How are silks measured?
By that I mean in the standard measurments of 9", 12", 18", etc. Are they measured by the edge, as in 12" x 12"? Or are they measured by the long diagonal? I have a silk that was presented as a 9" silk; I measured it and its edges are about 8" and its diagonal is a little over 11". So what are the standard measurements for silks? |

All measurements in silks are usually the raw sizes. You can figure to lose about an 1" in each direction with hemming.

Unfortunately, even magic dealers often don't understand that silks are never measured diagonally. (Not even diamond cut silks.) Essentially they are just cloth. Cloth is measured by its edges.
Richard is correct, as usual, about the measurement being "raw" before the material is hemmed or finished. You'll find the same is true of lumber and many other materials. Always assume that the finished product will never be larger than the "raw" measurement. (Think of contracts. The large print giveth and the small print taketh away!) Enjoy your silk magic. I've never been into silk magic. Are there any videos you guys know of that I can see?

Hello RancidClone:
There are a number of silk magic videos/DVDs. One source is http://www.laflinmagic.com You can purchase the Laflin DVD catalog for $12.50. This shows you about an hours worth of silk magic. There're no explainations, just demonstrations of various silk effects. I think this DVD is very helpful for someone who's thinking about adding a silk effect or two into his act. The very best resource for someone wanting to explore magic with silks is the Rice's Encyclopedia (four volumes) of silk magic. I believe you can still get it directly from http://www.silkkingmagic.com I hope this helps you. Ron |

In addition to what Ron has recommended, P&A Silks offers a seven volume video set (each video can be purchased separately) on silk magic. Here's the link to the website:
http://www.pasilks.com/ I would also recommend Paul Diamond's vieo, Symphonette in Silk. Jimmy
