The reason I ask is because for the magic finale I was going to produce a stuffed animal for the birthday child to keep Hi Magic4ewe, The reason I do it this way is because the puppet routine is sooooo strong. I get asked so many times during the show 'When's Dusty (puppet) coming out?' The kids talk about the rabbit constantly with their friends. If you're going to use live rabbits, they will be FANTASTIC to end with. Many years ago I used to use live rabbits, and they are a very strong point in the show, so to finish on them will be a huge success. The one thing I would suggest though, is avoid giving the rabbit out to the birthday child to keep. Two reasons for this, 1) The parents might not want their child having a rabbit as a pet, I realise you'll ask them first. But 2) If you do a party, and the birthday child has seen you before, they will be really excited about the rabbit part, but if that childs parents said no, the birthday child will be very upset. Something to think about. Best wishes, Billy |

Duh!!! Sorry Magic4ewe, I've just re-read your post, and didn't notice the word 'Stuffed' animal. Are you thinking of giving away the stuffed animal, or a real rabbit as you mentioned at the end of your post?

Sorry I didn't answer you question before. To be honest, when I posed the question to begin with I just meant in generality, but your statements actually raised some good points. As I think about it, I guess in the beginning I pretty much meant comedy throughout all the routines throughout the show. The more I have been thinking about what I am actually trying develop, I believe that I will have humor throughout, with bits of stronger comedy here and there, but at a comfort level appropriate for the type of personality I have. Again, I really like the way that Billy approached his video. It was funny, but comfortable. I can see myself in that type situation and behaving similiarly. To me watching the video, it was just a "natural" interaction with the childen. Billy: LOL...that did sound a bit confusing didn't it?! No, I plan on giving a stuffed animal. In my head it sounded right because I know how I am developing the storyline, but since I hadn't clued you into the storyline of how my "rabbit comes alive" it didn't make a lot of sense. In the beginning I had thought to use my two guinea pigs in the show (it would have been really cute because they are the same color with the same markings...could have done a lot with that!), but I am starting to shy away from that. I think that they are just too timid and I couldn't bring myself to stress them out. Again, thank you everyone. Your thoughts on the subject truly are appreciated as I work to develop a routine and stage presence. This will be a very slow process for me as I learn to put this show together, but as previously stated, I am under no deadline and time is on my side. I am sure I will have lots of questions along the way and appreciate your patience and advice. ~ Magic4ewe |

Magic4ewe...I just watched Trixi Bond's birthday party show at KIDabra. She was kind enough to demonstrate the skills that have made her one of the highest paid children's entertainers in Texas and an international star...in my opinion. She plays a "Mary Poppins" type of character and relies quite heavily on "real" magic and the "in-control" nanny image...rather than comedy. Sounds to me that you're working along the same lines as Ms. Bond...a technique that she has certainly masterd.

Clarification
I never sugggested to use pie in the face humor to entertain children, I said you must be a fun woman, and quite honestly if you don't understand how to have fun with a room full of kids perhaps you are not suited for childrens entertainment. This is not rocket science Al

Thanks Skip for the information and suggestion! I will have to do a google search on Trixi to see what I come up with.
I always appreciate helpful suggestions and ideas! In fact, I keep a notebook where I write down all the ones I like so I can refer back to them while I try and put things together. Again, thanks for the addition to my "brainstorming" notebook! |

Hi Magic4ewe,
I second what Billy said! From what I've observed and read in your post and speaking to you in pm, you are to be commended for going about this the right way! How refreshing! You've joined SAM, you're rehersing your material and fine tuning it , you take the opportunity to work out the bits you have worked on with an audience at your daughters camp. You've developed a rapport with the kids and that's so important and you genuinely like them. I see a bright future and have no doubt you'll be a very good children's entertainer. Best of Luck to you!!! Chrystal |

Thanks Chrystal for the encouragement! I really appreciate the well wishes and sentiment! It is very welcome indeed! I never asked, but do you have a website? If so, I would love it if you would PM the link!
Skip, wanted to let you know that I checked out Trixi's website. Really nice. I enjoyed reading the article in the magazine about her. I found it very interesting and appreciate the tip! I really enjoyed reading the article, especially since it talked about being a female magician. |

My magic friend told me the other day that at the circus he saw a family that rehearsed the trapeze for 20 years , 10 hours a day. All the way home all the kids talked about was the clown losing his pants. Does that tell you how important comedy is ?

Magic4ewe...most welcome. May I suggest that you consider joining a KIDabra chapter near you...and arrange to have Trixie come to lecture. KIDabra is focused on up-&-coming children & family entertainers...like us. You can also try emailing Trixie for advice. She is a wonderful and caring individual. A copy of her party lecture notes from last week's KIDabra conference would help you ALOT! You'll love her.
Best wishes and may success be your constant companion! :o) Skip

Again, I just really want to thank you for all of the support I have received. Everyone has been great about helping this apprentice! The kind PMs I have received have truly boosted my spirits when I needed encouragement the most!!! So a special thank you goes out to those individuals as well.
I have set some goals for myself. The main one is to have a show put together a year from now by next summer. Some may say that this is too short a time frame, while others may say it is too long. I just really want to make sure whatever I come up with is done right. I may adjust my time frame to a longer time period, but not a shorter one. I think that practice and knowing your performance is of vital importance. I also feel that being overly-prepared will help a newbie like me overcome my own natural jitters. At least the one thing I won't have to worry about the first time I perform is knowing my routine. This will also give me plenty of time to continue attending our SYM meetings with our daughter, and my SAM meetings. I will be able to network with those already in the business, and learn from their experiences. I will also have a year to study other performances. See what I like, watch reactions from the kids to see what they like, and to learn. Again, thank you everyone. I hope to continue to learn from all of you as well. |

What a great thread!
School started yesterday. I hope to get some new stories from my work with middle and high school kids. I used to save my puppets till the end of the show. These days I use them toward the beginning and the end. My voice is stronger at the beginning and over the years I have added more puppets to my program. Some use vent and some don't. My two latest involve a shoulder dragon, a tennis ball, two rolls of toilet paper and a 260 balloon. (Not all the same puppet.) Again thanks for the great thread. Isn't it wonderful, that we don't all have to be alike. Humor is a wonderful thing. So is drama and other emotions. In a program last week, I shared the podium with our district attorney. You may have seen him on U.S.A. T.V. 60 Minutes. He talked about our counties relatively new law about adults hosting alcohol parties for teens. Although Nigel, the puppet that rocks and talks has his lighter side, he also now talks about his older brothers poor choices and their consequences. Next month I will be sharing with "big kids" at a conference on Alcoholism. My topic: Humor for the Helping Professional. Harris Deutsch Laughologist

I personally don't think that a kids or family performer needs to have comedy in every routine. But I think that it is an important element in a kids and family show, and should be in some routines. Comedy doesn't need to be there at every moment, for there to be an attitude of fun and magic. A performer can vary their pace and content, and still click with their audience. I have some routines in my family shows that are just magical / mysterious / amazing, perhaps performed to music or with a touch of storytelling. (I have heard this idea labeled "The WOW! Factor.") And certain kids rave about those routines being their favorite part of the show, while others rave about certain funny parts of other routines. - Donald

Thanks for the follow-up Donald. Sometimes when I pose my questions, since I am so new at this, I don't always think through the whole question until someone such as yourself points out the differences. So I appreciate your taking the time to do so because it allows me to reflect more thoroughly as to what I really do mean!!
This whole idea is an exciting prospect for me, and at times majorly overwhelming, but I know that by taking my time and going slow that eventually I will come up with what I hope to be a fun-filled routine for both the kids and myself. Thanks again!! |

Saying that being a funny magician makes you clown is one of the most simplistic and utterly ridiculous arguments I've every seen on these boards. The kids MUST laugh, and if you really want to clinch the repeat business, get the parents laughing too. You don't have to act like a clown, you're not a clown, you're a children's magician...and a funny one at that! ;) |
