I use Bob Kohler's Aces In their Faces." Nice effect. I have been told that Kohler has a video detailing an advanced handling of the effect, with more phases. Is anyone familiar with this video? If so, could you please post an opinion of it.
Thanks. Richard |

Bob Kohler indicated that he will release this dvd later this year. So I don't think anyone has it yet, except Bob Kohler himeself At any rate, here is the thread that this effect was discussed before.

Hi Richard, your right! Bob Kohler releases this dvd early. If you click on the link above, you'll see that at the end of the thread Bob himself on July 7 stated that this video he hopes to have it out by Christmas. I'm so glad that Bob has it out so quickly as I've been wanting to get this new revised edition for sometime.
For magicians out there, if you have this please write a review. I'm very interested also. Thanks.

MacDonald's Aces is better than the Kohler Trick. Save your money.

Asper,
I'm sorry to say you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. With Kohler's routine for Aces in their Faces, you have four (4) seperate phases and each one is a killer. This complete routine, when done properly, comes as close to real magic as we can get. Highly recommend "Aces in their Faces"...get Kohler's full routine with it. |

If you want a multi-phase assembly, Bro. John Hamman's Final Aces is better. If you want a stand alone assembly, MacDonald's Aces (with better visibility and potential for better changes/vanishes) is better.
I know exactly what I'm talking about. Don't believe the HYPE. |

I love Aces in Their Faces - just wondering if the extended handling on the video makes the routine even stronger than the original version.

Asper, to which specific handlings of MacDonald's Aces and Aces in Their Faces are you referring?

As for specific routines, I've seen the Kohler video and read the booklet that came with the trick. As for MacDonald's Aces, I use my own varient, but the beauty of the trick is the cleanliness and variety of the vanishes -- due to the nature of the gimmick that's used in AITF, the degree of freedom that you have with the aces before the vanishes is limited. Basically, you get better vanishes with any MacDonald's Aces routine.
As for picking a specific routine, look at the Garcia routine that was published by Tannen's. I don't like the switch he uses, but that can be changed. However, the vanishes have a magical feeling which the AITF routine lacks. Another version of the MacDonald's Aces that's better than AITF is the Vernon routine. Even the Oulett routine, which is too discrepant for my tastes, is better. |

Asper,
Based on your responses, it is clear that you don't understand the full potential of the Aces In Their Faces gaffs. And that's okay...I just wouldn't bash an effect that you don't utilize or fully understand. The vanish sequences possible with AITF are more convincing than McDonald's Aces and the types of vanishes can be just as varied. And this is no hype...I have no reason to hype AITF. I use it all the time and it has served me extremely well. |

That's a weak argument. Without any facts or counter argument to what I wrote, you simply dismiss it as "it is clear that you don't understand the full potential of the Aces In Their Faces gaffs".
Give us some examples. For example, a beautiful vanish that you can do with a DF that you can't do with the SC gimmick is the vanish using an Elmsley count and 2 FU cards. That vanish is gorgeous. I've studied the literature, most notably the Marlo work, on the SC gimmick with respect to Ace vanishes and assemblies. It's something nice to toy with, but the lack of freedom in displaying the cards limits what you can do and ends up in a tighter and handling with more tension. I'm not bashing the effect (the assembly). I just don't love a particular method. You do get a production with the AITF gimmick, but it's not subtle enough for me, and a segment of the population will deduce the MO when it's used. |

I've performed the trick over 100 times in less than one week's performances. As stated, I've performed it for over 5 years. There have been a handful of people who said something about the gimmick. However, I scrapped this version for other reasons. The production from the spread IS deductable.

Hi MagicChris,
Does the AITF video offer alternate handlings or expand the routine in some significant ways? Thanks. Richard |
