Ok as you guys may have seen I have been trying to better myself at coin magic and put down the cards for awhile. I can Edge grip, retention, goshman, Downs palm , thumb clip, muscle pass, and a few others but all with my left hand I am horrible with my right. I fear that this might shun me away from lots of routines. Is there any advice you guys out there who I have seen and respect provide?

Yes, keep practicing all moves with both hands. It will only make your magic better. Maybe you won't be able to do all the sleights, but what you can do will make you a better magician!

Everything should be able to be done with both hands, confidently. Muscle pass, not necessary. For sure, you should be able to Classic palm, finger palm, thump palm downs palm and edge palm with both hands. And they are in order of importance. it is ok though to be better with one hand than the other.
I agree with Michael.

I have found that people are more likely to burn your right hand when doing close-up, and pulling a switch with the left really adds to the effect.

I can definitely see where the advantage would be nice to be ambidextrous with coin work. But you don't bother with cards do you? I don't.
I know this. I can do a classic palm, a couple of false transfers, and three click passes with each hand. For the time being, it works for me.

In my opinion you should be able to perform all the various palms with both hands extremely well. The retention pass can be done with your dominant hand as well as the muscle pass. Coin roll with both hands since it is a flourish.

I would suggest master the slieghts that your routines you are performing and want to perform in the future call for. I took a whole year of my life to learn card manipulations : split fans, back palm, transfers, etc. Sometimes I feel like it was a waste because I do not use that stuff in any of my close up, parlor, and stage shows. However it is kind of cool to mess around with when I am bored.

It took me a while for my card stuff too. But I guess I just forgot how it felt to start all over with a new hand.

I do EVERYTHING in both hands...that is the only way to go....It will save you in a lot of circumstances. Even the hard moves you should learn in you dominate and non dominate hands. You will thank me later.....

There isn't a rats chance in a cathouse that I'm about to re-learn the classic pass, the one hand top palm, or a plethora of other card sleights with my left hand (or as a left handed cardician would). I do, however, concede that knowing how to do as much as possible with my left hand, or left-handed, would definitely make me a more flexible performer but it wouldn't change my ability to effectively perform (if that makes sense). I would most certainly, and without reservation, advocate that any and all coin work should be given equal time left and right.
I'd stop at going as far as De'Vo has and forego learning how to shuffle with my feet. |

Any move that practice, I practice it with both hands; it is much better if you practice certain move simultaneuosly with both hand, that way if you are a righty or letfy, as you right fingers are doing the move, your left finger will copy that move and it is easier and faster to learn on both hands.
I'm a long distance runner and when I run, I run with 8 morgan silver dollar 4 on each hands, so as I run I tranfer them to 7 diffent palm, starting with mutobe palm, and finishing in classic palm; somtimes I just do the whole run in downs palm or finger palm etc. So Paisa 23, that is the way to go these days,so it does not hurt to be an ambidextrous coin worker. Have a good day everyone. Mano. |

Paisa,
For the beginning of a slightly different answer to your question, see: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......69&2 And just from experience, I'd say: 1. CP 2. EG are necessary in both hands. FP also, but that should be no problem. Everything else has been well worth learning, but no sense bleeding over.

I completely agree with curtis. And a thumb palm shouldn't be too hard either.

It helps me both in magic and with my nearly normal brain to work with both hands.
My nearly normal coins across with washers(I call them brain washers) uses things like the tenkai pi_ _ with both hands. I was tickled today when I read the 2005 September Genii. David Groves was kind enough to mention our nearly normal jam and play time with coins, in his article on his lecture tour. Be safe, well and creative.
