Anyone know routines for the china town half that can be done in the hands without a table for a pure strolling situation? Thanks.
Jim

If you've got a ***ll for it, Sankey has a nice 'one' coin interlude on his Rev Coin DVD.

If you can skip using that particular gaff and go with the Vernon thing using the ], then you may as well use the Kaps handling from his lecture and use any pretty removal sleight to end with two examinable coins.
If you introduce a playing card or your business card, you can use that as cover and let a simple spellbound change manage the work in your hands. Or you can use the modified gaff and do the Kaps handling directly and let them see the hole in the coin they remove. Okay, those are three options. I'm sure other folks have more.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

The gaffed coin effect called China Change with a flesh colored gimmick is very good and is a nice lead in to other effects with the Chinese Coin. (This takes advantage of the Chinatown Half-type of gimmick.)

Try that change that Corey Burke does in his Payphone DVD. He talks about producing 3 coins in his Tri-clops effect, the third coin is the wrong kind (chinese, copper, or whatever) and he muscle passes it up to join a fan. And as the coin hits the other two, it changes into the US coin. Very cool idea. :

Richard Kaufman's book Coinmagic has an excellent effect using the Chinatown half and a string. It's all done standing up with no table needed.

Our very own Mike Wild has a great effect for the Chinatown Half in his Tavern Magic #1 manuscript. It happens completely in the hands (yours and the spectator's), it's ridiculously easy to perform, and it packs a real whallop. Check it out. http://www.sundragonmagic.com/tavmag.htm
(And no, I do not have a "vested interest" in Mike or his material. I just enjoy it and wanted to share.) |

I have China Change. It's good and very hard to detect, but quite short. I agree that it really needs to be a lead-in to someting like C/S/B or another effect using the chinese coin, because as a stand-alone effect, it's too quick and doesn't pack enough of a wallop.

I just re-checked my coins. "China Change" is a Sterling effect. My C/S/B is Johnson. The chinese coin is similar but not identical, so you can't go right into C/S/B using that coin (unless Johnson makes a China Change). I have Johnson "Hong Kong Coin" and that one is identical to the one in C/S/B, so I have used it as a transition. For example, I'll do scotch and soda (half and centavo), then Hong Kong Coin (emporer coin), then I start off C/S/B using the three coins from those two previous illusions. I usually swap the S&S half for a non-gimmicked one during the first move, but you could actually perform the entire C/S/B effect with the S&S wherever the ungimmicked half is called for (just makes me nervous, though).

It should be easy enough to fabricate yourself a China Change that uses a Johnson Chinese coin.

I enjoy Reed McClintock's International 3-Fly, found on his DVD Coin Ovations.

By adding that little something special to my Johnson Hopping Half exp. ], I can then use my Johnson Hong Kong Coin with exp ] for the chinese coin. That way China Change can go right into Hong Kong Coin which can then tranistion into C/S/B.

Crap... I just tried it out and Hong Kong Coin ] doesn't fit! Oh well, at least I can make a "Johnson" China Change and use that Chinese coin for C/S/B
