I was in my local Sams club and saw a toolbox that was a metal frame covered in black canvas fabric. Large compartments with lots of pockets along the inside and outside. It looked interesting but my wife gave me one of those looks and I kept on walking.
I wish I had more info or the ability to put up a picture but it looked really functional and the black canvas made it very unobtrusive. Frank Tougas

Nice but different. This looks more like a doctors black bag except it is longer, the handle extends across the entire width, and it is open. Think of one of those more expensive tool boxes where when you open it there is a top part with a long handle that pulls out and exposes the rest of the box. This looks more like the part you pull out except it isn't just a tray but deeper like the entire toolbox and is made mostly from black canvas (i.e.) soft sides.
I could not find a picture on the Sam's Clube website. Chances are it is a closeout item of some kind. I hope to go back and get one in the next few days assuming they still have it. Frank Tougas

Nightmare Weaver, thanks for the info!
I stopped and picked up the pencil case as well. I am more than pleased with the product. I am making a few modifications and will post some pics when it is complete.

Today I found a really nice case. I was going to get a camera aluminum hard case but didn't see anything small. Then I got lucky as I walked into Office Depot. It's a VAULTZ locking personal File Tote that has reinforced steel corners and aluminum rails with combination lock. The interior is soft black felt, rubber feet on bottom and it measures 10.5"H x 12.5"W x 6"D. I believe this item is brand new so you guys/gays go check it out. It's about 30 bucks and it's money well spend to carry and protect my props / gimmicked decks.

I would not carry something that huge for close up magic.
It seems way overkill. You can pack many hours of performance into one little leather waist pouch and normal pockets.

My entire close-up act for restaurant work is carried in about 10"x7"x4" magic lunch box marketed by Archie McPhee. I placed foam in it and cut out slots.
It carries the following for restaurant work. Ring and Rope and/or Finger Ring and String, Eason's Easy Opener, Regular deck with Red Hot Mama cards, Vienna Magic clear Finger Chopper, Himber Notepad, Thumb tip and silk with mini paper bag, Mini Cups and Balls or Coin Funnel with battery, Hot Rod or Money Paddle (sometimes other paddle tricks), two packet tricks (often Bicycle built for Five and Trost 8-card Brainwave but which I vary), Color Changing Knives, 8" wand and wand purse, Ammar's Coins through Silk, Hopping Coins or Copper Silver Brass in Coin purse, several 260 balloons for coin in balloon. This stays packed all the time and off loading some items to my pockets on arrival allows me to be prepared very quickly. My box was a magic lunch box McPhee released a few years ago and looks very nice when approaching a table. Here's other styles. http://www.mcphee.com/lifestyle/current/10756.html http://www.mcphee.com/lifestyle/current/10930.html http://www.mcphee.com/lifestyle/current/10407.html

I forgot my minibriefcase with sponge ball and ball bearing, plus Chain for Fast and Loose. Sometimes I pack a Piatt envelope if the carrying Ring and Rope because the Himber Notepad then cannot fit.
It truly is amazing what you can fit in a small space. I, orignally, did it as a challenge exercise, but found it helpful and kept the box together.

I agree, Jaz. That's why I showed the list of magic in that small size lunchbox which is smaller than I estimated. It you go through the list of what's there you have well over two hours of entertainment, plus everything packs back in after the show.
My normal routine is to arrive at the restaurant on load the props I need from the box into my various pockets as I use them. If I see some regulars for whom I may need to vary the entertainment I have with me enough back up material. Beyond that there is no need to haul a big box for table hopping. I even have a belt hook by which I can carry the box with me if I must. A lunchbox or belt pack should be plenty.

I have a box that looks like a book w/ the title "The Underground Empire".
While my intention was to use this for bizarre and mentalism I never really used it. It does hold rune stones, ESP cards, NWs, flash paper, pads and most of what I would need for such a closeup show. For kids I have a small leather suitcase full of stuff I never use. For strolling and table hopping I don't like the idea of leaving stuff unsecured, therefore the pouch. To each their own. |

Why not modify an old cigarette girl case with a folding top that can be used as a closeup pad?

I bought a professional tackle box from a local sports chain store, made by Plano.
http://www.planomolding.com/759.htm It maintains everything in the same orientation without the need to rely on foam inserts, like the "briefcase" style cases. It is practical, holds tons of stuff, and was very inexpensive (on sale for about $30). Holds way more than you will need for a single show, but if you want to be prepared for anything.... this is it! |
