It's great to be a part of this forum where we can respectfully disagree with each other. One would expect different interpretations of what is ethical and what is not.
I stated in an earlier post that I believe we are making this complex topic more complex then it needs to be, by confusing ethical with legal issues. In my personal moral code, they are separate, and may even be contradictory. Think about Rosa Parks, the first black woman who insisted on sitting in the front section of the bus. Did she break the law? You bet! Was her act a moral one? Sure was! Certainly we won't all agree on that one. Let's face it, no one has a monopoly on the truth or on morality. In the Taliban world, many behaviors are decreed to be immoral which most of us condone. They can surely cite chapter and verse to support their dogma. Fact is, they - or you and I - can find chapter and verse to support just about anything! In the end, we've got to look at ourselves in the mirror and feel good (or bad) about what we do. Part of my morality is to tell people when I think they're making a mistake. I'm not condemning anyone, and I'm open to someone having a different sense of morality. I believe it's wrong to bootleg someone's video. Have I ever done it, or been the recipient of someone's bootleg? Yes I have. Do I intend to do it again? No. Am I better or more moral than anyone else? No, just putting in my 2 cents. Bob Taxin |

You can go on about ethics, morals, or laws all you want; what was brought up was none of those.
It's time to move on. Tom Cutts, Moderator That's a big hint! |

Bob, excellent analogy. Thanks for sharing that. As a footnote, since our discussion has also included the topic of copyright laws, there has been an ongoing debate regarding the ethic of these laws. The rights granted under the recent revision of copyright laws have, at times, come into conflict with those granted by the Constitution; freedom of speech, freedom of the press.
The estate of Martin Luther King Jr. sued CBS Inc for their use of Dr King’s "I have a dream" speech. They lost. The speech was ruled to be public domain. And on the subject of copyrighting magic, I think Phillips wisdom should not slip us by: Quote:

One needs to know what is copyrightable and what is not. Then the answer is crystal clear...and belongs in another topic.
This one has run its course. |

This has indeed been an interesting topic, but does not seem to be very productive.
About the only thing that we all seem to agree on is everyone has a different view on what is right or wrong, regardless of the laws that may govern the area they live in. Do I agree with every law that is passed? No, I do not. I myself resent having to wear a seat-belt while driving, despite the fact it's suppose to help keep me safe. Do I wear one? Yes I do, I hate sending checks and not getting anything in return. Everyone here has made what I believe to be some very valid points, from their point of view. Do I agee with them all? No, of course I don't. Using Christof's view on things, if my local bank does not loan me the money to buy my new home, I'll simply take the money anyway, and pay it back when I am able. After all, I deserve a home, right? Why should I let some dumb rules and regulations stand in my way? But of course, my personal ethics, upbringing and religious beliefs will not allow me to engage in that sort of thing...even if I lived in a country where the law said; "Stealing is legal" As far as copyrights, patents, and trademarks are concerned, I'll leave that to the courts to decide. I will, in the meantime, use my own personal ethics to lead me in what I hope to be an honest and respectful direction. This is indeed a big world we live in, and unfortunately there are many others living here who's ethics and morals do not have a very high standard, from of course, my point of view. But thankfully, most of these folks end up in prison, or with very few friends. All of us make choices in our lives each and every day, in or out of magic circles. My hope is that each of you will make the choice that you and other's can happily live with. God bless.......
