I read where someone painted a plunger to look like a magic wand. I have thought about painting a plunger this way. Does anyone know any good lines or jokes to use with a plunger? I appreciate all your comments.

If it's used in conjunction with the wizard hat ("Sorcerer's Apprentice" is the actual name of the effect I believe) - When I reveal the plunger on the kids head, I ask them if they feel ok... No matter what they respond, I say, "Well, you look a little flushed!"

I could also mention that my act is going in the toilet.

There are also wand possibilities with the toilet bowl scrub brush.
How about a game of throw the toilet paper roll threw a toilet bowl seat... removed from the "Throne" of course! Harris

I suppose for any Doctor Who fans out there a plunger, of course, has connotations with Daleks.

I find that if I do the gag of the plunger to myself instead of the child, that I not only get more laughs from the audience, I am showing that I respect the child a bit more and I find the adults appreciate this as well.
It happened as an accident as the one child I was performing this for years ago just did not seem to be the type that could sit still. I just placed it on my own head saying that the magic from the hat is what I need to make the trick work right. Of course I am searching for a wand so I use it from the hat and that automatically gets laughs. When the plunger ends up on my own head the kids go nuts. I also am in more control of the situation cause it is on my own head and I have the height advantage and do not have to worry about a kid taking it off or throwing it down disgusted etc. The laughter generated from this being on myself has been much greater then on any kid I ever used. You can use the whole "they see it, but you do not" principle here for killer laughs as you pretend to try and be serious to end your great routine. Try it, you may find that this works better for you. Kyle

I love to use toilet plungers and throughout my show I use about 4 different plungers for four different tricks. I have many one-liners I use but it depends on what the plunger is being used for...what are you going to do with the plunger?

After revealing the plunger on your or your helpers head and getting whatever laughs that brings, add "Well it looks like its time to plunge ahead" (emphasis on PLUNGE and aHEAD)

What is the top age you would use this effect for? Nine year olds? Is the 10 to 13 year old group too old for this? Thanks.

I don't know about everyone else...but I find that adults love plungers in the show just as much as kids if not more! It is because a toilet plunger is a funny looking thing and everyone knows what it is used for...there is always the question going on in the minds "wonder where that has been?". Even the words themselves are funny "TOILET PLUNGER". If used right, they can add a LOT of comedy to any show!

I use toilet plungers in a different way since I am also a juggler. I also have a bald head, so I stick one on my head and let the kids play ring toss. I do various bits with it and it is a highlight of my show. Some people know me just as the guy who sticks plungers on his head. I do various silly "impersonations" with it...unicorn, CN tower, bee....

I still find that using the plunger on my own head gets a much funnier repsonse and more adlibs from my audiences then if I place it on the kid's head. Has anyone else tried or expeirenced this as well?
I used to put it on the kid's head, but I always felt it was too much of me poking fun at the kid and embarrassing him for cheap laughs. I know there is a way to do it on the kid's head so you have fun with him and not make him or her feel bad about it. I just felt hmm maybe I can try it in a bit of different way and see what happens. I experimented with it and realized I got a much funnier repsonse when it was on my head. What I did was to say that the trick is not working because every magician and helper Must have a wizard magic hat for the magic to work properly. I give the kid a really nice delux looking hat to wear and when I go to look for mine, I can not find it. I find smaller one and not as great as the kids and mine has a price tag on it. "Hmm ooh hey look it says the previous onwer was a mister WAL......MART cool He must have been a great wizard." Gets a laugh and sets everyone up for the funny antics that go along with the routine. The magic wand ends up not working so we have to take the hat and use the magic left in the hat to make the magic happen. The kid waves the hat over and I take the hat wrapper off my own hat leaving the plunger on my own head. Noe the minute that plunger is seen on my head, the kids will start laughing theirselves silly. But, now it is at my own exspense and not aimed at the kid. The kid is doing everything right and it is me that is getting all the problems. He is made to be the star. Now when the kids start laughing and giggling you can always play this up by saying, "No laughing or giggling from this moment on. This is serious magic we are doing up here today with Jimmy's help. We must have total concentration and no funny business in order for this to work." Of the course the kids are just going to giggle more every time you tell them not to giggle. It just builds up the laughter. You also are in more control because it is on your own head. The kid can not reach up on his own head and toss it down and do anything to it before the effect is over. On my own head I have control of the situation and I can adlib off of the helpers and audiences reactions. It just works for me is all. Certainly this is not meant to say there is any one particular way of presenting this. I just find it works better for me. My humble opinion. =)) Kyle

I agree totally. It is better to have it on your own head. You are the entertainment. Your control is a lot better. There is a lot that could be said about this relating to the whole world of magic. Tricks like baffling bra and such can play well coming off on you. It's no wonder children grow up and become the adults who won't volunteer to help you on stage...too many negative experiences!

For me I just felt better poking the fun at myself. When I got better reactions this way, I thought I should experiment with it more. I found out not only did I get better reactions, but I could control the situation a lot more. This just works for me. To each his one I suppose.

I made some nesting wands out of PVC plumbing pipes but the obvious difference between the first one and the last one makes the trick, well, not much of a trick. So I use the two thinner ones earlier in my show when handing the wand to the helper. The line with this is either, "The wands are being silly again!" if I am going to use the next set of wands later on, Or "How the... How did you do that?" if I'm going more for a "Birthday Child is magic today" theme.
The larger two nesting wands are actually a wand and a plunger painted like a wand. I grab these two with a cloth covering the plunger part. I do this later in the show, and when the kid grabs the wand, I act amused yet a bit exasperated that the wands are still being silly. then I hand them the wand I am holding and say "here hold this one", and walk away with the cloth. This gets a great roar of laughter because it is so unexpected. Another thing I've seen with a plunger, but I don't do it, is where a performer puts on a helmet with a hard smooth surface, licks all around the rim of the plunger, reassuring everyone that he washed it, and tosses it up in the air, landing nicely on his head. Very funny. Very memorable. Utter nonsense. |

Tom,
You reminded me of a day at the school where I was a therapist. I was going around to small groups of kids, and was doing some silly stuff with my magic and clown props. I was using a sink plunger as a "Brain Checker", to see if they were using them. I also had a foam hammer to help put them back in. Anyway, I went up to a youngster who had the Michael Jordan look, and tried to plunger his brain out for a look. But,. . . the plunger acted the way it did on the helmet you noted above, and stuck to his head. Lesson learned; only use the plunger on kids with hair! The faint red ring on his head went away quickly.

I've always used the plunger on my own head. Never on a kid's head. I agree.

When I stick my plunger on my head for the ringtoss, I tell the kids "Never try this at home" I then lick the plunger "Yea, yours aren't clean!" I then plop it on my head. Later when I am going to be balancing various plungers on my chin, I state that I am going to do something with some very dangerous objects. Pull out the plungers "They are dangerous...because the question is...are they clean?" I then extend it towards someone's face.
I am from Stratford and one year we had Christopher Plummer performing at the Festival Theatre. At one of my shows that year, an audience member called out "Is your name Christopher Plumber?" I now use that idea periodically when I am with a group of adults. |
