I have absolutely no money to spend on plans for illusions.

I would like to build a few small things.

Are there any free illusion plans available anywhere? Maybe electronically, website, PDF file or whatever else there is.

If you don't want to link to it here, then please PM me.

I'm not big on illusions or anything, but I believe there's a book called Cardboard Illusions. The book contains some cheap illusion plans.

If you have no money to buy plans, how will you actually build the illusions?

I think the book on cardboard illusions is Gary Darwin's Illusion book. But of course, books cost some dough too.

Even the Mark Wilson book has some illusion plans in the back.

Do you have any magic clubs or groups nearby you can hook up with? Maybe some local fellow magician's could help out. Smile

The Learned Pig Project. You will have to prove yourself. If you are real, they will know. Not everyone gets in.

I think Gene Poinc's site (love his routines, such a sad loss) is still operational and has some illusions on it.

The primary book on carton illusions, which is still cheap; is Victory Carton Illusions by UF Grant. They can all be made from wood too, but they are not as cheap as free freezer cartons. See any large dealer for the book. It should be easy to locate.

Steve,
Have you been to allmagic.com? There is a ton of information on that site. Check every link, for there is enough magic to start your own show. And yes there are some printable props and small illusions as well. Check back often and print or save what you find, because it's not there forever. Most of them are up I think 1 or 2 months at most.
Have a Magical Day....

Plans are cheap compared to building a $100-$2,000 dollar illusion?

Well you know the free plans are not really state of the art or anything. It depends on what your show is worth to you.

If it was me, I would determine how many shows it would take to recoup the cash and finance or lease the proper illusions to ensure success.

the learned pig is good, and keep looking through this section "The Workshop", I've found lots of good stuff here.
As for what to build it out of, some motorcycles come crated in mahogany, and motorcycle dealers/importers have been known to throw away this crating. Also I have seen many pallets that companies also throw away have oak, cherry, walnut, fiddleback maple, etc... wood in them. Now I am not saying they all do, but if you look around for a while you'll find some nice wood to use. It's called creative scavenging, when money is short, you do what you have to.

I have designed and just built a box that appears empty to an audience. An object can be put in it and then a different object appears in it all in view of the audience. The original object has gone. I am going to use this box for producing a dove, after a ceramic dove is place in the box. It cost me about $20 Australian dollars to make. Let me know if you are interested.

Gary Darwin's "Inexpensive Illusions" is anout making illusions using Black Art principles, but there is an investment in the black art material. Black Art is a great way to go for inexpensive illusions as they can be made from close up pads to full size stage illusions. There is a companion video to the book which is worth egtting as it shows the illusions in action.

The Balck Art Maven is Donn Drake. He sells a great book on Balck Art and also makes Black Art Illusions and backdrops. His web site is: http://blackartsecrets.com/

The only problem with balck art for larger illusions is that it takes an elaborate setup from backdrop to lights. This can take time to set up and tear down.

There has been a thread about Black Art on the Café, so you should do a search for it, as well as for back drops because the ideas will apply to a black art backdrop.

Some of the illusions in Mark Wilson's books come from U.F. Grant. Mark also ahs a series of videos on illusions, including inexpensive ones.
