I feel an urgent need to express my sorrow and disbelief at the unbelievable catastrophe of Biblical proportions in the Atlantic Gulf region. As a survivor of Florida's banner year of 4 major hurricanes last year, in which I lost almost everything, I can sincerely relate to what is happening in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. My thoughts and prayers are with fellow magicians, families and just the general public affected by this disaster. The television coverage is heartbreaking and I am brought to tears as I watch with sadness at all the devastation and ruin associated with Hurricane Katrina.
Please, if you are able, send any cash donations to the Red Cross so that we as a nation can help in the relief efforts and if you are strapped for cash say a prayer and remember that this catastrophe will affect all of us. Many lives will be changed by this as was mine...I still don't have a home since a year ago and I'm struggling with an ongoing insurance settlement with lawyers and I'm not alone in this struggle. Many people in Florida are still settling with insurance issues from last year. Please take a moment to thank God for all your blessings and ask Him to bless those who are in dire need at this time. Thank you. <<<KRaZy4kardz>>>

Nice to see people trying to help out. Not hearing a lot from countries that were quick to call us "cheap" when we didn't send enough to help in "their" disasters!

Anyone know if any of our fellow members are okay? There are quite a few from that region of the nation. And not to forget, Harry Anderson's shop is probably sitting under many feet of water. It was mentioned that thousands are dead now, or thousands will begin dying from disease and lack of food. I send my prayers to them all. If there is anything I can do, I would like to know what it is.

My School (in the Los Angeles Suburb) is already working on taking in students who's schools are now under water or damaged. It brings a tear to my eye to know I may be directly helping some of these victims.

The Red Cross and salvation Army need money. They will distribute it as it can best be used.
BTW - Has anyone heard from Tom Ladshaw? He lived just outside NOLA.

I believe Tom Ladshaw and Jon Racherbaumer made it out fine. Haven't heard from Harry Anderson yet.
The donations have been pouring in like crazy. I live in Houston, and I fear we are in for a tough couple of months. Governor Rick Perry and Mayor Bill White have opened the Astrodome for those people who were in the Superdome. However, there is very little security in the Astrodome area and Mayor White doesn't seem to know what to do about it. This afternoon I was in the vicinity, and there were several displaced people from New Orleans in a parking lot near the dome. They had heard about the dome being used for shelter, and had come trying to get in. They were turned away. There are other shelters available in Houston, but the police don't have all the information they need to get these people where they need to go. The citizens of Houston are opening up their vacation homes, RVs and other buildings to displaced people. It's a real mess over there. I can't imagine how I would feel if the same thing happened to me.

Thanks for the info, Bill.
I heard yesterday that they had considered relocating those people in the Superdome to Houston, and they mentioned doing it by bus. That would be nearly 600 buses!! I don't think there has been a relocation of American people to that extent since the Trail of Tears. Here in the South we are getting a lot more video here than probably much of the rest of the country, because all local stations have their own reporters in the areas. It surely gets fed out, but likely edited. I'm seeing some truly sad and unbelievable things. I did hear this morning that the water level in New Orleans is approximately the same as Lake Pontchartrain, which for what good it is, is a good sign. Repairs and reconstruction can hopefully begin soon. Re - The security issue in Houston: Would the National Guard be available for such a task? The security in New Orleans seems to be virtually non-existent, if you can believe some of what you hear that's going on there. President Bush has all but demanded a zero tolerance policy on looting. People searching for food and other items of survival have my complete sympathy. People walking off with TVs and such, don't. There seems to be a fairly good security system set up around these areas. Authorized personnel are having to go through as many as a dozen check points to get in. The problems are arising from the average people who are now stuck in a wasteland with very little reason to care about others besides their own. Please keep us posted of anything else you hear. ~michael

I have a Svengali pitchman friend that lived in N.O. named "Warpo" he is the guy that sold his magic shop to Harry Anderson. I understand he was still living in the same building as the shop.
If anyone reads this that might know something about Warpo PLEASE let me know via a PM. Thanks Don |

Much of the French Quarter has remained dry. It's some of the high land in New Orleans. Hopefully that includes Harry Anderson's Shop and theatre. I understand that Harry left New Orleans Wednesday morning.
The extent of this tragedy is unbelievable. I've spent as much time as possible just watching the coverage. I've already made a contribution to the Red Cross, and hope that the rest of you will give what you can. Denny Loomis

Our prayers and thoughts are with you all as well. I agree with Brian I wish there were something else that we could do besides send money. I realize it's important but it just doesn't seem like enough.
I heard this morning that Houston is taking some of the refugees and that San Antonio is going to be taking some as well. Mya

I wonder how much aid will be donated by the public and governments of other nations!

We heard this morning that among the donations from abroad, Great Britain, Germany, and Russia have offered aid. Also Venezuela has offered, I think, a million dollars in aid. In the midst of the tension between our government and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, that is a remarkable thing. God bless the human race.

Unfortunately disasters bring the worst out of the population as well as the best. The looting and violence is becoming rampant in the "Big Easy" where the name couldn't be more appropriate, it's easy. Also the death toll is rising as the waters are receding. The nation is reeling from incredible energy price hikes for gasoline, diesel, natural gas and heating oil will be expensive this winter.
As I stated earlier, this disaster will affect the entire nation. The city of NO is out of resources and the mayor is sending out an SOS for basic needs such as water, food, medicine and people are succumbing to the heat and are dying as they wait in line. It's heartbreaking to see this unfold as you watch TV! I am happy to hear the world is responding to this but I fear it'll get worse before it gets better...only time will tell! Please pray for relief! <<<KRaZy4kardz>>>

Hi, I live in Lake Charles, 200 miles from N.O. and we have 2,000+ refugees in our community theater center. Most of them came in by car before the storm hit, but we think we may be getting some more on buses from the Superdome. Our Red cross has been inundated with supplies and volunteers, but there is so much need! These people are sleeping on the floor with no privacy and our facility has limited bathrooms and showers.
We are thinking of opening up a closed Walmart, Stines and possibly our local camp ground. It is organized chaos. My Dad is a Medical Doctor so we I went with him to the free clinic in town and did what I could organizing papers and stuff. I even performed some magic for a restless 2 year old my Dad was trying to examine. The people were very polite and grateful. Please pray for us!

They haven't bused anyone to the Superdome, they have bused thousands of people FROM the Superdome to the Astrodome - the Astrodome is in Houston TX, outside of the disaster area. The people in the Superdome were not bused there, before the storm the mayor told them they could go there as a "shelter of last resort" if they could not get out of town; I believe most of the people either walked or swam there.
As someone that weathered out hurricane Hugo in a tent, you simply have no comprehension of what something like this is like. Nobody has a map showing what houses tax protesters live in - they see people, they rescue them - period. Someone is hungry, you give them food - period. I walked away from Hugo with absolutely nothing that belonged to me, not even my own clothes. I was wearing dry stuff I found in a pile in a parking lot that people dropped off there for us. The one thing nobody needs right now is people trying to use Katrina to push their own agenda, and this includes people trying to blame Bush and global warming for this - this was only a Cat4 storm, more intense storms have hit the US coast long before global warming ever existed. This is mother nature doing her thing, like she has done for millions of years now. JoeJoe
