all about timing and books can't tell you this. I'm not sure about Daryl's DVD but from his book I can say it's a good work to start with, this one uses only normal coins so I consider it to be the basic one. If you want to go deeper for that, you can try Troy Hooser's and Reed McClintock. They offer some really nice use of gimmicks which make the effect more amazing~
It only takes a minute to learn how it is done, but takes a lifetime to learn how to do it.

Sleight of hand is best as you can use it anywhere any time, and I beg to differ, timing can be offered in a book, I learn so much out of a book. I have said that I could sell or lose all my tricks, videos or dvds, but I could never, NEVER part with my books. Also, where can I learn Jonathons original, anyone?

The package that daryl now offers comes with a booklet,a dvd and different coloured poker chips to help follow the moves.
this way you get the best of both worlds I highly recommend it. |

Yes.
Ok, I like Jon and really respect him and his work including VCA but I have got to say this(also small edit but I realize that this could be taken 2 ways, I am commenting on the "too modest to say so" part and not questioning that he began the plot of VCA/3fly): Quote:
Although he is too modest to say so, I have heard that the concept of the "Three-fly" effect was originated by our own ever-present Jonathan Townsend. LOL!!!!! ROFLMAOKSO~!~!!~!!! |

And, yes, I believe it has been mentioned a FEW (cough, cough) times (whether by Mr. Townsend or others) that he originated "3-fly" (VCA). However, I don't think that's a reflection on anybody's modesty. It is typically brought up in the context of a question like "who originated 3-fly?" or "what's the history behind it?" or something like that.

Funny comments there folks...
The few who have asked me directly about the trick have usually gotten my permission and support for their artistic efforts. The few who I originally showed the trick also got an explanation. Those seeking to inspect for vanity and ego issues are counseled to look in the mirror.

Maybe they don't dare look in the mirror Jon (or maybe they do, but don't see). That's why they project those issues on others. It is so much easier you see...

Jonathan WAS the inspiration for Three Fly. When Chris started working on the concept he brought the attention to the coins mid chest. but it should also be noted that Chris's ORIGINAL trick was not a STAND ALONE effect (ala Three Fly) It was apart of a BIGGER routine where the last coin completely disappeared.
Jonathan Townsend getts ALL THE CREDIT for ALL the differant variations to this effect. The coin world owes a great deal to Jonathan. Justin Miller |
