For the people who do close up and/or strolling mentalism, what do you perform? The truth is that there is very little close up mentalism out there (and the stuff that is out there, isn't that good) For the people who perform 2-4 hrs of close up mentalism in corporate or private event settings, what do you guys do? I have a killer stage show but I have very few close up material, any suggestions for sources to get good close up stuff?

I'll put my opinion even though I have not performed very much mentalism strolling ( kinda new to the genre)I'd say many effects can be done as long as you have some kind of table space to put thing down on but think of a substitute for a table... The spectators hands. This does not only make many effects possible but often it strengthes the effect. As long as you can but things down you can do billet work with perdictions etc. Packet card effects such as twisted sisters or b'wave works fine.
Also, use the floor or the ground. I've seen performers do this and it really works well. For material on close up mentalism I think soome of osterlinds stuff is good and also a book put out called mobile mentalism. //Christian |

Hi,
Ive never liked strolling mentalism its not as fast paced or as visual as magic, but saying that it can be done. Keep things moving and as visual as possable something like a quick prediction, some spoon bending, a quick watch effect and mabye some kind of coin in hand routien (eye to eye) with a wager. For my self it never had the same kind of impact as close up magic had but that might be just me:) Darren |

Osterlinds P.C.T. is great. Swami. A few effects with cards. Anything with a stack works. I will predict the serial # in an envelope every once in a while. Basic Equivoque works. Throw in some cold reading. Spoon bending off coarse, but I feel this gets a little over done. You can mix in some magic effects and play a mental story on them. The new Deep Astonishment II is great. Book tests work very well close up. Stuart

Uh, magicman02, I don't know where you've been looking but there is a ton of good close up mentalism out there. A lot of Osterlind's stuff can be done close up: I do the Watch Routine all the time. And there are countless things you can do with his Breakthrough Card System.
Also, Richard Busch has a ton of good ideas in his book "Peek Performances" which can be done close up. Learn some good peeks and center tears and the possibilities are endless. I just carry around a stack of blank business cards and I can do a whole act with them.

This ‘n’ That – Banachek, its on this Psi DVDs.
Swami stuff, think of a letter or an X digit number. Another Banachek one, Number Reversal available in Psychological Subtleties, Psi DVDs and Richard Busch’s Number Please. However if they are a bit drunk or not really interested the last thing they want to do is a bit of math. Card stuff also works well…… for me at least. Opening with the line, “Do you play cards at all?†and working form there, showing how useful your mental abilities would be during a gambling game, and then how they them self, naturally have these abilities just waiting to be explored e.g. Verbal Card Force disguised as them intuiting the next card dealt or Osterlind’s BCS effect Cards in pockets. If you have got there attention and there ‘in to it’ close with a nice, simple, clean word prediction or mind read a name of someone they haven’t thought about in years, there first kiss, an old school friend. Or even Nyman’s Magician’s Graphology or just a simple Drawing Duep. On its own. If you bend spoons, that’s nice and visual. You may also want to think about investing in some kind of utility prop, for example a S.U.C. if you work a lot with Business Cards or gimmicking a note pad you use a lot….. or something as it makes your job a lot easier and cleaner and more direct, which is what you want during a close-up gig, well at least I do.

Your book sounds very interesting. Do you know if any reviews have been posted on the web yet?
Thanks, Elliott |

Mark Strivings -Mobile Mentalism,
has routines by Docc Hillford,Richard Webster,Terry Nosek(Dr. Sigmund Fraud), Mark himself, as well as others. There is also a complete table side mental act by John Riggs. I would highly recommend this book! As for me,I do some effects with the S.U.C & some mentalism with cards. It's not really my thing, but I will do some coin or spoon bends sometimes. I also will do some P.K. effects with I.T. I know it sounds bad, but I usually wing it depending on the spectators. I don't have too much of a set routine. I do a lot of walk around, I just work with what I have in my pockets(whatever it may be that day). Ichazod |

Inside Out and Peek Performances are both great books for ideas and a good place to start. Cassidy's stuff is a great read and gets right to the point a lot depends on your style.

Magic Dog, thanks for the Inside Out mention. Elliot, there have been no reviews of my book on the Café todate. It has received excellent reviews else where, MUM and Genii Magazines to name two. Close up and walk around mentalism make up the bulk of my performance work. I had the pleasure of sitting in on the "Mentalism in unusual venues" discusson pannel at MindVention last year. Lots of great ideas were brought out there. I highly reccomentd attending this years.
