Hey everyone,
I want to start ventriloquism but I don't know where I can buy a cheap doll. I checked ebay but there really isn't much there for me. I don't want to spend to much incase it isn't really my thing. I want a dummy that you can but your hand into, not one with a thring coming out of its neck, anyone know where I could but one, I live in ottawa. does anyone have a doll the would like to sell cheap?
thanks everyone! the coffee here is great

Why don't you just practice with a hand puppet then?
Check your local toy stores for hand puppets. Sometimes they have nice ones. I ran into a large dog that you put your hand into his head and work his mouth. I got it on sale. His body is really stable and he stands very well withough much support.

I also have an Axtell Rabbit puppet...but that is not what you are looking for...too expensive

I have not seen any "Cheap" vent puppets.

What I mean by cheap is just a used one that someone is ready to part with, I know that vent puppets are very expensive,
ps thanks, that is a good idea, but is there anyone out there selling a vent puppet?

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm looking for a hard figure, but can't find any that I can afford. It appears to me that the price of them does not go down with age, but up in most cases. Anyway, it's something to save up for.

In the mean time, Kyle's suggestion is really the best. Get a hand puppet and work with him. I've got a soft muppet type figure, and he cost about $40.00 from a local costume shop.

Good luck!

There are quite a few sites that offer hand puppets of all varieties. I picked up a muppet style little boy puppet a while back for 14 quid maybe not as impressive as the dummy heads but certainly still full of character and fine for a professional gig. Plus they're not quite as freaky for the wee 'uns.

BTW Why on earth would you change from a sensible name like Greg and call yourself George?

All the best,

Some thoughts:

1 the BEST Ventriloquist you will ever see in your lifetime is probably RONN LUCAS, currently performing long term at the RIO in Vegas. He is the only variety artist I have ever seen, magician or vent that gets a standing ovation EVERY TIME. Ronn is the show, not his puppets.

This guy doesn't use a single standard figure (and neither do most top vents I've seen). I believe vent was dying as a top draw for a while because everyone had an act that looked the same, same old slotjaw figures. Not so today. Ron works with a foam cartoonish cowboy, a dragon, and kills making the microphone talk, and even his own hands and feet. If you want to destroy with vent SHOW THEM things they've never seen before)

2 Ronn says he learned vent from a record course by JIMMY NELSON called INSTANT VENTRILOQUISM. I learned from it also , it is great and concise. You can likely find it on Ebay. Some smart dealer really should buy the rights to this and release it on CD or Cassette.

3 Any good or deluxe toy store carries a selection of puppets. They pack Small and play massive and are far more durable than pro dolls (which are heavy and can wipe out your hand).

4 I'm sure you know this, but for those who don't, go to MAHER STUDIOS who have a fairly affordable line of figures and teaching materials.
also Steve Axtell @

5 JAY MARSHALL killed with a glove puppet. another example you do not need an expensive figure for the audience to invest emotionally in your work.

6 Yes, I understand that a standard pro figure looks good in a PR shot, but what Kind of PR shot do WORLD CLASS vents use? A figure tells people you are a ventriloquist, but will not impress the pro/world class circuit who consider them too standard.

I hope this helps if your goal is to be world class and not just the usual.

Magical Aloha;

Remember Sherri Lewis, her vent figure, Lambchops, was a white sock. She packed Las Vegas clubs with that. Or Senor Wences, he used a little lipstick on hes hand.
