Which ones of you out there are loving this field of mental manipulations as I do?
I find NLP to be fascinating. The effects you can get from using it are bind-boggling. Any comments, my friends? Have fun! Roi. |

I've seen some performers use some principles of NLP to good effect. I've seen others hit keywords so heavily it's the auditory equivalent of a large red flag. They then sit back with a smug look as the audience looks at each other in perplexity.
I know NLP is flavour of the month, but it is only one weapon in the arsenal. It is not a panacea and cannot replace practice and hard work. My 2 cents.

Yeah, it's highly over-rated.
1000's claim its powers, but very few are able to show them.

Well once more I'd like to stress out one important thing. As mentioned above by Rick or enigmax f.i., SOME NLP techniques can be a valuable tool in mentalism. I agree with ROi that it can be fascinated to get some techniques incorporated in mentalism.
Some times ago I mastered the NLP-Master-Practitioner and thus I know what all this is about. ALl the basics like rapport, pacng, leading, key words, meta programes ,modelling etc. can be a helpful tool in mentalism. Because NLP is very common at the moment many mix all mental performances or suggestion techniques with NLP. LIke bobser mentioned NLP is a bit over-rated in mentalism. With over-rated I mean that some, mostly newcomers to mentalism, believe that almost every routine they see is NLP. I like to say that if you have to do a 2hour mental stage show, liek I did recently, and only want to use NLP. Forget it! It should be a show and no seminar. On the other hand if I show some of my NLP-based routines of my show in my seminars I regularly give it gets huge reactions. So I just wanted to show some little differences before glorifying NLP as THE main tool in mentalism. You can be a master of mentalism (like many pro's are) withouht knowledge in NLP. But you can't be a master mentalist with only knowledge in NLP and not be able to apply the basic techniques like CT, NW, etc. and the hard work enigmax mentioned to work out a routine and presentation. Again, as a fan of NLP becaues it is a big part of my income I would recommend get into this field because it CAN help you a lot. But before one gets deeper into this you should get an experienced mentalist with knowledge of all the techniques and work behind it. Just my thoughts Regards Thomas |

Neuro Linguistic Programming. From what I know, this is based on the studies of Milton Erickson and Virigina Satir. This was founded by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. Their teachings on Hypnosis and Rapport are 100% solid gold IMHO. Kenton uses this in the field of mentalism. NLP is all about how mind works.

Thank you all for your input.
My personal favorite magic routines are with cards, and I know all about practicing 'till your hands won't move anymore. I would also like to add that without the right social skills and showmanship - nothing you do will get you payed. Besides, basing an entire show on ANY one "thing" is no good. Have fun! Roi. |

Hi Guys
My name is Marc Hogan, and I teach Persuasion Skills based on NLP, hypnotism, suggestion and social psychological techniques. I have a background in Stage Hypnotism, Cold reading and Mentalism. NLP is a collection of techniques that are based on various psycho analytic models that have broadly developed from Stoicism philosophy. http://www.bacp.co.uk/cpj/current/cover_feature3.htm I've worked in Sales for over 10 years and use these techniques to great effect. As well as training business Persuasion Skills, I have also used these Techniques in 3 ways in my mentalism: 1) Using NLP models to discuss how the brain process information, therefore to create audience interest 2) As explanations of mental affects, which rely on sleight of hand - rather than suggestion, however this allows me to create compliance for routines that are completely based on NLP and Suggestion 3) With cold reading to create the appearance of psychic ability and then creating waking trance phenomena with participants. I've lots of articles on my site, feel free to peruse! Marc |

The thing with NLP is that its a vast science and most of the people doesn't take the time to learn whats in it. They just look through and studies a few points from here and there. NLP is not about how Derren Brown does his tricks. Its about learning how a mind works and recognising the various general patterns that human beings have and dealing accordingly. NLP can be applied in therapy, belief changes, creating rapport, enhancing the perceievability (say the magical experience of the spectator) etc. Its a set of tools and believe me, there are so many tools in the box. It does require practice. I don't claim to be an expert. I am still a learner. From what I have seen, it does work. Although there are many trainers out there who claim many supernatural things. You have to do it one baby step at a time. (thanks Bill Murray).

This will probably not make me any friends here:
>>Neurolinguistic Programming Neurolinguistic programming (NLP) is a variable system of procedures purported to enable people to communicate more effectively and influence others. It is said to involve modifying the patterns or "programming" created by interactions among the brain (neuro), language (linguistic), and the body that produce both effective and ineffective behavior. Proponents claim that NLP has cured phobias, allergies, and other problems in one or a few brief sessions. Its core postulates are: (a) people are most influenced by messages that reflect how they internally represent whatever they are doing; and (b) this representation is reflected by eye-gaze patterns, posture, tone of voice, and language patterns. The internal representation can be visual (picturing what they are involved with), auditory (hearing it sounded out), or can involve other senses. Proponents claim, for example, that a someone experiencing a mental image might use the words "I see," whereas someone in an auditory mode might say "that sounds right to me. Scientific studies have demonstrated no correlation between eye movements and visual imagery, reported thoughts, or language choices. A National Research Council committee has found no significant evidence that NLP's theories are sound or that its practices are effective.<< This is from the QuackWatch website. While the name of the site shows its agenda, the information posted should not be lightly dismissed. Can NLP techniques be used to some success in sales, counselling, mentalism? Yes. Are they a panacea that will convince people to buy, recover, believe? No. Studies have shown that NLP is no better at relieving symptoms of depression than simply talking. Of course, proponents will say that is because it was used wrong or by people who do not really understand NLP. I have seen entertainers use it and they only come across as bullies. The audience knows what is going on. I have seen counsellors make claims for the efficacy of NLP in treating diseases like asthma, AHDH and PDD. The parents had hopes raised and dashed again and again. By all means investigate, explore, play with it. But please do not accept the claims of the apologists holus bolus. Do not swallow the debunkers without examination either. You may find facets worth following up on.

Dave: Some of the telemarketers will have been trained by people who use some of the tenets of NLP to promote "communication" skills. Have you seen Glengarry Glen Ross? Highly recommended BTW.
