Okay, so I've been studying magic intently for two years now. I finally performed my first two shows (40 min each) back to back at the local residential youth home. Now I have been asked to perform at a local children's birthday party. I have enough stage material to do this gig well. Given my experience, and location (Georgia), how much should I charge? There is literally NO competition in my area (St. Simons Island). Where can I go for guides on an appropriaate contract and invoice?
Thanks |

This is a very difficult question. Depending on the market, competition, and general health of the local economy, a birthday party price can vary greatly. I would invite you to ask yourself - How much is my time worth? How much time have I invested in practice and rehearsal? Do I have a polished act filled with routines that I truly know? Then ask your client - What kind of magical experience do they want for their birthday girl/boy? What other types of entertainment have they used in the past? Then, if you can, ask - What range were you looking to spend? Regarding contacts and invoices, I would not worry about it for a birthday party. After you have settled on a price, boot up your word processor. Write a professional letter detailing the agreement, date, time, location, etc. Spell out that payment is due on the day of the show... ...you should be good to go! All the best on your party adventure! Be magic ~ Fredrick

MJ, I agree with what Fredrick said in his post, but the simple answer based on your initial post... is about $40.00 - $60.00 bucks!
Good luck! Lyndel |

Thank you, gentlemen. Your responses were quite helpful. I believe I have settled on $50.00. After all, it is my first paid show ever! I think I may ask for $51.00 dollars, so that I can frame my first dollar earned from conjuring!

I'm in Atlanta and would love to connect if possible. Let me know if you're coming this way.
Going rates for good birthday shows in my area are $150.00 to $200.00 and up. With your area being such a resort area, I can't see why you should leave your house for less than $100.00! Assuming you have a show you're confidently ready to perform. JMT |

Does anyone on this topic know anything about David Dee's marketing material?

Dear Joe and folks,
Here at St. Simons Island, money grows on trees, so I had been thinking somewhere around $100.00 at first, but then Lyndel swayed me in the other direction. I also thought about upping the ante by offering to sell the mom beginners magic tricks for the goodie bags (I could buy the tricks wholesale, probably dime and penny or another high traffic item). Also, I (after just performing at my church,) have been offered another gig at a "neighborhood party" where strolling would be the need. Prime-time for business cards and advertizing. I learned some things from the past four free shows that I have done, and am eager to use what I've learned for this upcoming paid gig. Mr. Turner, how many magicians are in Atlanta these days? |

Paradox,
I bought Dave Dee's new updated marketing manual last week. I think it is superb! Provided you want more or better quality bookings. I buy virtually everything that he writes and the new version link below is cheaper than ever before and with the type of money back guarantees he is giving it's a winner in my book. Ken Scott lives in Atlanta you can ask him what he charges. But you will never get it. IMO Lyndel's advise is about right.

Seems like the advice he got was not very helpful as he didn't hang around very long.
