He's my horse: a sixteen-year-old gray Kellogg Arabian gelding. (Technically, he's one of my three horses, but he's my favorite.)
Khaleel's angels - and mine as well - were working overtime last Saturday. (You're aware that horses' angels look like Pegasus, right?) A group of four of us were trotting along a local trail that we've ridden dozens of times. Everything was going fine, then Khaleel stumbled on his left foreleg. I tried to pull his head up, but he stumbled again and down he went: face-first into the dirt. As best I can make out he fell on his left side, then his body did a somersault, while his head stayed on the ground. He landed on his right side - and on my right leg, with my foot still in the stirrup - with his neck bent completely to the right and his head pinned underneath his right shoulder. I tried to pull my leg out from under him and he didn't move a muscle. Not a twitch. I honestly thought that he had broken his neck and that I had 900 pounds of dead horse lying on my leg. I finally pulled my leg free, ran around to his forelegs and tried to roll him over; he still wasn't moving a bit. My wife had run back to us, grabbed his hind legs, and both of us finally managed to roll Khaleel over onto his left side. In the meantime, one of the other ladies took off on her horse to get our trainer. Khaleel shook his head, scrambled to his feet, and ran off after the other horse. One moment he's dead, the next he's alive again. I still cannot believe it. The upshot is that he has a small cut over his left eye, some scrapes, quite a few sore muscles I'm sure, some swelling, and that appears to be it. We'll know in a couple more days if there's anything more serious, but the way he's moving it looks like no broken bones and no injured ligaments / tendons. What a blessing. I came out of it without a scratch. A 900-pound horse took me head-first into the dirt and landed on my leg and I don't have a scratch to show for it. Nothing. If you don't believe in miracles, come visit me in Yorba Linda, CA and I'll introduce you to Khaleel. |

That's an amazing story. I was holding my breath while reading your post wishing it ended well. So glad it did! Perhaps the wind was knocked out of Khaleel momentarily, which is the reason he didn't move?
So fortunate for you as well! You weren't hurt! We all know how Christopher Reeves was injured and you were extremely lucky. So yes! It was a miracle you were able to walk away without a scratch. I hope Khaleel continues to not have any problems..keep us posted how he's doing during the week. Chrystal |

Sounds more like a concussion... loss of consciousness for less than a minute probably from the head hitting the ground, but other than brain getting rattled no other problems.... would explain why no movement rather than wind knocked out.
That's amazingly lucky though, hope everything works out and there aren't any long term problems! |
