I use dream bag with music. The removing of items from the bag with the music looks great. I need to improve the beginning when presenting the empty bag. Does anyone have any suggestions or patter to start this routine other than, here is an empty bag?

A couple things I have done is one fold the bag flat and then open it up showing it empty. ANother thing I have done is bring things out of the bag like a deck of cards, rope, etc. then show the bag empty and then start producing the boxed flowers.

This is basically still my opener. I start by telling the kids that I brought my bag of tricks with me and then proceed to take things out..appearing cane etc until empty. I'll even have the 'Child of Honor' place her/his hand (CAREFULLY) up into the bag to prove its empty and then continue with the loads.

I do it without music. It is a comedy card routine for me.
I have a deck and I have somebody choose a card. The card is put back in the deck and shuffled. Now I claim that I will attempt the impossible! I am going to cut directly to the chosen card! I make a cut...but it is the wrong card...my mistake...lets try again, once again the wrong card...ooops...Once more...and it is still the wrong card...DOn't worry folks, there is 52 of them, we can do this all day... After a few more incorrect cuts I claim that I have sealed in an envelope inside of my table, the chose card...I reveal the evelope and tear it open...wrong card. Then I say I have the duplicate of your card only mine is much larger! (reach behind table and produce large card) This is your card? NO?????? It was the other big one...you see I had two shows today...(grab other big card)...hmmm, that is not it either. Time to reach for the old insurance policy, all cards on the policy are exposed and none are correct...I say "DO YOU SEE ANYTHING YOU LIKE????IF YOU DO THEN JUST SAY SO!!!" Nothing... So I say "Okay, this is the last resort...(I grab the dream bag.)"In this bag, I have your card...what was it?" (card is named by crowd and spectator). I look in the bag and shake it around (as if there is an entire deck in it [which is what the audience thinks so they giggle]) Then I show the bag to the crowd as I say "I know for a fact that I had you card in this bag before the show...do any of you guys see it in there?" (everyone yells NOOO) Reach inside and produce the boxes and silks one by one, each time showing the bag empty again and asking myself "where did all this junk come from??? Let me clean this stuff out and maybe the card will be umderneath..." After the last box, I reach in and grab a 36" silk with the forced card on it and (it is rolled up with cofetti) I ask once more "What was your card again?" They tell me, I fling the silk, it unrolls, confetti flies, the crowd gasps, the silk is spread, the card is seen, and the crowd applauds. Hope you like. ~Kyle~ p.s. Sometimes I like to throw in some comedy cards like 3 1/2 of clubs or a large 14 of diamonds...just for the cheap laughs. |

In my experience of performing for children I notice that when I 'accidently' mistake the cards they seem to (after the effect is over) not appreciate it as much because I got it wrong in the first place, has anyone else had this problem?

You might just present it incorrecly...I have never had the problem. If you make the last revealing really impressive, then maybe it will be appreciated. You see, my last revealence was a 36" silk and a bunch of cofetti. SO It was correct and looked pretty cool. THe kids love it...adults do to!

Kyle,
I think that is one heck of a routine! Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! I’m so sick of posts being deleted without any reason given, and by unknown people at that." - Steve Brooks Sep 7, 2001 8:38pm ©1999-2014 Daniel Denney all rights reserved. |

Dan,
Thank you very much! I like to incorporate as many tricks as I can into most of my routines. Like my coloring book routine for instance, as well as my square circle. |

Harry Allen has a DVD 'Comedy Bits & Magic Routines" Volume 2, which he does a Dream Bag routine with some funny patter (no music at all), it's actually pretty good. Also, Arthur Stead has a music CD just for the Dream Bag, if you are interested in having some really good music.

Harry Allen is who I bought my dream bag from...but I did not like his presentation too good. Especially when he had one of the boxes loaded backwards on accident and he got mad and blamed it on his helper. Some of his jokes are good, but the ones he delivered with the dream bag were pretty corny I thought. (which, corny is okay for kids, but for adults...it just doesn't seem to work that much!) It might for good ol "Product pushing Harry" though...as I like to call him. (You would know what I mean if you have ever seen him work at a dealers booth during a convention or even gone to his store...)

Harry Allen dream bag and dvd patter was all the same. he picked on the same woman the whole dvd. then when she moved to the back he still threw insults at her. come up with patter tp suit you and not harry allens style

I totally agree. Harry can come across as a bully sometimes, and not many audience members like that. When he saw that the lady did not like him picking on her by moving to the back (which is a more than obvious sign, he should have STOPPED picking on her!) Come up with something that fits YOUR performing persona and style. You will most likely go further doing that.
