Brett...Johnny Meah is worth EVERY Penny...I'm sure you agree with that but it's understandable that if you have a small operation you can't (we can't) afford that...might I recommend this...with an example...if you know ANY decent artist, have them design your banner in computer or on paper etc. Take that to any competent Sign Painter and have them copy the art to banner material.

I did an art piece for Kondini who had it reproduced EXACTLY to his banner...they did a great job and they were regular sign folk not show painters.

Good show painters are hard to come by and untill you can afford the best (John Hiner & Johnny Meah in my estimation) you'll wind up with shoddy wannabees who's banners look like crap for the most part.

Just tell any decent artist what you want and you take it from there.

Haley Roberts in Royal Oak, MI does some pretty nice banner work. It's acceptable at the very least and pretty affordable. PM me and I will get you her info.

Keep in mind the INTENTION of the banner, what you intend it to accomplish. If it is to act like a movie poster or to convey a lot of information then that's one thing. BUT if the banner is to ATTRACT the eye and give a FAST impression of what the show or act is about then a complex dark 'painting' with lots of words and images is much too busy for the job. The great banners like those of Meah and Hiner and Frierson all have the simple traditional Orange framing with a simple dynamic Image and a FEW Large words. There is a sound reason for this. LOOK at the great banners and retain that style of Bright Simplicity so that a single glance by a potential customer will allow the information to sink in.

The same guy that painted Sideshow Bennie's banner is doing mine...his name is JD and is the front man for "Th' Legendary Shack*Shakers"
He paints exclusivly on projector screens, which is very handy indeed!

I used Lauren Muney of Snake Oil Productions. She did my banner in 2001 @ a reasonable price. I highly recomend her work.

Here is a link to her site http://www.snakeoilproductions.com/signs2.html
