We finished the video shoot on Saturday for Pauls new DVD on The Side Steal and although it started out on a bad foot with someone showing up an hour late to let us into our location, we manage to get it all in in the time alotted.
Let me say that Paul is a gentleman and a professional and was a joy to work with. His explanations of ther routines and the Side Steal where in such a way that everyone will have no problems understanding the mechanics behind the side steal. I hope everyone gets as much a kick out of this DVD as I did in making it! Check Pauls site at http://www.fasdiu.com for more news on when it will be available. Jeff Pierce P.S. Probably 6-8 weeks until it is available.

I saw Paul at the Midwest Magic Jubilee and he mentioned this was ready to come out. Anyone interested in a classic sleight such as the side-steal should get this DVD. He has a great technique with it!

How_Soon_Is_Now,
Not on this DVD but Paul briefly goes over the cull on his first DVD "Up in Smoke" during the explanation for the bonus card routine "Another Sequestered Travellers." He does though teach Bill Simon's "Top Card Cover for ther Side Steal" which I predict right now will end up in everyones Ambitious Card Routine. Killer Move! Jeff Pierce

Hi all,
I bought this dvd from Paul at the last GEt-Together. One word: buy it. Ok that's two words but you get the message. All the little details that makes the steal works is in there. Paul is a fabulous teacher! Moreso you get to see about five tricks from his repetoire that uses the side steal. Don't walk, run to get this dvd. Ok Paul now you can send me tha cash. ;-). Yves |

I've never posted a review here before, but considering that nobody else has beaten me to it on this dvd I figured I'd give it a shot.
Let me start off by saying that I really enjoy this set and while I imagine that different people will take out varying amounts of information, I can't really foresee anybody being disappointed for having bought this dvd. As for the material, let me start by describing each of the six effects taught on this video (there are two additional performance-only pieces which I won't really go into) and then follow up with my thoughts about them. "A la Annemann" A spectator is invited to select a card and place it fairly back into the center of the deck. The magician then hands her an indifferent card from the top of the pack and invites her to place this new card into the deck as close to the original card as possible. With the new "indifferent" card left sticking out of the middle of the deck, the magician turns the pack over to reveal that the projecting card IS the original selection. The magician removes the card and re-caps the effect. This sets off a quick sucession of effects whereby the selected card changes back and forth between the "indifferent" card and the selection about four times in nearly as many seconds. SHIKINA SAYS: I like this trick a lot. Its not a show-stopper, but the effect is clean and direct. This is the type of quick, modular effect that someone could easily insert into pre-existing routines (ambitious card comes to mind). Even as a stand-alone trick, this is a powerful item sure to immediately impress any spectator. I especially like the attention to detail Pual gives about the proper way to address the spectator. "Bar None" A spectator calls stop as the magician fairly dribbles cards off the top of the pack. A card being noted, the magician closes the deck very deliberately and instatnly reveals the card to be on top of th deck (this really does look impossible). The magician deals the selected card off the pack and under the spectator's hands. The magician then removes an indiffent card from the pack and causes it to change places with the selection under the spectator's hands. Very magical. SHIKINA SAYS: Good stuff. Once again, the initial phase wherein the selected card appears on top is a strong item that can be incorporated into a host of other routines. I will definitely use this but may chose to alter the second phase of the routine to match my performance style. "The Trick that Never Hapenned" Basically, a shuffled deck is openly seperated into red and black halfs and each colored half is shuffled Triumph-style. The resulting top cards of both the red half and the black half are placed on the bottom of their respective packets. The trick now starts moving backwards. 1) The bottom cards are revealed to have returned to the top of the packet 2) The packets have righted their "face-up, face-down" condition 3) The reassembled deck is immediately shown to have mixed red and black cards "as though the trick never hapenend". SHIKINA SAYS: A wonderful effect that will probably enter immediately into many people's repetoire. This is the strongest "showpiece" on the disc and you can gauge just how strong the impact of this item is by the reaction of the spectator on Paul's left. "ACAAAN1" THe title stands for 'Almost Any Card at Almost Any Number' and that's pretty much what the trick is. A card is selected and lost (super fairly) with the spectator shuffling the cards. Upon the pack being returned to the magician, the spectator is invited to name any small number. The selected card is found at that number. SHIKINA SAYS: I love this one. Paul says that of all the effects on this set, this is the one he performs the most often. Easy to see why. Its 100% impromptu and baffled me the first time I saw it. There might be better versions of this effect out there, but I've never actually learned a 'card at any number' style routine, so this will definitely be one that makes its way into my "act". "Just in Case" A selected card vanishes from the deck and appears under the card box. The card is returned to the deck, and once again appears below the case under test conditions. As a finale, the card disappears once more from the deck and emerges this time from inside the case. SHIKINA SAYS: Admission- I'm not a huge fan of the card under the box. I know it plays well, but I guess I've always preferred other means of revealing chosen cards than producing them from under, or inside, card cases. That said, this is a nice handling and I particularly like the the second phase where the selected card returns to the bottom of the box. I can see a lot of people liking this effect. "Stumped" Pauls description for this effect is better than anything I could say, so I'll simply paste it here for you read. "Three spectators quickly take a peek into the deck, each remembering a card. The performer tables the deck and can instantly tell each spectator which card they peeked at." SHIKINA SAYS: I haven't watched the explanation for this routine yet, and I have to admit that I'm not 100% sure how its done so that should be an indicator of the strength of this routine. Once again though, I might opt to follow the initial phase of this effect with something more to my liking. Just naming selected cards seems like a sub-par climax. EXPLANATIONS: These are really great. Paul explains each trick sufficiently and what's really cool is the addition of a picture-in-picture style box which gives you a closer look at Paul's hands during the explanation of the methods. Even if there were times that the extra view doesn't add much, this is a thoughtful touch and I would love to see it in future dvd release. SLEIGHTS: Paul does a great job explaining the core side-steal maneouver and makes sure to mention some common pitfalls associated with the move plus the means for correcting them. After each sleight is explained there is a slow-mo demonstration of the move from the performer's vantage point. This is also a nice touch though I admit that I would have loved to see more of those shots come from below the pack as opposed to above. These sleights look so invisible in Paul's hands that sometimes you just feel like you're watching Paul hold the deck, when really, most of the action is hapenning underneath. I still like this feature, and commend Paul for including it. FINAL THOUGHTS: I am very happy with this purchase. The side steal is one of those moves I've always wished to master, but found very few thorough explanations in all my books and videos. In general, I like the style of instructional video wherein one utility move is well explained and material related to that sleight is demonstrated. Paul used the same approach in "Up in Smoke" and both are now highly valued additions to my library. I would also like to thank Paul for the wise decision to add a menu option that allows you to watch the performance of each routine, followed immediately by the explanation for that routine, and then the explanation fot the individual sleights- all without having to return to the main menu. EVERY DVD SHOULD HAVE THIS OPTION! My only critique of this dvd is that I wish Paul would have addressed the issue of sound: many people including myself sometimes produce a clicking sound as our side-stolen card clears the bulk of the deck. I suppose that chit-chat is probably the best remedy, but considering that Paul addressed other common pitfalls, I was surprised to see him not talk about the tell-tale sounds. And, like I already stated, I also would have loved to see more shots taken from below the deck as the dirty work was hapenning. But these are minor criticisms. If you're looking for a well-taught, practical control and some great material to add to your repetoire, you will be happy with this dvd. |
