Hi, I do enjoy mentalism and have some books, dvds etc. on the subject, however I am mainly interested in street/close-up magic, so this is my first venture into the mentalism forum here at the Café. Anyway I am having some problems with the center tear, I know simple ones and I have Richard Osterlinds Mind Mysteries vol. 1, so I also know the PCT, which is brilliant, and the one I would choose to use, my problem however is I want to do some mind reading/mentalism effects on the street/close-up, the center tear is ideal for this because obviously nothing needed except some paper and some good presentation, but my problem is justifying taking the piece of paper they wrote something down on and tearing it up, it kind of doesn't make any sense to me, especially when you begin by saying I want you to write it down to focus the thaught or something. Anyway if someone could help me either by PM if it shouldnt be in an open forum, or on here it would be much appreciated. Thanks

PMed you. But Mr Osterlind himself comes onto the forum every now and again, and I am sure he would be able and pleased to help.

Hi,
one way of doing it is to ask the person you are working with to write the name, word, whatever on the paper, then to show it around to 2 or 3 people once they have done this take it back and say "we don't need this anymore just think of the name or whate ever", then tear it up. don't worry about it, look confident, just do it and nobody will call you on it. Now to be honest even if you asked someone to write something down then tore it up without any justifaction, they don't care and why should they, they don't know what to exspect (most of the time) so why would they call you on a procces when they don't know whats coming (hope this makes sence). Hope this helps Darren |

Jayp,
That is a question that you must answer for yourself or you will always be giving yourself away psychologically... On a subconscious level, things must sit well with you first. ...welcome to mentalism! Just as you have to justify a certain action to perform a pass or control, in close-up, in mentalism you must subtlely justify writing things down or looking in a certain direction to get a glimpse at some info. Vernon holds true... be natural, surely their is a reason to do what you have to write or glipmse. Be creative (and read lots of Cassidy, Mark Strivings, Annemann, etc.). Yes this is bold (and simple), or so to speak. That is mentalism my friend! Cheers, Sean |

Jay,
I just take the paper, hold it for a second and say, "I need to touch it." Then I tear it up and hand it back. The phrase, "I need to touch it" is my ONLY justification and I never have a problem with it. People expect PROCEDURE. There is nothing wrong with procedure and it is abundant everywhere in movies, television, etc. (Check out Harry Potter) You are the mystery man and if you say you have to touch it for a moment, then you have to touch it. Period. You might try a "silent script" in your mind such as "As I hold this paper, some type of thought comes into my mind. As I tear up the paper, psychic energy is released that I can tune into." This is a SILENT SCRIPT and not something you say out loud. But just believe it as you do it and your actions will come across as meaningful. Richard |

Some other strategies are to to have them write out more than one slip to get a bit of variety, and then choose one to concentrate on and eliminate the other by tearing it up. Bruce Bernstein, Bob Cassidy (name/place) Jas Jakutsch have routines like this where you then comeback and divine the destroyed one too. The Jakutsch one uses three billets, two of which are eliminated. The demonstrater and the volunteer each shred slips of the volunteer's choosing at the same time so that third can be divined more easily, then the two torn ones are divined as well. There are undoubtedly other routines where the CT is part of a larger routine, and not stand alone, but the ones I noted came to mind.

Thanks Richard for the help, I will try that out, and thanks RLFrame for the tips also. I will give all the ideas ago and see which one works the best for me, I like the idea of the silent script, so that in my own head the process is justified, thanks.

Jayp,
If it suits your style, you can have someone write down a fear i.e. fear of flying. You take back the paper and tear while explaining that by destroying the paper- you've destroyed her fear. Tell her not to worry-you see her traveling the world someday with absolutely no fear of flying! You could really work on your coldreading skills as you will meet many humans on the street.

Great idea ranpink. Never thought of that one. You could do it as a voodo routine, like someone you want to, um, not have to deal with anymore. Or something about yourself you want to change. Good angle, well done.

Bernstein has a superb routine along those lines - it's called "The Ritual" I think.

I think the dialogue that Bob Cassidy uses concerning the visualization of a dark movie theatre and a white screen; and the placing of the letters in bold black colour on the screen might also work. Perhaps a small comment about mentally transplanting the letters on the billet onto the screen might work as well.
For what it's worth I think we can "worry" too much about being caught out, particulaly with the centre tear. I use Richards center tear method and have never been quizzed on either the writing of it or the tearing of it. One thing I do however is after tearing the paper into bits and placing the bits into the punters hands, I keep a piece that is blank on both sides. I make comments about being able to feel an aura, or being able to pick up some impressions of what he/she is thinking. The focus shouldn't be on the tearing up, it's an afterthought, I think Richard is 100% correct in what he has listed here, and what he has written elsewhere about this part of the effect. IMO the focus should be on the revelation itself, whether or not it's a simple matter of revealing the name/place/number-doing a drawing duplication etc., or in doing a bit of cold reading, working the revealed bits into the dialogue. I think that it's amazing that a small squared sheet of paper can be used to such great effects that can last for anywhere from 2-10 minutes. |

Cassidy's name and place is the first time I was exposed to the idea of destroying to elminate it thus putting the focus on the non-destroyed one. What a brilliant method of misdirection. That snippet of the video alone was the reason I bought his DVD.

Yes, it is a great DVD..... so many variations with this switch also. I have started to spin off Name/Place into other avenues.
