I am prodominatly a card magician and have disliked coin magic for a long time and still do, however I do perform a handfull just as filler should I ever need to switch decks but that's besides the point. I would like to learn some more coin stuff, my main motivation for this is that I do magic lessons and one of them wishes to learn coin magic, so now I have to learn more of it, I still have some coin stuff to show but I was just curious of references for good coin magic, david roth I know is one, what others.

If you are in New York, you have more access to the worlds greatest coin magicians than you must know. Not only do you have Roth, but you have guys like Sol Stone, Micheal Rubinstein, Geoff Latta, and J. Townsend. All of which have excellent material ranging from simple routines using basic slieght of hand, to the more complex routines.
While trying not to be offended that you can't stand coin magic, I'm sure I can understand your reasoning. Maybe these guys can alter your view just a hair......

I hate to blow my own horn. but check out my site in my profile. I have an e-book devoted to coin magic, and my 2005 lecture notes as well.

In addition to Justins e-book there was also a supporting video of the sleights and routines for his coin magic. Its at additional cost but a good compliment to the e-book.

Modern Coin Magic by Bobo, Tarbell Course in Magic, and Stars of Magic are classics containing good coin magic. For more advanced coin magic consider Steel and Silver by Paul Gertner.

Dude,
If you don't like it, and don't do it (much) then why would you purport to teach it? Most of the guys Eric named would teach the lesson for you, or refer you to someone qualified who will. Am I the only one who thinks there's something completely wrong with this picture?

Coin magic is an "acquired taste". Its really challenging in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it, you'll fall in love with it.
I was and still is primarily, a card guy, but I'm becoming more and more of a coin devotee in recent years because of the beauty of coin magic.

I too agree with Curtis. If you don't love what you are teaching, it shows. Let someone else teach the stuff you don't like.

I agree with Curtis wholeheartedly.
One of my favorite commentaries on coin magic was written by Jamy Ian Swiss in the November 2001 issue of Genii Magazine in a review column... "What is it about coin magic? Magicians love to watch it, are in awe of those who excel in it, and are typically frustrated by the extreme difficulty of it. (Those who are not frustrated just don’t realize how bad they look doing it.) Face it: sleight-of-hand with coins either looks perfect, or it looks like dog-doo, and there is little room in between.” If you are not interested in coin magic, it is probably best not to teach it because most likely will you will ultimately just teach bad coin magic. |

Steve, if you dislike coin magic as much as you seem to, please have the courtesy to explain to your student that you don't practice that particular type of magic and recommend him to someone who does. If you don't like coin magic, you won't like teaching it either; so why would you want to? |
