I personally always sign autographs after every stage show I do. I also give out my coloriung flyers or certificates to the kids and anyone who wants to receive one and spend the time autographing them. I do this for several very key reasons.
1) Often times I may be the very first magician this kid may have ever seen. I want them to remember the experience in a good way and leave seeing magicians and magic as a very cool thing. 2) I want to personally THANK my audience for coming out and watching. With so many things they could have been doing, they chose to come and see my show and without my audience I am NOTHING. So this is my way of saying thank you. 3) I get the chance to shake hands and get feedback on the show. by signing autographs after the performance , I get the chance to personally meet these foilks and ask them what they enjoyed about the show and what was their favorite part etc. This is a golden opportunity to key in and listen and really learn what your audience saw in your show. 4) Marketing. It is a great way to market yourself and keep your name fresh in their minds long after the show is over. because my coloring flyers and my certificates all have my information on them, and because they are autographed and something the child wants, there is more chance that this item will be placed on the fridge of hung up and that works for me long after I am gone. As far as what I write, that depends on the amount of people in line and also what I personally feel that day. Sometimes I will just sign my name when other times I may write, "May all your days be filled with Magic!" or "Remember that the magic is in you!" and then sign my name. Kyle

Since "Dr. Stephen Midnight" is a very long name, I usually sign my autographs, "SM" with the 'M' ending in a French curve under both letters.

I think it really does show that you appreciate your audience and that you are taking the time out to tell them that you thank them for watching the show. For this reason, I never charge for an autograph and never will. If it were not for my audience, I would be nothing. They are everything to me and this is just one simple way of letting them know that.

I also Know when I was eight years old I saw a magician /ventriloquist at a father son show and after the show not only did he give me an autograph but showed me his vent figure as well. That how I got started in this buisness. That was 41 years ago and that magician and I are still very good friends today. His name is Danny Ford of Essex, IL. So you never know what a little time at the end of a program may develope into.

Chuck is right on with this. You must always remind yourself that every performance you do may be the first time a kid has ever had the chance to see a magician. It is a big moment for them and one in which you can have control over. Make them remember it in a positive light. A simple autograph afterwards can mean so much for a child and have make a lasting and positive memory they will carry for a long time.

You have to appreciate your audience. Being asked for an autograph is an HONOUR for me. And I am HONOURED to give one. I get their name and ask for correct spelling. I thank them for bringing their MAGIC to my show, among other things. I always thank them for coming.

That is great and you have such the right attitude and idea about this. It is indeed an honor to be asked for an autograph. It is a way of saying thank you for the audience coming out and seeing you. You are showing appreciation. Plus, kids especially love receiving something from the show to remember it by. This is why I will often give out and sign my cloring flyers or certificates or 8 by 10's. These are gifts from me to them and something they can cherish and enjoy. Kyle

But let me start by saying, that of course it's only a library show, kid's birthday, etc. However it was a mere childhood birthday-party magician in that inspired me when I was in the third grade. I looked up to him, and in my eyes he was a rock star. In fact, his routine some 30 years ago, still inspires my work today. Let's however, even remove that from the equation, and just look at the kid who is requesting the autograph... it's much like when my wife does something "stupid," she then says, "I'm so stupid." I always then say to her, "Are you saying that I am the kind of person who would marry someone stupid? Don't talk about my wife that way." Anyway, the point is that when a kid asks for your autograph, it's not just something he's doing to kill time. He's doing it because he thinks highly of you... you could literally crush his hopes by telling him, in effect, that he is a poor judge of character because although he thinks the world of you, you think that it's merely a library show and it shouldn't go to your head. At the very least, you may hurt his feelings. Anyway, off the soapbox now. |

Nicely stated and I agree with you. I just personally feel that it is an honor to be asked for an autograph and I always try and make the time to give one to anyone who asks no matter if they are a kid or just a kid at heart. What I do like about what Al does is the part of him giving the child a piece of the magic to take home with them. This is very powerful as everytime they look at that star rubberband, they will recall the entire magical experience that took place with it. This creates some very powerful memories. That part I do like and think is a great idea. I personally would do both though. But keep in mind, that is just me and how I approach my magic. I like to thank my audience in various ways if I can. I design my own posters and autograph these. I have recently started making MAGICALAURIE MAGIC WANDS which I now give out as a souvenir, also.

That sounds great and is similar to some of what I do myself. If you can sign something that the kids will WANT to have, then you are doing yourself and them a buig favor. Not only are they receiving thanks from you, but they get something they want to have and will hold on to. This ultimately will get shown to the parent and may lead to more bookings down the road. I would love to see your poster if you have the time to show me. As an artist and designer, I love seeing the creativity of others. Kyle

I, unfortunately, only focused on the part of his post that I disagreed with, but I do like the idea of giving out something as part of the experience. The only drawback might be if you had a line of people wanting your autograph, you couldn't exactly show all of them the same trick. At that point, you'd have to just autograph, chit chat for a second, wish 'em luck and move to the next guy. I've only had this happen once in my life, and it was only 4 or 5 kids lined up. |

I have always had a problem with autographs. It seems to be a very strange part of this celebritocracy that we live in. The signature seems very insignificant unless there is something else that makes it significant.
I have been in people's homes and they have framed autographs from celebrities, sometimes addressed to people not even known to the present autograph owner. To me, this makes the signature, insignificant. However, if you write a letter to someone or visit them and talk with them, or actually have a real relationship with them, then their signature on a card, letter or picture has more significance. Sometimes, I have been asked for an autograph. Usually, I decline very politely and casually... often through distraction or misdirection. But on a few occassions it would be very disrespectful to not acquiesce. Then I will write the person's name and a sentiment like "Make your life as magical as you can!" or "The Magic is in Books!" When I remember I add... 793.8 Cheers - El Lamo

Billy, 793.8 refers to the Dewey Decimal system number used by US and Canadian libraries (and I assume UK libraries as well) to file and locate books on the library shelf with magic tricks as a subject matter.
El Lamo, Pretty clever idea! Mind if I use it as well? Lyndel |
