Hey Guys,
I was just wondering one thing about the 'VOODOO BOX' by Andrew Mayne. When the umbrellas-swords or what ever gets stabbed into the box, does the magician guide the things into the box through various holes which have been already cut out, or does it just randomly get chucked or thrown into the box? I've seen Maynes Umbrellas Through Head illusion, and this is why I ask. - Murby |

I saw it a few months ago on France TV, a magician by the name Kamleon did it and it was grate. I am thinking to add it to my show.

Are the items randomly thrown in or are they guided into the box?

The manuscript talks about 5 holes each side and one on top. The objects are not all randomly inserted.
I'm working on a version in which I play an annoying umbrella salesman. I think it's great to play with the audience this way. Of course noone wants to buy such a nice piece of artwork and my assistant is pretty bored by my performance. I'm put into the box -in which I carry the umbrellas, so it's part of the show instead of just a box on stage- and the items are swing into the box. After that they will be removed and I jump out, carrying my super soaker and wetting the audience. Now they regret they didn't buy an umbrella! Do you think this a good idea....? |

I've usually avoided these types of tricks because, after the moment of impact -- which is when 21 umrellas have apparently been thrust into your assistant -- you have to deal with all the "dead time" of removing 21 umbrellas, only to show what the audience pretty much knows: you assistant isn't dead. Yawn! So, what clever ways do you guys have to make this a thrilling illusion rather than a boring time-waster from the audience's perspective? Primarily, it's the second half of the trick that I think there's a potential problem with.

Dead time? You need to keep entertaining during this time ... I think Seigfied and Roy had that part mastered better than anyone else. You would be on the edge of your seat watching them remove umbrellas should they had done that trick, only to discover the assistant now had holes in her outfit or something to show the audience they don't know everything.

Andrew also came out with something similiar that I found much easier to assemble and better reactions when performed. It's called "Anything Goes" and like the Voodoo box, objects are thrust into a box holding you or your asistant. The difference is, instead of 20 umbrellas, you use items from garage sales and things in your garage. Like a rake, a ski pole, a tennis racket, ect. The comedy aspect of seeing things you don't normally see on a stage makes this one a winner. Imagine the audiences reaction when a box labeled "Swords" contains the above items (and then some)and the magician decides the show must go on. This comedy piece was described in one of his books, IllusionBook

Actually, JoeJoe, the best I've seen with this is Larry Wilson. The way he removes the blades from his "Cutting in 6's" is a riot!
But there's still a lot to contend with when your removing 21 umbrellas, at the same time trying to retain the powerful moment of climax. I think it's something that the rare performer can really do. I like to think that I know my restrictions and do the best stuff I can to keep my program interesting and moving. |

I guess I could be one of those "rare" performer's...hehehe.
This is how I took care of dead time removing the umbrellas...pull them out 2 at a time and as soon as they come out of the box, automatically press the buttons and open the umbrellas at the same time. Once all the umbrellas are opened, they totally fill the entire stage and makes this illusion seen so much bigger, what a way to finish a show! Also, I use the trick Sack-X where my assistant is put in the bag and then the box. johnny

I hope you are Johnny!
But (and this isn't necessarily aimed at you, Johnny), opening 21 umbrellas to fill a stage can be a far cry from keeping things moving and entertaining. Yeah, it can look "big" at the end, but is it entertaining the audience? I have seen magicians perform the "Flower Garden," pulling countless feather bouquets from countless more tubes and bulky cloths, filling the stage with color ... but with absolutely no excitement or entertaining aspects; just a lot of stuff. Sometimes I think we, as magicians, fool ourselves into thinking we are doing something great when to the audience it's one big snooze. I don't mean for this to sound negative, just an observation that I think illusions of this type can suffer from having the moment of impact in the middle of the trick (which is why a costume change adds so much to a Sub Trunk routine.) |

Is this a whole person in the box effect or an on the head only effect? Any videos of this out there?

Steve
The whole body is pushed in the box. No arms, legs or head popping out. I don't have a video of it. I have never seen a video of it. I even didn't see anyone performing this act. Many years ago I saw on Dutch television a guy. He was chained, his arms, legs and body. He was put inside of an empty paper bag. The bag was inserted with objects (I can't remember what type of objects, it may have been swords) and after that he got out. But the chains were gone, he wore a clowns' custome and even his face was painted. And the bag was filled with real living ducks, I can still remember. Because I liked this trick I bought the Voodoo Box only to find out that the mechanics were a little bit different. Though I still like the Voodoo Box. |

Yup. That's him. Thanks.
By the way speaking of dead time. What's all yours opinions about the number of umbrellas. Does inserting 21 umbrellas make more magic then inserting five of them (one on each side and one from above)? |
