If buying the Bazar cups at least try to get to a shop where you might check the exact set of cups because of the inconsistancy. Read the article from the Riser link above and try to maximize the goals he suggests. Among them the set that seats the best and does not rock.

I completely agree that there's a false economy in buying cheap cups. It's also less pleasurable to practice if they don't look good and are not nice to handle.
In an ideal world it would be better to get to a shop and handle some cups, but as has been discussed elsewhere, bricks & mortar shops are on the decline - and not all shops are likely to stock the whole range of cups. I think recommendations from people who already own sets should be a reasonable subsitute. Richard

The problem with instantly buying a good set of cups (which will cost more than $200, generally), is that how does the buyer know if he/she even likes the trick, or will be able to at it to their show? rikbrooks, it seems like you knew you wanted to get a cups and balls routine into your show, and yet you made a very gradual increase in the quality of the cups.
Also, I know that if I started the cups and balls world with a set of sherwoods, I would have totally messed them up, and not have taken good care of them. Then, I would really need to get another set of good cups later on, and that would be yet another $275. I think it is like a car, don't buy a great ( and pricey) car first, during your learning how to drive and care for your car stage. Buy some cheap, durable, reliable car, then, when you know what's going on, get something nice. I suggest, again, buy some uday cups, handle them for a year or so, make sure this is something you want to invest in, and then go for a good set of cups, like johnson, gary animal, gazzo, sherwood, James riser...

I think the Bazar copper cups are fine to start with - they're not what I was referring to. By 'cheap' I was referring to plastic cups or the low-end aluminium cups.

Let me point out a few things about cups in general. A lot of people are looking for a set of cups with absolutely NO wobble in them when they are stacked. This is not only unrealistic, it probably won't work. If you have no play at all in the cups, they can "lock" on you. I have seven sets of genuine PF/DD cups. All of them have a significant amount of wobble. But it doesn't drive me to distraction. I accept it.
Likewise, the Sherwoods have some wobble. It's not a great amount, but it keeps them from locking together. I found some interesting cups on eBay. They are available from D. Robbins. They are available in brass or copper. They are 3 inches in diameter and 4 inches tall. "Lovetoshopandsave" is the seller ID for these cups. They will cost about $55 per set, I think. Remember, it's an auction so YMMV. The bazar cups (brass) weigh about 4.4 oz each. These larger cups weigh 3.9 oz each. They aren't heavyweights, but they will work.

My Mom recently found in her attic my plastic blue cups from my Sneakey Pete Magic Show. They're about 42 years old. No dents or scratches and they nest perfectly.

Actually, so do mine, as well as the Adams plastic cups and the Fun, Inc. Magic cups. Those are a diferent kettle of fish, though. It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to achieve that exact shape by spinning metal.

A friend just gave me my first set of cups and balls and they are just as Larry and Bill are describing above. Plastic with fuzzballs. I never thought I would like cups and balls much, but I'm having a lot of fun with them. I just took them and read the instructions included and did it like that. I also got the rub a dub patter and some video of Michael Skinner doing the cups and balls with the rub a dub. I'm hoping to perform it for my neices very soon. I love it!!
I might be in the market for some "real" cups and balls soon, but if you've never done any C&B... These are a fun way to get your feet wet. Skinner himself liked the little plastic "flower pots" for the rub a dub dub presentation.

I should add this: the first set of Mini Paul Fox cups that Mike Brazill had spun for him locked up just like this. He had to adjust the shape of the metal form very slightly to make them work.
As far as wobble is concerned, the Bertram style cups are generally pretty loose. This includes the Bertram cups, the Miller cups and the Phoenix cups. The loosest of all are the El Duco golden cups.

I recently picked up a set of Phoenix Cups on Ebay, and I was surprised to see that the nesting was about perfect. Couldn't have asked for more. As has been stated, it varies not only from manufacturer to manufacturer, but at times from set to set.

My Phoenix wobble all over the place, but it adds to the charm. But they will stick when you slam one on top of the other, like I do sometimes with those tanks.

OK, now to throw a monkey wrench into the thread...
One of the best cups and balls routines you will see, currently being done, is Bruce Cervon's. What cups? Plain, white, ungimmicked coffee mugs. Then there is the funniest routine extant... Bob Read's. One magic shop cup (classic shape), one coffee mug and one paper cup. Goes to show you.

If you remember the issue of Genii that featured Bob Read, you will remember he talks about going to a venue, grabbing three teacups and some bread, then making balls from the bread and doing c & b with that. You can do the Vernon routine from Stars of Magic with ordinary teacups.

Let's try to sum this up here. There are several people that feel that starting off with the cheap plastic ones is quite the thing to do. I disagree with them but there won't be much of a waste there. The problem is that you won't get the real feel for the cups with those lightweight plastics.
A second group of people claim that you should start with a good intermediate set. I belong to this group. My advice is, once again, start with the Laurie Ireland cups from Bill's site and then, if your interest warrants it, move on to the top ends one day. Although Sherewoods are beautiful I don't see myself ever buying a set. |

Just wanted to add I'm also very pleased with the Laurie Ireland copper cups I purchased from Bill. Well worth the money especially since Bill gives you a lot of "extras" in the box that should help a beginner get started.

I appreciate the support of the Ireland cups. I don't have but a couple of sets left and they are spoken for.
Magic Inc. may have some of the copper ones left. I may have some more of them spun after the first of the year. I don't want to be stuck with a big inventory of cups when the city and county run my business taxes.

What a great thread with TONS of info!
I, too, am looking to start down the road of C&B's...I've learned several basic routines from the guys I work with at the shops and am now longing for my own set of quality Cups....I'm probably going to go with the Ireland line... I'm still working out a neat, unique final load...When the thought finishes cooking I'll post it. Thanks again! Prof. Piper :juggle:

Call them to make sure they have the copper cups in stock. I only have a couple of sets left, and they are spoken for. Magic, Inc. doesn't push them very hard.
The difference in the sets I sell and the sets they sell is that mine come with a lot of accessories. When you purchase theirs, you get the cups and the balls.
