When I was young I had a book of magic (mid W's). It had a silver metallic cover, was a in "large format", talked about the history of magic and gave some instructions on building props. It referred to the building material as a type of board (similar to cardboard)you could buy in art shops. I know this is vague, any ideas. Thanks.

I will try my best to describe it,The book as you stated is a silver color and it is a little over an inch thick. The picture on the cover is a very good likeness of Howard Thurston levititating someone. The cover states; The Great Book of Magic including 150 mystifying tricks you can perform, by Wendy Rydell with George Gilbert.
It is 271 pages with over 700 illustrations. If this helps it was published by Harry N. Abrams in New york..Good luck Rennie

I was just doing a little research on some of my really old books and this was the only thread on the Café that talks about this book. This was the first magic book I ever got, which was back in the late 70's. Mine is a hardcover and it really is a very good book. It covers some of the effects you see in more popular books like Wilson's Course, but it also has some unique things and a lot of well written magic history. This book is probably what originally got me really into magic as a kid. I still have a couple of the large box illusions stored away somewhere that my dad made for me from this book.
