Hi guys,

I know many performing magicians have been striving to produce a person without the use of a traditional 'box'.

One popular method which looks great in the right setting is the use of a cloth as a momentary cover atop a B.A. table. Andrew Mayne details a relatively simple method without a table in his 'Secret Illusion Show' booklet.

I thought you might be interested in my solution to a practical 'non-traditional' appearance.

It was conceived, designed, built and rehearsed over a period of 9 months.

You can check it out here: http://www.illusionbooks.com/benchmark.html

All the best,

It's really clever and looks good, though I would prefer the bench to be made to look more like one rather than looking like an illusionary prop. At first sight, I was wondering what's that. I would believe that would not affect the working of the illusion and greatly enchance the appearance.

I'm not sure but wouldn't it be better to have the table and bench in slightly different color so as to create a better separation of the two? Rather to have a huge prop that looks like nothing like having a bench on a table to me.

Well, I could go on and on cause I didn't come up with it.

Then again, what do I know.

Congrats for coming up another great illusion, Jan.

Hi Alex,

Good points!

The design I chose and built upon was a deliberate design feature to complement the other props on stage in the context of the illusion act I perform it in as a set.

I was going for a distinctly 'illusionary prop/ cutting edge-look' to add to the production value of the show in general.

You can build it to look like a bench on a dolly and I suggest that in my design package, just as long as certain design elements are maintained to guarantee deceptiveness and speed. As you would expect, the prop is not a 'simple' as it looks. But, yes, I can clearly see how a themed 'Benchmark' would fit a specific type of act/ presentation.

The colour difference is possible but might also impact the visual deceptiveness of the illusion, depending on the precision of the building. Again, this would make perfect sense if an alternative aesthetic look to the prop was built.

In the case of my current design for my shows, then, thematically, the single colour scheme with aluminum and stainless steel trim works well.

Thanks for the comments!

Best,

J C

Are you suggesting the asking price for the prop itself?? or for the plans? Cause if for the prop. WOW what a deal. Still a neat prop.

JC calls it a 'design package'. Would be plans only Mike.

Hope you are well,
