Any thoughts on who makes a really good doll's house? I just looked through Magic Auction and found only a couple of things. Thanks.

I like the Owen's because of the drop down sides. I think a lot of it has to do with the decor of the prop. I have seen some really nice ones built that looked like Swiss Chalets. I think Bill Smith built it for Harry Blackstone.

Many of the top builders have their own designs. I do like the Owen Candy Cane Doll House mentioned above also. They can also supply great workshop plans for this unit.

There is also the Loomis House which is amazingly tiny. Also the new Paul Osborne Classic Illusions Vol 1 book contains a few plans for different types of doll houses, including the candy house and oriental house which both fall away ala blammo. Also a model that is barely 2 feet tall, that uses a rarely-used method of concealment.

The best I have seen are built by Ken McCreedy. He is a new member here, just pm him. Awesome work. You will be glad you got him to build you one.
All the best, John |

We have one we built off of the Thayer design, if you pm me I will share the pictures it has lap siding, brick, foundation and individual shake shingles, it is a beautiful piece that's gotten a lot of praise from folks both in and outside the magic community. We built it to look just like a doll house a girl would have for a doll in her play room.

Thanks, all, and a PM's on the way to magicmanrob.
I mentioned this to him, but I'll mention it here too. I'm doing some research to see if an idea I came up with has been used before. It was all just a quick thought when I did the original post, but I've been thinking about it ever since and it's time to look around. Thanks again.

The DVD Workshop plans for the Loomis Doll House are about to go to the replicators. Look for a release in May and a full page ad in the May issue of MAGIC. The workshop drawings will be on the disk in PDF format so that you can print them out on your computer. The DVD will have performances of the Doll House, a full, illustrated discussion of the deceptive elements, and a lot more. I'll show the Loomis Sword Temple as well, and there's a full description of the Horse Production Illusion I built which incorporates some design elements from the Loomis Doll House and some new ones.
There will also be a discussion of the Sword Basket illusion, historical background and lots of general information on building, packing, performing, and designing stage illusions. I sold thousands of the printed version of the plans back in the 70's and 80's but they have been off the market for a long time. The new edition, on DVD, allows me to include a LOT more information and the price is lower! Let's hear it for technology. By the way, the other Doll House design mentioned above is the Don Rose version of the Doll House. It's seldom seem, but quite effective. Doug Henning had a special version with improvements by Jim Steinmeyer. He performed it on the Tonight show. Dennis Loomis

Just giving an idea. I don't know if anyone ever built this or not, but I combined the doll house and the palanquin from Paul Osborne and it's a very good combination.

Vince Carmen told me once that he thought the Loomis Dolls house was very, very deceptive, so I look foward to seeing the release.

Thanks, guys. I have stayed away from preorders in the past, especially when the project was in the early stages. I've learned that most projections about when something will be finished end up being wrong.
However, at this stage we expect that the finished product is going to be available during May. We're shooting for May 1. The distributors are in place and dealers will be able to get these from Murphy's Magic Supplies in Sacramento and Fun, Inc. in Chicago. I thank Tim Trono at Murphy's and Graham Putnam at Fun for their support. I will be posting information on my web site today. There will be a "preview" of the full page ad which will appear in MAGIC magazine. The pricing will be there. (I'm not supposed to put that on the Café, of course. But I will say this, the cost of the DVD version will be five bucks less than the printed plans were back in the 80's. And, there will be much more information.) I will think carefully about pre-orders. If I do it, you must understand that the first 1000 copies have not yet been replicated. We are, to some extent, at the mercy of the replicators. Things have been known to go wrong at this stage. We don't anticipate that, but don't want to promise with absolute certainty something which is out of our control. The link to my web site is below. On the front page there will be a link to the Doll House DVD page. Dennis Loomis To Lou Hilario, The Doll House which Doug Henning used late in his career was not the Loomis Doll House. It was Jim Steinmeyer's brilliant reworking of the Don Rose Style of Doll House. The Loomis Doll House is my reworking of the original Frederick Culpitt illusion. Most builders of that illusion made design errors which detracted from it's effectiveness. Even the ones available today are not as deceptive as they can and should be. In the late 60s I went into a phase of deep study of stage illusion design and focused on the Doll House as my first project. The result was endorsed and praised by Doug Henning, David Copperfield, Karrell Fox, Dick Oslund, Ormond McGill, Pete Biro, John Gaughan, Vince Carmen, and many more. This DVD is far more than a simple set of plans for building that illusion. I discuss at length all of the design considerations that went into producing it, and then show how those designs were incorporated into my Sword Temple and my Horse Production Illusion. This information on the Horse Production has been kept under wraps for a long time. I am finally releasing it as a part of this project. The concepts start with some of my work on the Doll House, but take it further. These concepts are not limited to these particular illusions, but could be applied to any number of illusions where you wish to produce either people, livestock, or other objects. As soon as these are available I will make review copies available to established reviewers in our community. Soon you will be able to read what more objective sources have to say. My expectation is that Bill Palmer will review it for the Café and possibly for M.U.M.
