Jay Marshall saw Houdini perform. He said he was boring and didn't do much of anything let alone magic.

That was probably back when Houdini was doing his anti-spiritualistic campaign.
Houdini was if anything an excellent paperhanger.

I'm sure I've even seen famous TV magicians do this in a small way to introduce some history to an effect they were bringing up to date in some way. |

That's the whole point -- a small way, which doesn't interfere with the actual flow of the presentation.

I'll bet that any seven year old would have had fits trying to sit through a 45 minute presentation of an escape done behind a cabinet. And I won't fault Jay's ability to remember things like this. He was brilliant up until he finally went away.

Personally, I think that putting history into magic is a great idea, Magic is so often considered just "tricks" in my opinion (key words there, feel free to disagree)magic should be showcased as an art, when I do escapes I always talk about houdini, randi, if doing a straitjacket bit I talk about insane asylums.
I think magic is to subjective for anyone to tell another maician that he/she is doing it "wrong". |

The problem with history, as known to most, is one of context.
When Houdini did escapes, it was a hot social/political issue just barely subconscious enough to be art. Today the message should be surface enough for even the ill read and facile thinkers to "get" When Randi did escapes, it was a tribute and while no longer socially relevant, none the less entertaining to see live. When someone does escapes today, it's usually just a trick. It would take some effort to make the feats relevant again. Why? or How come some might well ask. Most simply: handcuffs are now private amusement toys for the bedroom. The police have moved on to those plastic restrainers. Straitjackets are likewise relegated to the closet where trephanators and fancy electo-therapy stuff from early last century is now kept... in shame. Those who require restraint are shot up with Thorazine and wrapped up in a mattress, then if needs be, sat upon. The milk can? I dare say nobody here gets milk delivered in cans anymore. It was a dairy truck thing, and is now... nothing but a footnote in the history of magic. Okay, knowing what has been lost to history, one can move on to make pertinent and relevant entertainment again IF one is willing to make the stuff pertinent. Talking about asylums while doing a straitjacket escape is far too dark a form of humor to my taste. Let's get back to the escape idea itself... perhaps if one invented a story about bodies found in cases etc. The horrors of abduction and missing people found in strange crates. What would you do if... I'm not gonna comment about spelling, much less right and wrong in magic.

Jay always said that when he saw Houdini perform, he was so bored, he fell asleep in the audience, too!

Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Here's a quote from chapter 1: "Houdini was a terrible magician." You can find an excerpt from the first chapter here: The quote and Steinmeyer's appraisal of Houdini as a magician can be found about half way down. Seems strange you would argue for Houdini's skill as a magician based on this book. |
