What would you recommend as the easiest card trick for a beginner to learn?
Just one trick only, please? |

I agree with the 21 card trick. It is the easiest to learn. I'm not so sure about Dr. Daley's last trick though.

Location of a spectator's card using a Key Card. I taught this to my 5 year old nephew and he does a fine job with it.

See Ortiz in Scams and Fantasies for an out of this world, knock their socks off 21 card trick (you probably won't recognize it as such - I didn't).

Here's a funny question. What the heck is the 21 card trick? I've never heard of the dman thing yet nearly all of you seem know it, and magicians pass it off as something I should have learned before I was toilet-trained.
What's the effect all about? |

Aris...ask someone who knows to perform it for you, then learn it. You'll appreciate all that's been said, afterwards.

The 21 card trick is one of the three card tricks that a layman will want to show you when he finds out that you do card magic. Of the three it is the worst, most boring and painful to watch.
Making it even worse, magicians have a penchant for creating variations so that they can then b!+(# slap the person who shows them the original by doing something that looks like the 21 card trick but isn't. |

21 card trick, it uses a regular deck of cards, no sleight of hand, no preparing the deck, no memorizing the deck.

I know a great trick that is a wonderful impossible location.
I don't know the name. I learned it in 1978 in Del Mar, California. It fools everybody. I've never seen anyone else do it. Wish I could be more help. I taught it to a 10 year old last week and he was fooling all the grown-ups with it.... over and over and over. I added a sucker ending to the trick and the kid was winning $1 bills left and right from the rest of the group. I won $100 off the trick back in 1981 from my college roomate. Unfortunately I was nice and bet him $100 the next day (a Sunday) that the Rams would beat the 49Niners in football that day. Given it was 1981, that was the Niner's first year they went to the superbowl. So I broke even on the deal. But it's still a great trick

If one can force a card ( not necessarily classic force, but ANYTHING) then Play It Straight Triumph is great, and it is a fabulous trick, not just an easy one.

"Do As I Do" is very easy and makes a big impression. There is a version of it in "The Royal Road To Card Magic" in the "Key Card" chapter.

Also, there's a key card effect in Garcia's "Magic With Crads" where you spread the deck face up and hold the spectator's wrist as they point at various cards in the spread and you'll know their card by "the quickening of their pulse"! That was the very first trick I learned and by far the easiest one I have ever learned. |

I agree with "Do as I Do". I think it's called "Upside-down deck" in Scarne's _Scarne on Card Tricks_. I haven't done this trick for over a year, but I'm sure it will probably still get good reactions.

Try the Piano trick...........even more basic than the ol'21 card trick.......
BTW, Do as I Do isn't the same as the upside down deck from Scarnes book, though for some unknown reason thanks to Penguin magic many now confuse the two diffrent effects........ Dave |

The spectators freely selects a card, freely cuts the deck into three piles and freely chooses which pile to set her selection on top. Piles are then added together, cut again by other spectators and the magician finally gets down to business. He says he'll find the card and begins turning cards face up onto the table. At one moment spectators will look at each other because the selected card was passed over. Oblivious to this performer declares that the next card he turns over will be the original selection. Some sort of fake "bet" is made and then at the last moment the magician turns over the already face up card. One could use almost any sort of method, but the simple one described in Scarne's book is (I think) highly effective. I wonder if anyone has picked up a girl's phone number using this.

"Gemini Twins" - what could be simpler? or go and buy "Stolen Cards" (no skill) or, even better, "Quintuplicate Coincidence" (no skill, but some thinking - but well worth the effort!) But they are all effectively the same simple effect.
