Fellow Mentalists:
In my show, I'd like to incorporate an add-a-number type effect. I'd have different audience members write down random numbers on a "pad" and then have a spectator on stage add up the "freely chosen" numbers. I've selected a method to switch the numbers but I am looking for an original way to reveal the the successful prediction. Marc Salem uses a tape recorder. I've seen performers write huge numbers on a paper towel roll and unroll the roll across the stage revealing the prediction. But I am looking for something unique. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Scott

Might I humbly suggest to use your imagination? I bet you can come up with something good and original if you give it some thought. I'm sure that Café members will come up with some good ideas as well, but I wonder if sometimes we're too quick to look to others for ideas instead of flexing our own imaginations.
On the other hand, it's invaluable to have a community like this for advice... |

I think the most unique way to reveal the number is to incorporate your own personality into it. If you want some big production of the number that's fine, but what does it say about the effect? Remember, the effect is that you have a prediction and 4 numbers are written down on a pad and the numbers and prediction match.
I've played with the idea of enlisting the help of 4 volunteers. Before each show I tell 4 seperate volunteers one number and tell them to lock it in their mind, don't write it down, etc. I then ask those volunteers upon stage and they tell their numbers and I show my prediction, which is in an envelope. I liked it when I first did it for a few shows, then I realized that this is a prediction trick and should be performed as such. |

One thought, if you use someone else's idea how can this possibly be unique?
I think Luke Jermay has an interesting version where the numbers are the telephone number of his mobile. |

Hi,
I used to ask a random person to remove a 5 or 10 pound note, seal it in a envelope then pin it to the wall. Id then ask 4 people to write some numbers down then have someone add up the total, when the note was removed the serial number matched to the final total. Its easy use a teleport envelope with a stack of buisness cards and use a DL to switch the numbers. Just a thought Darren |

Have the solution wrapped around a pigeon's leg, and then have the bird "fly in" for the revelation...
Actually, anything you could think of would work, because you are simply revealing what happened in the "hard" part. Like, have someone go and plunge a toilet, only to find a ziplock baggie with your note in it, that was flushed before the show... See? As long as it works...<grin> Lee |

Consider taking out a classified ad in the local newspaper and have a committee person bring that day's paper to the performance with them...

To use the phrase KISS, IMHO, can't imagine doing an add-a-no without using the Kozar pad.

I think that the " Mobile Opener" is the best way to reveal it.
It involves all the audience at once It is used by all the big big names! Used to be 105$ for 3 years and now for 55$ only Lior +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Knight's Tour on the Big Screen

Lior Manor's Mobile Opener and Gregory Arce's Awe-Sum Total are two of the most effective presentations you can get for this kind of plot.
Alternatively, other very good ideas came from Barrie Richardson with words and anagrams (I don't remember now where I read those ideas) and from Bob Farmer with words and with phone numbers. As for Luke Jermay's phone numbers plot I recall having read some years back a very similar thing, but it was from Ted Lesley. Modesty prevents me (not) to mention I also came up with some twists using a mixture of different methods. Ultimately, with some thinking on your part (as others have mentioned) you can come up with some thing you feel you own.

Btw, I can give some of you, some little ideas I elaborated few years ago.
It's a very short pdf file featuring TWO DIFFERENT WAYS to get what I would call a ROOM SERVICE MEETS ADD-A-NUMBER kind of effect. The effect title is "The Grey Bear Mystery" and I will send it with my compliments to the first 10 people who will PM me with their e-mail address. After that number will have been reached I will stop and turn my PM box off again.

In my younger years, when I was "solo", I did the add a number in this fashion..
I had a LARGE number painted or taped on LARGE paper to the back wall of the theater for all to see, should they look. It was there on arrival to the theater. Most never noticed it! It was big enough for the whole audience to see. If someone went to the john/jane, or the concession stand, the number was right there. It was unusual for someone to pay attention to it, let alone remember it. They are not focused on the back wall of the theater/venue. What's the miles on your car? It's there, right in front of you. Did you ever really know? Did you actually remember the number on the door of the office you went to today? I'll bet you had to rmemeber it from your notes, after you visualized the door! After the number was chosen, and the house lights come up, I asked everybody to just, "turn around and look at the back wall!!! You get the rest...for the workers....you owe me! For what it's worth, Ted (Leondo) |
