Out of curiosity I ordered and just received "The Mental Key" by Carlyle and I must say I am very happy. The Key has been very well aged and Carlyle's handling notes are extremely well written.

I also simply like owning a key that has been custom aged by the 1st resident Medium of the Magic Castle and who's father worked for Houdini.

Agreed Eddie! I just received "The Mental Key" by Carlyle today and I LOVE IT! It's a really nice effect that I will be using for years to come, and the antiquing he's done is excellent!!

Great Shots!
Mr. Carlyle has heaps to teach in "Seance" the Scott Moore-Davis collection of Seance magazine. Highly recommended. |

I present it as psychokinesis, so there's no need to age the key.
Does anyone perform this on the tip of the finger (as described in "Body Magic" or "The Busch Factor")? Barry |

This is basicly window-dressing, but I've figured up two minor effects that go well with the ussual 'haunted key' story.
>When the key is first brought out, it has an unnatural chill. So cold it litteraly frosts over. >When the key is put back in it's case and the lid shut, a shrieking sound is heard. (no, it's not an electronic device.) The method depends heavily upon good storytelling to not be seen through immedietly. My method only available by PM to those with 50 posts or more. (I don't think it's too blindingly obvious though.)

Unfortunatly, while I was on a business trip in Toronto Ontario I happened to catch Jay Sankey on a kids show revealing the working of the haunted key ... way to go Jay.
I'm no longer a fan -- he's removed a piece from every working performers pro repetoire... :-(

The Haunted Key seems destined to become the bizzare magic version of the D'lite, and that's quite sad. G

Don't worry guys, exposure is as old as magic itself - it hasn't killed it in the past, and it won't in the future. The only real threat to magic comes from the magicians themselves.
Evolve or watch your art die. One of my favorite uses for the haunted key now is to use it with the gizmo listed in my signature, (you can build your own) where I can tell a story about Ben Franklin flying the kite in an electrical storm, and how he touched the key and got a (mild) shock. I won't go into the whole thing, but you get the idea. One other thing, in regard to "normal" haunted key usage - I much prefer the Fun Inc. key to the gold colored Spirit key, it's more solid and better balanced.

I just don't understand why Sankey doing it isn't a big deal to the community. Angel exposes the same salt shaker trick in every amatuer magic book and we fly off the handle...whats up witht hat?

I agree Bill. I've learned many a trick from Sankey, but for him to give away the secret for this illusion, which I just startd using btw, really sucks.
That said, I won't stop using it just because he gave it away. Even those that Criss Angel gives away won't take much from us as magicians, since most folks won't have seen the illusion exposed (only so many folks see those shows). It just hurts to see so many magicians jumping on the exposure bandwagon these days. Scott

Yeah, Shots, and it is usually someone you otherwise respect. I really don't think exposure is anywhere near as bad as most magicians make it out to be. People don't remember things they have no real interest in. Exposure has been going on since the Stone Age (the Paleolithic!) and magic and magicians still survive. Still, I don't like it, especially when the really nice secrets are exposed.

Today I had occasion to visit a local botanica, and found that they had these huge skeleton keys for sale, three different types. I checked each of them and found that one of them worked perfectly--so naturally I had to buy it for all of $7. Now I don't know which one I like best. The smaller one works very well, but the sheer size of the larger one makes it seem even stranger when it starts moving.
So if you're looking for larger keys, check out your local botanica!!

I use the haunted key all the time and use the patter that comes with the key. What I have done is gone to the craft store and picked up stuff you can put on it to make it look like its very rusty. It adds to the wierdness of the whole effect.

I took my Haunted Key and buried it for about a month in the backyard. I watered the area heavily several times, so the dampness could really get to work on it. When I took it out, it looked okay, but was still too shiny. Several days later, we had a barbeque, so once the steaks were off the grill, I dropped the key right into the glowing coals. The next day I fished it out, rinsed it off in the sink, and it looked great. The combination of the burial and the heat made it look just perfect... and it didn't cost me anything to do it.

My question is, after digging it up and barbequeing it, didn't anyone even bother to taste it ?

Just a note on aging.
I rubbed my new key with fine grit metal sandpaper, and put it in a small tray with pure laundry bleach- just enough to cover it. It began to rust- and I changed the bleach every couple of days- dumping out the old and adding new. I also wiped down the key with a rag each time- because the rust tends to "grow" on it like a moss. Within a week - I had a totally brown key- completely rusted over. It really looks ancient now. I believe the sanding is necessary first to remove a bit of the shiny-coat of the exterior. |

Yes, both Fun Inc. keys and MagicMakers keys are coated with a lacquer (or similar) to prevent rust, so that really has to come off first. After that, it's open season on the key's surface.
