What is it that you can do for them?
Sell them. What are the benefits to them? What will audiences see? Be creative, try explaining what you do in a story as if they were wittnessing it. Of course that's one part. Then theres's costs, length of time, whats involved, show overview, marketing statistics, your skills and back ground, and the suck. Look up business plans online. |

Straitjacket for a Renaissance Fair? It's post-period.

Yes Freak do the SJ in a Klingon outfit with sneakers. RenFair folk love that kind of stuff!

Actually, I didn't say that to be a horse's petoot. It would be more 'true' to the period, though, to maybe do some variation of chain or chain-and-strap torture harness escape as opposed to a straitjacket. It would not entail too much difficulty or expense to work up a good, full-view escape from a device with an 'inquisitional' look.
Thayer used to produce devices of that type, most invented by Trudel. Encyclopedia of Escapes (available from Cannon's Great Escapes) describes and explains a few of these. Steve

I've worked at the MD Renaissance Festival for about 16 years, 13 of it as a stage act. I also worked Ontario and Florida. My observation has been that, as far as stage acts go, no one really cares if it's period--the acts are performed in period(-like) clothing, but otherwise basically unchanged from their non-festival presentation.
For that matter, lav mics and amplification aren't period. Neither is Shakespeare or Robin Hood at a Tudor faire. At any faire, healthy teeth, good hygiene, snd living into your 50s aren't period. It's all about finding the proper balance and focusing on entertainment. I don't think many people will be put out by a straight jacket at a Ren Faire--it's pretty standard equipment. Sorry, forgot to answer the original question. (I haven't slept much in the past two days). If you have a promo video of your show, send that along with a letter of greeting that includes a brief description of the show, as well as some of your other performance experience. This letter is *not* the place to bring up money, BTW. If you don't have video, just send the other information. Letters of reference don't hurt, either. Good luck. Ren festivals can be a great place to work on an act and learn new skills.

Maybe not, but if I were doing a Ren Faire, I would go that extra mile to maintain the theme look. Steve

Technically, given the history of the acts, none of them would appear in Ren England either, which is where most, if not all of the Rens/Meds I have worked are.
Stephon is right, give it the look, the feel and language (and for god's sake, please don't wear Nike's like Stitch did at Ontario). This is what I was asked by ent directors for when I worked fairs. A video. Remember in your video to not only feature yourself but audience reaction shots. A resume and references, preferably of festival work and not all nightclubs. A photo collage. Stills of you in a period-esque costume, or a photo page of you doing the various acts. A short, to the point introduction letter, usually about 3 paragraphs is effective. First paragraph give a concise intro of yourself, and how you came to desire presenting at the event. 2nd paragraph should introduce your show. Length, audience interaction, how many times a day you are capable of performing it (I did 3 to 4 shows a day) and really what makes it different from all the other shows at the event currently. 3rd, how this would benefit their event? Mention no specific stage requirements/changes, successes with similar presentations at other fastivals anything that will make it seem effortless and prosperous for them. Thank them for reviewing the enclosed material and away you go. I was told once by Tom Plott (who works Ontario and I believe Maryland that anything over a page and a half he doesn't fully read). But that is all in my experience. Each ent. director is different in what they are looking for and what they feel will best suit their event. Hope this helps. Pele

Just an update--sadly, the Ontario Board of Directors decided their festival was not a money making venture, and shut it down. Tom is now back at Maryland full season.

No doubt.
My only point is that many people who go to Ren Faires expect at least some attempt at creating the feel of being in the High Renaissance. If the 'knights' are jousting on Harleys, it takes away from that. If I do a Ren Faire or 'period' atmosphere show, I at least try to give the audience what they are paying for. My effects may not be true to the period, but I try to make them LOOK like they could have been. Steve

Stephon, I got an email last week that the Ontario Faire is actually on. It is being held at a new location, and I believe it is being scaled down. Perhaps it is not being produced by the same company (shire name is different) but they are still labelling it as the same faire. If I can find the website again, I will PM it to you.

Thanks, Pele. I'm really surprised to hear that; either it's a new development, or I've fallen off the grapevine.

Actually, straitjackets aren't that far out of time. They originated in the south of France, in the early 1600s.

Is there a doccumented history on the SJ somewhere where we could find it? I just love arguing with the period fanatics.
Also is there a good chain escape to use that would look period. I might be doing a ren faire next weekend, and well I'm not sure that the SJ in a kilt would be a good idea. (let alone on stilts) (then again I don't get many complaints when I'm doing the kilt and stilts thing.) |
