I am looking for some idea for an illusion that features an element of danger to the magician followed by a vanish and offstage re-appearance. Doesn't have to be published plans, just brainstorming. Any ideas?

Personally I have always enjoyed the hangman. I find it is very strong , easily done with movement right up to where "you" appear in the house. While performing this I have actually put tears in family members eyes.

Quite a pretty penny, but Doug Malloy has a nice spike escape.

That's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for (without the sub trunk lead-in). But I calculate I'd have to to about 300 birthday parties to afford it I'll have to keep thinking for now...

http://magicmakersillusions.com/ has a nice spike escape. Daniel Summers also has a spike escape http://danielsummers.com/deathdrop.html . Both are probably a "little" above what you want to pay, but I remember seeing one of the Magic Makers' spike escapes on the Magic Auction a bit ago. So I guess just keep an eye out for any deals you can find. I hope this helps.

The Daniel Summers illusion look pretty good. I especially like the hesitation between the initial drop and the final drop through the table. Gives the thing an extra punch. The only problem here, is the reappearance happens in the box. I want to be able to appear in another location.

Richard,
I currently have a design for an original illusion that just may fit what you're looking for. It's called the Drop Box. Effect: The performer is forced into a raised cage containing a small box. He is locked in the box which is then pushed over to a trap door in the bottom of the cage. The cage is then locked for a double escape! When the time runs out, the trap opens sending to box straight down and onto the spikes below the raised cage. The front and rear doors of the box are opened to show an empty box! The performer can than appear at the rear of the theatre. If you'd like to see a short animated video clip, pop me an email! Chris

Andrew Mayne has an illusion in his book IllusionBook that is exactly what you are looking for.
It is called the Death Box and the magician is put into a box on top of a platform (no base). The box is hoisted into the air and after a dramatic moment is dropped onto a group of spikes that break through both the bottom and top of the box completely penetrating it. The magician can then be reapperaed anywhere including the back of the auditorium. I believe fellow forum member, Farrel performed this illusion at the local stage magic competition a few years ago with some presentational adjustments. It seems like it fits the bill to a tee and you can build it or hire someone to I suppose and it may end up costing you a lot less. Hope this helps. |

I saw Greg Frewin do a really good spike escape recently. It played out very well and really created that "danger" feeling. His lighting and music played a big part of creating that mood. You can see a couple of photos of that illusion here http://www.gregfrewintheatre.com/Gallery.aspx

Hmmmmm... brainstorming, you say...
Okay, say our hero lies on a table and is covered w/ a cloth. Then a framework holding a vertical sliding device studded w/ spikes is rolled over the table. The spikes begin to lower over the covered form, hesitate a second, and drop. Then our hero reappears from the house. A similar idea could be done a la Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum," where the magician lies on the table, is covered, and the pendulum device is rolled over the table. Here we would watch as the blade slowly lowers while it swings. Either one of these could be done as either a small, self-contained illusion or a full-stage epic depending on the venue.
That's our departed buddy Burt, aka The Great Burtini, doing his famous Cups and Mice routine
