I was thinking, How about an emergency backup kit filled with visual, compact magic. I know we are talking about tools, but in a way this is a tool that is needed for emergency purposes.
Anything can go wrong in a show and it is a great idea to pack a small case with rope, scissors, TT, silk, cards, and anything else you would like to put in the case. You might find yourself needing to fill in extra time, perhaps the sound goes out, an act doesn't show etc. This idea comes from Jeff McBride on his Stage Magic videos. |

A good sense of humor is also very critical I think.

Duct tape. Knife, pen & paper (for one of those ideas!), Leatherman multi tool, great item has loads of tools on it, a sure investment for any magician.
On the subject of having extra stufff with you; I was in a show last year, and the sound man was half an hour away after getting stuck in a traffic jam. All eyes turned on me. All I had was a deck of cards, but I managed it, this night made me a 10 times better magician than I was before Tom |
