It's where you have them pick a card and you put it on the deck in your left hand and then you shoot it to your right hand in a flip kinda thing, and then you flip it back to the deck one more time and then their card changes during the flip. If anyone knows the name of this trick and where I can get it, thanks.

If your talking about the David Blaine card juggling thing that he did in his first special. You need to learn it, not buy it as it's a series of moves.

I know people don't intend giving credit to the first person they see do something but rather the easiest way to talk about it seems to do this for them.
That card flipping thing was first shown to me by the king of oddities of the pasteboards, Paul Harris, about ten years ago. I believe he originated it, but I'm not certain of that. Funny, a lot of PH's stuff ended up on Blaine's specials. Tom Cutts |

Tom, Funny how it worked out like that huh
I knew who the originator of the effect was, but since I believe the person watched it on the Blaine special, I was trying to see if that was where they saw it, to find out if that was what they were talking about or not.

MagicMan,
Not that you were intending this but, in general, that is how we lose touch with our magical heritage and fail to pass the full texture of the magic community on. I do mean that as a general statement, not a specific one directed at anybody in particular. I had a big diatribe but it got obliterated by the backspace button. Just as well, it probably belongs under another section. Peace, out, Tom |

I'm not sure if a reference to Paul Harris helped you any. The closest thing I personally know of, having not seen the effect you described would be something I saw Lennart Green do. The move is called the Top Shot. I'm not kidding when I tell you that it is not easy to do. I'd suggest working up to something like that, so you don't try something so difficult as to become discouraged.
If you insist on trying this anyways, you can do a search on Lennart Green Magic on Google, and locate the series of videotapes he has. Best, Sean |

I guess we did dodge the actual question oops
The card flipping from hand to hand is a finesse move. Paul has taught it but everyone ends up with a slightly different take. I doubt there is any way words could give you enough info to get a good start. For me the index finger at front supplies the energy and the card releases off the thumb. Other than that it is practice, practice, practice. It takes a light touch. Consider if it is something you want to do for audiences or just other magicians. Some would say, and I would agree, that flashy florishes exhibit skill with the cards which may dispell the illusion of magic. As well as, too many of them may clutter up your magical framing. The picture you intend to create. Best of luck, Tom Cutts |

I first learned that move in Paul Harris' 'A Close-Up Kinda Guy' (Instant Replay, pg.126). That book is copyrighted in 1983 (back before David Blaines time). He credits the move(s) to Daryl, Magic Juan, and Eddie Fechter, though he doesn't detail it to what part belongs to who. The card change is used in his 'Tap Dancing Aces' (Las Vegas Close-Up pg. 91).

Another book on my "To buy list" I have his "Close-Up Entertainer" which I really like. I wasn't sure which one to get next, (Fantasies, Kinda Guy etc). I think I'll get the one you mentioned above.
Thanks for the ref. BTW anyone ever do his "Sidewinder" from Entertainer? |

You might be better served to buy "The art of Astonishment" trilogy. They contain pretty much everything in the old Harris books, as well as a lot of new stuff, in a much sturdier and attractive format.

If you want to buy an inexpensive Harris book get Super Magic. The torn and restored card is worth the price of the book.

When I learned something similar I was told it was called a "pip flip". Check out Ian Rowland's site and look for card shooting.
I learned first to shoot the cards face down onto your mat, then to the hand, then back to the deck. Good Luck, and I'm still working on it. (adding a DL and then shooting it is really possible, although I can't do it every time yet) |

Yes, the move was in Harris' book, though anyone interested in Harris these days should get the Art of Astonishment books which contain all the other books with some of his sub standard c**p edited out.
Sometimes though, he has improved/changed things, and I prefer the original presentations, such as Whack Your Pack, Flapjacks etc. Paul. |

After I saw Blaine perform this, I grabbed a deck of cards, kept replaying this scene over and over, got a subpar version of it going for me. Basically I just use a DL for the change, but who doesn't? I can't do the Double Card flip back out of the right-hand [the hand without the deck] though. Pretty hard...
