If you are doing the close up traditional routines with the CSB set, I would pick half dollar size or smaller. The dollar size coins because of their size make the gimmick more noticable if they can glimpse the edge of the gaff.
I only use the dollar size coins for stuff held at the fingertips with some distance - Like the spellbound routines I have done with them. (King Midas Spellbound, Molecular Spellbound) etc. |

Very soon, Porper will have this kind of routine in casino poker chips.

Coins smaller than a half dollar can be difficult to manipulate. So gaffs make magic with the smaller coins possible and reliable.
Coins smaller than a half can still be borrowed. If the coins are borrowed, the liklihood of a spectator guessing that the cions are somehow "special" is far lessened. Gaffs are therefore more invisible when used with smaller coins. Two good reasons to get a C/S/B set in common pocket change. I know Todd makes a set. I wonder if a quarter/Susan B. Anthony/Gold Dollar set can be made. I had all of these coins in my pocket about a month ago, after buying stamps at the post office vending machne.

Curtis,
Interesting thought, but here in CA, no one uses the dollar coins of any type except as a novelty and or brief accident as you experienced. Therefore, I think they call as much, if not more, attention to themselves as unique props. I mean props are props, but these are wierd props. At least there is some numismatist(sp) value to the others. Kirk |

Kirk,
I think it's enough that the coins look like change they recognise, and you can borrow some of them, or even just the quarter. I don't think a complete s/b/c set can be assembled from familiar pocket change, and I don't want to bother doing a "2 Copper 1 Silver" with dimes and pennies. Still, a gaff that poses as something ordinary is more likely to go undetected than a gaff that poses as something unusual. The Susan B's and Gold Dollars are slightly novel, but old news at this point. At least, that's the feeling I get here in the middle of the Pacific.

If you ride the light rail here in Houston, you recieve dollar coins for change.
Most people are eager to give them away, trade for a paper bill. |

The dollarsize needs more work to palm/switch etc. But they are visually superior.
I have a set from Todd where the gaff even sounds good. No tinny sounds like the half-dollar versions.

I did the transposition ala CSB, but with the Porper-made poker chip set Saturday for a lunch party in Malibu (what a place) and the gasps of "NO WAY" etc. etc. were more than slightly gratifying. This set really plays as the fols there had poker chips and dice cups around and were into watching the big Poker tournaments on TV.
Is now my favorite close up item.

I just returned from Joe Porper's shop. I came away with a set of the poker chips for the routine. They are simply GREAT!
With all the attention given to the world of poker today, this is a perfect lead-in. Porper rules! Regards, Paul Green |

Is the poker chip "C/S/B" availble for purchase online? Or just in that shop in CA?
