Lots of people have been asking about this, so , without letting the proverbial black cat out of the bag, I'll at least dump the kitty litter out of it. ... Ewwwww.
Heres' the general premise from the book's description of the effect, I edited a few parts so as to not invoke the wrath of the mods, or God forbid, Docc himself. I sincerely hope this isn't taken as exposure. That is not my intention. If anything, I want to get people fired up about this book, which has 4 other (and generally much longer, more detailed presentations) excellent effects. Overall, it's a short presentation, and leaves lots of room for ad-libbing and creativity. Actually, with everyone recommending left and right that nobody perform this trick, it's hard to imagine anyone would get upset with me for merely describing the presentation, but you never know. EFFECT: The disturbed (I like that description, I resemble that remark !!) mage gives a chosen spectator a little box, locked and sealed shut. The spec is also given a strip of tissue paper with ancient markings or glyphs covering it. The spectator is instructed to burn the paper and bring the little box back to the mage the following day. The next day, the mage shows the spectator the morning newspaper. In the obituary section, a seemingly random name has been selected, with all the usual details: named of the deceased, survivors, etc. The little box is then opened, where another folded piece of paper is discovered, which turns out to have on it, written in red ink (actually, I'd prefer blood myself), a prediction/command of death, naming the very person in the obituary ! The actual method is very simple, but irregardless, think of the impact this would have on a sensitive or gullible person. Be very careful if you choose to do this. But go out and buy Band of the Hand regardless, just so you get the details of the effect, not to mention a bunch of other great effects. I think Band of the Hand is Docc's best work, personally. If you buy nothing else of his, buy this. It was one of my first bizarre book purchases, and one of my favorites still.

A bit of caution. EvilDan, Daemon George and I used to do an obit prediction in our old voodoo seance. It is VERY strong! We had to tone it back because of the effect it had on spectators. If you choose to do this, as Mystician pointed out, be very careful.

On a similar subject, does anyone know where I can purchase BAND OF THE HAND (the book this effect appears in). It seems like everyone is out of stock of it. One shop said that Docc usually sells directly, but his website (www.docchilford.com) isn't up and running yet.
Suggestions? --Jon |

Doc ripped this effect off from an issue of Invocation. I was reading Invocation the other night and one of Docs effects from this book was published there. The next effect in there was this effect with a Voodoo theme by someone else. I purchased band of the hand and do use the Nightmare coin routine but was disappointed to find out that one of the effects had been published years before and another had been ripped off.
Incidently I was never happy useing the magic shop coin gimmick because it was not period (for the nighmare coin thing) so I made my own. http://www.bloodyjack.com (click on the nightmare coin link)

Paisa, its because its super strong, and has the potential to seriously disturb the would be spectator.
Us here in the Bizarre section have the vibes to make this all the more strong...I mean you OTHER magicians may be able to pull this off, but not nearly as strongly as the ol' Baba, Mystician, Midnight, Skin, sinnead, Curator,...well, you get the point. .....can I get a MuhahahahahHAHAHAHAHAHhahahaa... *eh hem* LOL get the ebook, you'll love it. |

Well after the disappointment I got from The $1000. Secret Séance and other Docc products I have bought I am very hesitant to buy anything with his name on it. And after reading the ads for Band of the hand I think I will pass but I would like to hear other opinions on it. I just feel Docc overcharges for the material you receive. What do you guys think? I am I wrong here?
I do have the Invocation, all three volumes. Bloodyjack can you tell me where you found these in them? |

Wait theres an e-book where I will get it right now Gede Nibo
I am also trying to join the bizzare. I have spoken to our great Ol' Baba and he has helped me in the past but I have a hard time trying to find Bizzare oppose to geek books. So I will get this if its in an E-book I might have to wait if it is to be shipped. But Gede Nibo PM if you have any other thoughts on where to go to make this crossover.

So I checked this out last night, Doc is credited for the "Jack the ripper" effect that is the first effect in this issue of invocation. The next effect is called "mail order gris gris " and is the same effect as "murder by mail" with a voodoo theme. To be fair on Doc after looking this up this could be Docs too it is just not credited to anyone.
Even so "Band of the Hand" still contains a bunch of stuff that is just rework of previously published stuff, I felt cheated.

Just incase anyone cares this is in "The complete invocation volume 3" This is not quite as complete as one would think there is another book for volume 1 & 2

Careful there, paisa, I'm not aware of an ebook version of BotH. It could be a pirated edition. I could be wrong too, but an eBook version is news to me.
If you want, I can send you my huge list of bookmarks ("Favorites" to you stubborn IE users), I have tons of magic resource links - check the many Internet stores, you're bound to find the book. Denny's or Loomismagic would be my first stops though. As to why this effect is considered so strong, let's outline what happens: The mage has a participant (I kind of like that better than spectator, especially here) burn a piece of paper with magickal glyphs on it, and take a box home over night. It's discovered the next day that the box had a message in it all along, predicting (actually, more like a command... you'll see) the death of someone, by their full name. That very day's obituary happens to have someone listed by that very name who just died. The particpant is therefore led to believe that they, at least partly, with the guidance of the mage, killed this person listed in the obituary, by black magic. In short, "Hey, wanna do a trick?" "okay, do this..".. next day, "Well, whataya know, that dude you had named in your box croaked when you burned that magic inscription yesterday" Wheeee !! fun ! Let's do it again ! lol ;)

There is no ebook of "Band of the Hand". But I would recommend this little booklet, because the effects are very nice.
Why is the effect so strong? Well, think about that: you are able to KNOW days before who will die!!!!!! Magixx

Well actually, in the original version of effect you kill a person. but of course you can twist it into a "im parting the veil to see how's going next" kinda effect.

This effect might be a good way to prove to my dear aunt the spurious nature of the psycic hotlines she's always calling.
