I recently had a conversation with a well known, well liked and experienced magician. The topic was content of a DVD. His take was that in order for a DVD to sell in todays market it had to contain full performance routines as well as exlanations of all the sleights and the routines themselves. My contention is that a DVD could stand on its own with just explanations of new sleights and moves without the obligatory demonstrations of full routines. Just the explanations of the how to do a move or sleight and basic ideas of where they can be used. This would leave the creation of the routines up to the user and thus leaving out the creators routines as he uses them. Any thoughts?

Mike Rubinstein has done such a project (Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights),and from the post here on the Café I think it has done well on the market.
I'm not sure that if someone was to market a set of DVDs with already published sleights (esp. if they are the moves covered in Mike's DVDs)it would do so well, but who knows, the market for things comes in phases. Myself, I like the idea of a book with a performance only DVD. Best, Joe

Charlie,
If that's the case, you might as well just put together a manuscript. Performing full routines, gives the viewer a context in which the new moves may be utilized, and can be entertaining. I personally am fond of tapes and DVDs where either the magician performs for just the camera and is extremely engaging(Dave Williamson and Guy Hollinworth for example), or have a life audience so that the home viewer can see real reactions and the magician can actually play off the audience(such as Bill Malone). The only reason I could see having a tape or DVD containing just the move would be solely as reference material. Encyclopedia of Coin Slieghts is a prime example of this thinking...... I'm not saying that this line of thinking wouldn't sell, I just the concept should definitely be entertaining........like Sankeys 45 DVD.....

For a DVD, I think it is a disservice not to have the performance of what is being taught. Seeing a magician actually perform the magic he is teaching allows you to learn a lot. Sure you can learn the moves and technical aspects by watching an explanation, but the performance is better to see how the routine is supposed to flow. Changes in tempo, the words that are used, how everything is put together. You may learn more watching how a good performer actually performs his magic than you would just learning the building blocks behind it. Two different people could learn the "moves" and have very different results performing it. Just learning moves isn't enough.
Sleights and moves are only a means to an end. The effect is that end. I personally like seeing the effect before learning the pieces that make it. I like to be entertained. The performance is entertaining. |

Has anyone ever put out a dvd or video explaing different slights for the Shell or gimmicked coin?????????
I think this would open a lot of doors to excellent routines and effects. Dan ,Perhaps you can answer this question vinny |

Vinny, your post was exactly my argument. If I were to watch a DVD with nothing but sleights and moves and basic ideas of where they could be used but without the coruption of someone elses performance I think I could come up with a performance/routine of my own and have a lot of fun doing it.
I equate this to teaching someone how to play a guitar and read & write music but letting them make up their own song. That was the foundation of my argument. |

Shell Shocked I think attempted that Vinny. Although he did offer routines.
I think, like Eric, that if you only wanted to demonstrate sleights put out a manuscript. It allows more the reader to interpret the sleight for himself instead of mimicing actions. This interpretation often leads to discovery of a new sleight or variation of the original which is good for magic. I guess this really falls into the Video versus Print debate. Asking the question is the first step in seeing if there is a need for this type of project. Assesing that need in a marketable way can be tricky though. |

David Roth put out a video on the shell and C/S coin. It got combined with a video of folding coins and other specialty gaffs video to become Ultimate Coin Magic Vol. 1 DVD.
Again, routines with sleights. The specialty gaff video was more of Roth demo'ing common gaffed coin sets. Of course most sleights for regular coins would apply fine for shells (concealments, palms, etc.) I think the things that would be specific to shells would be the techniques used to unshell a coin, shell a coin, handle the sound issue, etc... |
