Hi All.
I'm just working on a new illusion design for a sawing. The blades are inserted vertically as the performer stands inside an upright box. He/she is cut right down the middle (right between the eyes), and the box is seperated into two halves. The performer then speaks to the audience and the eyes and half mouth are able to move on both halves of the face. I am sure that someone must have done this before. I want to check this out before I go ahead and make it available. Any info? Thanks. Chris Stolz Stolz Illusions

Copperfield had a vertical sawing of a girl a few years back. I want to say it was on the Orient Express special, but I could be wrong (really wrong). It was highly visible, but I don't seem to remeber any talking by the girl. I hope this helps.

That was a killer illusion eh Nick! I remember he did it to a seal song (killer). It looked unbeleivable. All I know is that it took me awhile before I noticed the boots! One of my all time favourite illusions.

Yes this has been done before .. infact my version was first performed in 1988 and we called it "Any way you slice it." Not long afterward ... David Copperfield had his version of Vertical Sawing called the "Blade" and Brett Daniels featured an illusion very similar to mine .. yet a bit more complicated. We're all friends .. but you can see some of the same elements in the other illusions. The ealiest version of a vertical sawing was an illusion by Robert Harbin. I forget exactly what it's called .. but the box is divided vertically then in half again. Now that I think of it .. Magic Makers in Canada .. has a version they sell. It's hard to say who's it is .. but we did come up with a cool version. It's actually on an Abbott's Get Together tape from 1992 .. not that you should copy it .. because I will find you, but rather watch how cool I was back then.

Chris,
Its always best to research into a 'new' idea as much as possible before claiming as your own. The fraternity are usually very forthcoming with information on the origin of effects. Harbin had a nice illusion called the aztec girl that vertically/horizontally sliced then folded into quarters...and was then presented as a vanish using an assisting spectator to prove the sections empty by rattling swords around inside. There is an old published illusion called "Miss Boots". I would have to go looking for the details, but it is a vertical sawing in an upright cabinet. A woman wearing boots steps inside and places her hands out two holes in the top. When the door is closed the audience can see her hands and her boots. A saw blade is inserted into the top of the box between the womans hands and sawed downward until the blade is between her boots. The cabinet is opened and the woman is unharmed.
David Coperfield used a version of this in the ABC special when Donny Osmond chainsawed him in half. It was built by Wellington Enterprises. The only major change was that the box was horizonal. Everything old is new again. John Bundy |

David also did the cutting with a Laser beam in an earlier special.

The pendragons do a regular sawing in half with a clear box, but Im not sure about anyone doing a vertical sawing with a clear box. I know with David's the front panels would come away as she was cut in half and you could see her whole body severed in half standing upright in each part of the contraption, with a huge blade running down each part of the cut side of the body halves, it was very cool looking.

That sounds pretty cool. I'll have to see if I can find some images or video. I want to be 100% sure that I'm going for a new look. I don't want to step on any toes. I already have the rights for one effect Copperfield did on one of his specials....I don't want to mess that up.
In my version, the performer stands against a thin vertical table and a clear plexi box is put over them. The blades are inserted and the box, which is hinged at the bottom, is split to form a "V" shape. People can walk between the two boxes to show that there's no black art. The music dies for them to speak, or the performer can lip sync to the music, to show that the half mouths on either side are fully functional. In fact, both halves have fully moving body parts. When the boxes are pushed together and the blades are removed, the perfomer simply walks forward in one piece again. In Copperfields version, did any of the parts move? -Chris.

Okay, DC performed his vertical sawing on his Barclay House Special. I have a few pictures of it (if you are interested, Chris). The quality isn't that great and they aren't that big, but it could give you an idea of what DC's version looked like. PM me if you are interested, Chris.

Hey, Nick, I know what you mean, all of his specials are kinda blured together now for me too. Too many great illusions. Speaking of his specials, he used to do one every year (for the first 15 years under contract with the network) but now what happened. It seems every 5 years or something he might do a special. I certainly miss those annual specials.

The Seal song rocked. It was a sweet illusion. The parts that moved was the arms. They moved up and down. It is well worth to check out.
I didn't relize others did a version of this. That is neat to know. Michael

I remember seeing Copperfield doing this live a few times. The first few times both side were opend at the same time and you could see the girl smiling and changing her expression(I had pretty good seats). In later versions the girl didn't move her face, only her arms. plus the boxes where never shown open together. He would open one side, then pull the boxes together, then pull them apart again and show the other side open. that's the performance he used on TV.
Peter... I noticed the boots too... and I think.. the gloves |

Just as Irish-matt said, at first he used to have both halves opened at the same time. The for some reason, only one half at a time. On TV he did this last one. One wonders...
I don´t know if it has been done with a clear box. Hey Chris, your version sounds pretty cool. I hope you go ahead and do it. |
Chris Stolz Inner circle Mississauga, Ontario 1958 Posts |
Thanks Jazz, I intend to. I think my version has a lot of offer, especially the fact that the music can be lowered and the girl can speak showing the mouths talking on both halves. I'm currently working on another sawing that I'd love to get finished before the vertical sawing. It's a triple sawing that's going to be pretty cool.

I know this has nothing to do with vertical cutting. But here is also a neat twist from Franz
