Hi guys,
I caught the tail end when Kyle talked about performing for the kids at the hospital. That was inspiring in itself. You can't place a monetary value on that kind of experience. I am in the process of putting together a little promo pack to distribute them to the local hospitals, so the broadcast hit home with me. THANKS! Jack

Many thanks my friend. That one moment really changed my entire outlook on not only my magic, but how I deal with people and clients. It really sunk home to me that my magic can mean so much to so many people and that I need to share this gift with others in the best manner that I can. I hope you enjoyed what you heard and that others may have gotten some good advice from it. I was honored that Dean asked me to be on the air last night and I am honored that so many folks tuned in and sent me e-mails of congratulations. I am not sure if it will be reaired or not, but if so, then you may have a chance to here it in its entirety. I am not sure how things air over there as I forgot to ask Ryan and Dean last night. At any rate, it was a real pleasure spending time With Dean and being able to share some of my thoughts with you all. Kyle

Tom,
Thanks so much for the kind words. It is greatly appreciated. Mom would be so proud to know that I might just amount to something afterall. I just hopoe that now that some folks have actually heard my voice, they don't get scared and start running to the hills. hehehe On a serious note, thanks again. I am glad you enjoyed it and I am equally grateful for folks like yourself and for Dean who have given me a chance to talk about my own success and how others can do the same. I am not sure if it will be rebroadcast or not. I am not sure how Dean and Ryan do that. I may have to ask for those who fif not get a chance to hear the entire thing. I am also trying to get a full copy of the braodcast as my wife was not able to listen that evening when I was on and I would love for her to hear it as well. I hope people got something meaningful out of what I had to say. Kyle

Thanks for the kind words. I am about half way through writing it and also need to do the reference guide to go along with it. It is taking me time, but I want to do it right so that it will help out as many people as I can through good and proper information. Because my wife and I are deep into our festival saeson, trying to find time to write the book has beocme harder for me. I am planning on writing more the next few months and really trying to get it done in early to late fall. I will certainly try and keep people posted if there is still a desire from f olks for me to get this book out. It is starting to become more of a festival and fair system then a book as the project just keeps growing. It will porbably include a book, a separate reference guide book with samples as well as trying to include the full broadcast from the other night as a part of the package. Sorry ifI am babbling here. I do not mean this to come across as an ad or anything so I will cut it short for now. Just know that I am working on the project and hope to get it done real soon. Kyle: Thanks also for your kind words as well. I am glad people enjoyed the show and I hope you got something out of it. I am not sure if it will be reaired, but I will try and find out for those who may not have gotten a chance to hear the entire broadcast.

I really should be the one thanking you Dean. I appreciated you letting me share my thoughts on your pogram the other night. You and Ryan made it so easy for me and I just hope some of what I said may have inspired or helped others out there. That to me is what it is all about.
I also hope that you personally received some good comments about the show and such. If you did, I would love to know what others thought. I tend to ramble on, but I hope some of what I said was helpful and made for a fun night. We will have to do it again once my festival book project is finished and such. That is if you would want to. It would be my pleasure. I need to try and e-mail Ryan again. I would love to get a copy of the broadcast as my wife was not able to listen to it. Would this be possible Dean? Kyle PS: I would like to extend an offer to anyone who listened to the broadcast that if you have any questions, issues or concerns about anything I stated on the air, please feel free to PM me or ask Dean and myself here as we would be happy to answer or help you out in any way possible. Thanks.

Yes Kyle, we will get you a copy of your show... I have a few things to edit and tag on it then I will get you a copy brother... a great ad-on bonus for you upcoming book on fairs & festivals.
Have you names you book yet? Maybe a course “naming contest” might be in order? Winner gets THE FIRST Signed Copy of the book from YOU? (Just an idea!) "The Un-'FAIR' Advantage! The Inside Secrets to Making Money at Fair & Festivals!" Wadda' ya' think? (Hehehehehe!) Who's NEXT!?! Deano <>< PS I will do a chapter for ya' as well if ya’ want: "Secrets of The Fair Talent Booker! Veteran County and State Fair Entertainment Director Reveals What You Absolutely MUST KNOW if Your Truly Want To Be Successful Getting The Undivided Attention Of Fair Buyers And Actually Win Real Paid Contracts!" if ya' want me to... (If that'll help!) Let me know when you are done, and will put that together for you if you want the professional "buyers" perspective anyway.

Dean:
Thank you so much for the offer to get me a sample of the finished braodcast. I would love to have it for myself as well as to allow my wife to listen to it. She came in half way through and only got to hear me babbly... which to her is not all that thrilling. hehe It would be great for her to hear the entire thing and such. So thanks to you and ryan in advance for getting that out to me. Just let me know what I need to do or give you to make that happen. I had a tentaive name for the book project. I was simply going to call it "The Entertainers Guide to Working Fairs and Festivals!" However, I sort of like your example and possibly your idea of having or hosting a contest for a good name for the book. It certainly is not a bad idea at all and could be a lot of fun. PM me if you would as I would love your thoughts on how might be the best to set that up. Thanks for the idea. If anyone else has ideas for my book project, please let me know. I would be happy to hear your thoughts on this. I almost fianted when I read you would be willing to do a chapter in the book for me. WOW!!! I am very honored that you would do that for me Dean. So the answer is YES, YES and OH MY GOD YES! hehehe That would be a wonderful addition to the book and I think stuff that would be of value to those who want to work the festivals and from a different perspective entirely. Let me know what you would need or how you would like to work this out. I am very flattered and can not thank you enough for offering. For everyopne else that tuned in to the original broadcast, I want to personally thank you for listening and tuning in. I hope that some of what I said may have inspired you or gave you ideas of your own to help you get started on your own road to success. My goal, like this website, is to be able to help those who want to help themselves. That is what makes the Café a great place to be. Where magicians can help magicians and realize that it is Ok that we can often agree to disagree. So thanks to all that tuned in and if anyone has any questions about what was mentioned in the broadcast or if you have any personal questions about working festivals or fairs, please let me know and Dean and/or myself will try and answer them for you the best that we can. Thanks again. Kyle

Randy,
Thanks so much for the kind words. I am sorry you did not get the chance to hear the broadcast. Perhaps they may reair it at some time in the future. I am not sure how Dean and Ryan manage that stuff so that is in their hands. I am just grateful to both of them for allowing me to share my ideas and thoughts on the air. Now I am just really busy trying to get that book project worked on and trying my best to do it the right way so it benefits as many people as I can with the information I have to share. Hopefully I will get it done soon. I will be sure to let you all know how I progress with it. Thanks again for the kind words Randy. Kyle

Randy,
Many thanks my friend. I am currently in the middle of writing the book as we speak. I am about half way through. I so badly want to get it done asap., but I am really trying to force myself to take my time with it to do it right the first time so that it really gives you guys exactly what you need to know and tips on what has worked for me in this great market I now do. I have indeed taken tips and writings from some of my threads and posts here and also researched and gatrhered up my other articles I have written years back and many new ideas I keep in a notebook. It is all written down and just ready for me to add it in and edit it to the chapters I am having in the book and reference guide. I will get it done. Don't you worry. Thanks so much for everyone's support in this prject. It is the first time I have tackjled anything like it, and I appreciate all the encouragement and help I have received from so many of you. I just hope that the book and reference guide live up to the quality you all deserve. Kyle

Hello Kyle,
In months past I've gathered up and been trying to digest some old material regarding SHOWMANSHIP. There's some great publications available and some of us want more! For those who think they understand and have a commanding use of the worn out term, skip this post, go forward, and sin no more. The rest of us will continue to polish that ole'diamond in the rough. Lord knows if entertainers had even the slightest grip on this phenomenon the stage would be a better place. I refer to showmanship as a phenomenon because it's rarely witnessed in my opinion. In my 20's I was really caught up with method and execution. I often hear amateurs say "I may not be a McBride or Slydini but....". Well to tell you the truth I've seen a couple of amateurs who's skill was comparable to those greats! Really! Unbeknownst to them, the reason they were no McBride or Slydini was their lack of SHOWMANSHIP - just lousy when it came to establishing a connection with the audience! But they could go on and on producing this and that etc. All the skill and dexterity in the world wrapped up in those lil' hot hands and just awful when it came to CHARACTER, PERSONALITY, and most of all, GETTING THE AUDIENCE TO LIKE THEM. I'm not knockin' them as that was me in my 20's OK? I've come along since and glad to know that the learning experience continues. When it comes to personality or character, I don't refer to a mesmerizing speaker as the top silent acts are loaded with character. Within his forum, Bill Palmer writes about the importance of getting an audience to like you. I love that post and I believe it to be one of the most important posts ever here at the Café. Remember, that's one post among over 1 million to date. It can be read here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......71&1 Case in point, mother is headed back to Vegas tomorrow. She'll be there for a week to play slots, eat at the buffets, and take in a show or two. I got her a printout of the talent showing for that week and she waived it away saying "That's OK but I'm going to see Mac King". Good job Mac! I told her there was a couple of other very talented and worthwhile performers that week and she simply said "But I like Mac King and what a showman!". There was no mention of his skill or even ongoing talk about what impressed her most about him during the last visit. Actually for mother it doesn't seem to matter anymore as she just likes him. I come to the Café for specific information and direction from those with similar interests in Stage Manipulation. I've spent years practicing, am good, getting better, and now more than ever, aware of the inescapable reality that if an audience doesn't like you, it doesn't matter what you do on stage as you WILL NOT go over as well as you could - a promise, guarantee, and a threat as if a natural law. Talk about not even touching the tip of the iceberg! Now 37, this cornerstone in performance has become more important to me than ever before! I won't get into telling you who I like or dislike as magicians, but will tell you that no matter what miraculous performance they come up with, the two I dislike the most I will never appreciate, speak well of, and certainly never pay a ticket to see as I don't like them. Their disrespectful way of treating the audience (on a couple of occasions) and attack on some people's belief system (what's that got to do with a paying audience expecting to be entertained with magic?) displayed their disregard for a responsible human connection to their audience. Oh and their boisterous manner has nothing to do with showmanship as some people confuse the two. There is plenty of material (do we have enough DVDs out there?) that teach the latest miracles in a pocket effect. I can't do a search on Ebay or net without having to weed through 1001 ads that read "David Blaine tricks exposed! - Instant magician - download now!", "Learn to Levitate and 20 more tricks on DVD for just $9.99!". etc. For those who buy this sort of stuff, then what? Own and perform said miracles with no understanding and application of SHOWMANSHIP? A friend of mine's husband entertains guests with little pocket tricks in the living room. He asked me what I thought of his "act" after performing for a couple of his visiting neighbors. He brought this up while I was on the subject of showmanship within any act. You can tell this has become important to me. He agreed but insisted he was "good with an audience". After seeing him perform for me and a few of his visitors, I told him he was good at ENTERTAINING HIMSELF. Being overzealous, telling jokes, and being loud and bossy is not entirely what showmanship is about. In fact, it probably has nothing to do with it. If you've seen some of the greats, they had a knack for taking their audience on a journey and when usually closing to a standing ovation, were very much liked by the audience. An audience that probably hadn't seem him/her perform before and certainly didn't know personally. But they came away liking THAT performer. In the area of magical entertainment, Blackstone and Henning come to mind. Hell! Who couldn't like those two!? I never heard anyone who saw them live or on television say "Oh he's OK" or worse "Ugh! he really gets on my nerves" - not once - never. Although Blackstone was formerly trained as a radio announcer, with or without a great speaking voice, he was a showman alright. Compared to some of today's innovations in the Dancing Hank or Floating Bulb, Blackstone used older methods which might even be considered crude by younger generation magicians. Up against the new technology, he and others like him would still KILL using even the oldest methods as they'd be coupled with their awesome exercise in showmanship. I think Slydini might of referenced this difference when he asked a young man if he was a real magician or if he "just did tricks." You and I both do the Dancing Hank. When I perform or practice this beauty I always wonder what Blackstone would have to say about my version. Am I exercising showmanship, bringing life and character to that handkerchief, is the effect and performer liked? For my sake, it better be! So the awareness and heading continues. I just remembered another who could plug into an audience just moments after stepping on stage. You recall the magical humor of Red Skelton. This man could sit in a chair center stage gigglin', pulling his hat over his face, peek out from under it, laugh some more, and have the entire audience falling apart. What led up to that moment and happened thereafter was sheer showmanship. Not to mention his usual closing line: "If some day you're not feeling well, you should remember some little thing I have said or done and if it brings a smile to your face or a chuckle to your heart then my purpose as a clown has been fulfilled." -- Red Skelton I do remember and chuckle when I think of him. This happens not because he told a darn good joke but rather, he was a showman who happened to say or do something funny. Notice I mentioned showman before his humor. "At the end of the program, Skelton would become serious and express his gratitude to his audience for their love and laughter. His signature closing line became "Good night and may God bless." - The Museum of Broadcast Communications. "But, no matter how many times he succumbed to his giggles, took another pratfall, mugged for the camera, or made asides to the audience, his popularity only increased. " - The Museum of Broadcast Communications. I don't suggest everyone be hilarious on stage or finish the act with a serious message of thanks. I do suggest that I and my audience benefit from any dose of showmanship. The more the better. There are more than one reason or ways a crowd will like you. For the amateur or working magician the stock items, DVDs, and other materials will always be there. My love for the art and ongoing practice and improving upon my chosen effects will always be there. However, qualified works on showmanship can be hard to come by. Collectively, as magicians, our resources to grasp and use showmanship depends on the shared knowledge and experience of others. Your book would be a great primer for this topic among other important elements of performance. I've yet to acquire a book, lecture notes, PDF download file, or dare I say DVD of greater value than materials on showmanship as the phenomenon still doesn't come in a box. Excuse the ramblin' I get on a roll sometimes. Best of luck on the writing and help keep the awareness and importance of showmanship alive. |
