Apparently, Guy Pierce (momento, L.A.Confidential) has been cast to play Houdini in a new film about him.
It looks like it is about an affair that Houdini had while touring Europe. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117926......&p=0 |

Houdini cheated on Bess? Why? She was so attractive! LOL!

Houdini loved Bess, I think that is clear from all the biographies and writings of personal friends.
I have never read such a thing, if someone has read this in a reliable source, I'd like to know the source please. Frankly I would be shocked if that was true. Houdini was shrewd, and never hesitated to embarras or shoot down a rival, but he was also a gentleman.

The affair is mentioned in Kenneth Silverman's Biography of Houdini.
It occurred in 1918 and was with Jack London's widow Charmain. Details are sketchy but there is evidence from her writings that they did have a short fling of some sort. Bess admits to finding a stash of love letters from various women in Houdini's belongings after his death. I do not believe any of these survive. Houdini was indeed shrewd, and never hesitated to embarrass or shoot down a rival. He was perhaps a gentleman but he was also a man and thus susceptible to the weakness of the flesh.

Why would anyone want to make a movie about Houdini and cast him as an adulturer? Sheesh...Hollywood sucks sometimes!
Of course the Tony Curtis film where he starred as Houdini sucked as well! I noticed Dunninger was a consultant for the film...why then did ALL of the magic sequences suck so friggen' bad??? You must forgive me please, you see, after doing magic for over twenty years, the other night was the first time I watched the old Houdini movie. I was a little let down. johnny

I disagree that the Houdini movie with Tony Curtis was not a good movie. It was very well written. Many of the lines are classic. It was to a great degree not accurate, but why should that surprise anyone. That is Hollywood. It is not a documentary. This movie has probably inspired more youngsters to become magicians that any other move ever made.
It also, though not factual, gives one a feeling of the greatness of the man, and Tony Curtis, who was very, very handsome at the time does a great job. This movie helped to establish him as a star. In this film his name appears below the title, where in future films his name would appear above the title, whis is very important in terms of his place as a Hollywood star. From the Magic Times web site:
"Catherine Zeta-Jones is in negotiations to star opposite Guy Pearce in 'Death Defying Acts', a biopic of the magician Harry Houdini. …Zeta-Jones would play a psychic whom Houdini has an affair with." So, was Charmain London a psychic, did Houdini have more than one affair, or is this another example of Hollywood creating its own version of the truth for dramatic effect?

Houdini said he would try to come back from the "other side". Perhaps this new movie will **** him off enough to do just that. Now, that would make a great film.

Charmian London doesn't appear to have professed psychic powers, she was just what we might call a "free spirit" with some relatively uninhibited ideas. Silverman's "Notes to HOUDINI!!!" offers that the Charmian London passages all came directly from her hand-written diaries. It also offers a suggestion that some notes from Houdini to someone still exist that don't read like the otehr cutie-pie notes he left Bess throughout their married life.
The fact of the matter is, Houdini never met Sherlock Holmes, Batman or Dracula; he didn't die in the USD or have a phobia about Oct. 31. Yet all of these events have come to pass whether in books, movies or television shows. Houdini has become a mythical character. While we in magic may love to see the plain, unvarnished biography, others just want a colorful persona for a good story. Using Houdini is a shortcut in character development- there's almost no need for a backstory

And if this is the Eddie Garland associated with the Ghost Hours site... great job! Anybody interested in making an entertaining, engaging Web site could learn a thing or three from this one!
A question, Eddie... I haven't had a lot of time on the site- how much of the vent bio is real and how much is good story?

Hi guys, just to let you know I was hoping to be able to announce that I was the Magic Consultant for this movie. Unfortunately, despite being in contact with the producers since last year and arranging meetings over the last two months, another local magician has managed to procure the role for himself. We still have three other projects in the pipe-line so hopefully those can be kept top secret until they're 100% confirmed.

Margarette, if you have a thing for men who are old enough to be your grandfather, then have I got a deal for you!

It was mentioned that the affair happened in Europe. I believe that Houdini met and knew Mrs. London while in the USA (but I am not 100% certain). If the affair is being played in the movie as if it were a psychic, perhaps they are fictionalizing Houdini's relationship with Margery.
Guess we'll find out for sure what's up when the movie is released.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

More likely Margery was honking Carrington's spirit horn. That would work in the movie.

Melbourne based magician Ross Skiffington was approached last month and has been coaching Guy Pearce ever since. Ross had also had previously acted with Guy in the movie “Flynn” based on Errol Flynn’s life.

I completed an extensive research project on Houdini's life, with emphasis on how his love for his mother and wife (Bess) lead him into the world of Spiritualism and how his conflicting desire to discover legitimate aparations while combatting against the charlatans of the age were passed on to Bess as she tried to communicate with Houdini after he passed on.
In the 3 months of research, I vaguely recall a very short affair, but I could be mistaken. It sounds sort of a spinoff from The Prestige and The Illusionist, both have magicians in various affairs... Derek Merdinyan |
