Cheap waiter's stands are available on ebay, but check the shipping cost as it might be cheaper to buy one at a restaurant supply store as others have suggested. I, too, bought one at such a supply store for around $30.

Go to a large music store and buy a cheap X frame keyboard stand if you cant find a waiters stand.

I put grommets on the straps in three places to make the table height adjustable and will drill pegs into the one side to hook them onto. A little velcro in the right places to hold the around and back to themselves to eliminate them from dangling loose.

I posted last a while ago about an inexpensive table I was able to put together. If you'd like to take a look, the details are here:
http://www.jacobgrier.com/magicblog/archives/000246.html I recently got one of Tabman's tables, too, and have been very happy with it. I plan on posting about it in the near future. |

Wordwrap killed the link. Paste both lines together in your browser's address box and you should be fine.
Or, just click here to go to his page.

Is it correct to say that if you are not "handy" enough to make your own table (and other props) you probably don't have "the right stuff" to perform in the street in the first place? ;-)

No. That is not correct.
I don't think you need to be too handy. Just interested in doing a good job and putting forth the effort. Some are more interested in perfecting their magic and leaving the prop-making to someone else. I personally think everybody should try making their own stuff to see how it goes. Might give them some ideas. It might also work out just right. They might realize they're better off buying something.

Greetings and Salutations,
I think you hit it on the head, Frank. Give it a try if you are so inclined but know your limitations. I've got four tops around -- one's for practice, one is a backup-back-up, the first I gave to my nephew who's just getting started, and the fourth, and the last one is pretty good, so I know the fifth one will be my keeper and principal top. I use a tall tray jack stand, but am looking at a keyboard stand as well, for the legs. (I'm not even going to take a stab at constructing those!) I'm thinking given what I've spent, or will spend in total on the five tops I could have purchased a top but I had some fun, learned a few things, and have three tops I can experiment on to come up with a good sign for the "back" of my table top ala Cellini/Gazzo advertiser. Just my $.02 (USD) worth. YMMV Joe in KC PS. Frank, Tabman and SFS make awesome looking table tops! |

I made my own and used it for about 6 months or so.
I boycotted my own table when I got my photo in the paper with my own table. I now have that one of my best friend makes. he makes all my tables. Why? because he wants to do wood work and did a damm fine job on mine. And I don't have the patience for making a great one. I still use my original one to hold props for my stand-up shows back stage. It probably takes him longer than others to do them since they're done one at a time but he's selling them all over the world now. Wow! Puts a smile on my face and earns him a few bucks to get more material for more tables. Apparently a few burgundy table tops are about to be finished. I hope I get one. If you can make your own stuff, make it, and use it.

Here is a prototype I just completed:
I will be using a keyboard stand, because it allows for varying heights. The table top can also sit on a regular table. Am going to add a huge magnet under table, and slots to steal cards and coins from. This one is made of walnut and made like a casino blackjack table in that the border part can be removed quickly to replace the felt. Next version will clean up the screws in the rear of the table. I will add a servant, but don't want it to be noticable. Probably conceal it on the leading edge of a small drawer, allowing it to be concealed under table when not in use. Smooth edge on rear of table will allow.....[you know what] Drawback I see right now is the weight. It is made of solid walnut, carefully grain matched, 1 1/2 in thick at the sides. But it is incredibly sturdy Click for pictures of prototype http://www.dancingbearakitas.com/auction......able.htm Comments appreciated. I might make a few more if there is interest. It is pretty time intensive, and the materials are not cheap (1/4 inch neoprene under the felt, ect). This one is walnut. I can make cherry and oak as well. I wanted a large area to allow for card spreads which are not cramped onto a closeup pad, as well as the ability to mix the cards on the table like in vegas. |

You can find instructions for building your own table in Cellini's book, "The Royal Touch" I would definitely recommend doing that. I think you can also buy a Cellini table from Horbi Kull at http://www.zauberladen.com but they are expensive and based out of Zurich, Switzerland. If I may make one more recommendation think carefully about combining your cut and restored/professor's nightmare rope routine. I used to do that combination routine but found that it was alittle long for the majority of my crowds and decided to drop the professor's nightmare part of the routine. Everyone's crowds are different but that's just what worked best for me.

The zauberladen table is not hieght adjustable, the scoundrels table is.
For a working / travel set up I use the Starsini top on a keyboard stand bottom (The Starsini top is the lightest I have found). |
