We open in a new show tomorrow at the Rose Theater in Omaha for a 50 show run. This is not a Magic show per say, there are however 3 tricks that all result in the death of a dove as the main charcter, Izzy tries to perform feats of classic magic.
I would like to make my partner in this Vaudeville revue appear via a large squared circle. I'm looking for suggestions on materials to make the unit with without using cardboard . The unit must be light enough to lift and durable enough to take the rigors of this show. Any input? |

For the tube you can purchase one of those fiberboard barrels from a barrell or cardboard box company. Make the outer part of plywood with gridwork scrollsaw fashioned and instead of a gimmick tube I'd use some artful blackart cloth as camaflague.
This has been on my to do list for about 5 years. I got the barrel much to the upset of my wife, it sits in the basement. I was going to make a giant version of the Mark Wilson Top Hat style square circle. Good Luck. Frank Tougas

Plastic drums could be used. Or for a really portable fold down one , you could use cloth covered frame of a couple of hula hoops attached together. The outer box can be made of wood or cloth covered frame.
This has also been on my to do list. Andrew Mayne has a Zombie one described in IllusionBook |

Chris Cary, in his "Do the Stuff that is You" booklet has the Statue of liberty rise from a large square circle. He has a nice drawing of it so one gets the idea on how to do it.
The inner circle is a half circle with short steps so it look like the assistant rises from the square circle. It is a worthy article Dutch.

Ralph Adams did this years ago and it is in his book. Remember the chambers do not have to be round. His were square. Use Foam core or the material they use for signs to sell cigarettes or pop. Cover with fabric or contact paper.
If you need a tube, use a pop up laundry hamper with the bottoms removed. Look at lightweight kid's storage unit. The cardboard tubes are heavy (Sonoco tubes). Richard

Dean, is that act based on the infamous "Morto the Magician" flash video done by Steve Martin, where the magician went through quite a few doves.

Instead of using foam core board, which is rather fragile and not as durable as one would hope look into the corrugated plastic sheeting that is used in vinyl sign shops these days. It is light, easy to work with and comes in a variety of colours.
You can find out about it here http://www.dickblick.com/zz132/00/

I have been producing my daughter from a Square Circle for a few years now. Actually it is a square square as that gives me the ability to pack the illusion flat.
All the boxes are made from corrugated plastic and color duct tape. The square has an aluminum grill on the front that you can clearly see through but limits the amount of light that gets in the box. The inner box is made of red plastic for a sharp contrast. The gimmick is made out of the same black plastic as the outer box and flat black gaffers tape. It works really well. |

Gentelmen,
Brilliant! I love it when the pro's put on thier thinking caps. I have begun construction today and will do the gag in Thursdays show. To MCM: I don't know the aforementioned routine though I'm sure it's great with Steve Martin doing it. What we do is start the show by appearing a beautiful dove from a top hat only thing is ...The assistant hits the top hat with his hand trying to kill a fly and the magician dosent know it .Of course when he reaches into the top hat the dove is a crushed pile of feathers. The second gag is when we take a balloon and after a few minutes of hi-jinks the magician takes aim on the balloon held by his assisitant and accidently kills the dove and the assisitant. The third part is a squared circle routine that first produces 2 small silks, then because of my partners bantering and mockery of the small silks I produce about 30 large silks that I use to cover him completey. Here's the part I like, I reach back in the squared circle to flourish a dove and suddenly it drops from my hand to the back of a covered table. Without warning the "Dove" runs off stage doing wild ,uncontrolled circles.(Small radio control car with feathers glued on it) I love to jack with the audience this way as they never do get to see a real LIVE dove.
