Hi... in the past 6 months, all the adult shows I have been booking are all mentalism shows.. I fell in love with ii and the reactions it gets. I have been doing my homework and buying a lot of books and manuscripts. I have a job where I am in front of a computer for 8 hours with internet access.. I have been visiting a lot of mentalist's websites and media reviews and a lot have something like "he even tells you where you took your last vacation!"
This is what I want to learn about.. I saw Gary Kurtz here in Ottawa 6 months ago and he did this as well... The person stayed seated, and he told her what she did and where she went on her vacation. Maybe I am being thrown off cause the only live version I have ever seen the spectator didn't write anything down. Is this standard? Does the effect usually require something to be written down? Or is this cold reading at its best? Any ressource where I can find this would be great..Thanks |

Yeah I am familiar with the term..... But it dosent make sense in my head.. How can you do it in every show? What are the chances you'll get that info pre show every night?

Cold reading is an easier option given the ground work required and the skills involved. Hot reading is not as difficult you might think given the verious methods of gaining information. Think about it. Where would you be perfroming? At corporate event? Earle did a show for McDonalds several years ago. It was a big one. He contacted the people who were running the event and asked if he could get a list of those people who were attending. What he got was a computer print out of each and every person who was in attendance; their region and store location, as well as the time that they were in the company. Now...what use could you make of this information, given the availability of the internet etc.? Needless to say he not only killed them, but had a fantastic time burying the bodies.. Are you in the same venue on a repeat performance? How about holding a raffle of some sort? What kind of information is placed on a raffle? Again, think of what information you're looking for and how you might get it. Are you in a hotel? Are the people in the audience staying in the hotel? How do you think you'd be able to get any information about them? Are there any VIPs? Perhaps the person putting on the event might be able to tell you a bit about them...using this information along with cold reading.... Well you get the idea... There are many ways of getting information..some subtle, others outright blatant. I was doing a "Hot" reading on the internet a while back.I had two people speaking with me, one of them was feeding me information as I typed to his friend, who didn't know that I was being fed. It was the most fun I had fully clothed in a long while. Hot reading doesn't begin to describe it. We were burning the house down. |

If you could track where a person makes their credit card purchases you might have a good idea where they spent their vacation.

Well, to get that information, you have to either break a few laws by stealing mail out of the mailbox. Or you can do it the legal way and dig through the trash. Once the can hits the curb anything in it becomes up for grabs.
A lot of con men used to go through the trash of dept. stores and would get credit card reciepts, even actual imprints. They would then use that information to make new cards or use the numbers for phone orders. I think most businesses are now required to shred that information before its thrown out. All is not lost however. With the dawn of the information age, a lot of records can be bought online. With only a name, you can find out the SS#, last few addresses, phone #, criminal record, etc. Plenty of things to give you a fiery hot reading. The question is, is this ethical. that's up to you to decide. Chad |

Crazy..... as if someone would go as far as looking through trash to MAYBE find something they can use in a show...
I wonder why theres not more written about this "where they went on vacation" thing.. Its very consistent in the media's mentalist reviews... |

The police can check where and when a credit card is used. If they can, I'm sure some computer whiz can too.
Ethical...OF COURSE!!!!!

If some 'performer' or 'entertainer' went through my personal info - I'd be VERY angry.

If one but does a vanity google (type in your own name) you might be amazed at the info that is available, add that to the map searches and aerial images that can show how many houses to the corner from yours, and if youo have a pool in the yard....
Amazing what a little info can turn up quickly, and legally!

Eric, it doesn't matter if noone finds out!
The princple of invading someones personal details without their knowledge is nothing but disturbing to me. Surely I can't be alone on this? Tom |

They will never know... You will have a killer effect.... it dosent have to be anything huge like credit cards.. I found out a man's hotel room number the other day and used it when I was doing walkaround at the hotel's restaurant..Is that wrong? Is that invading someone'e personal details??

Finding stuff I have no trouble with. But intentionally rummaging through people's private details and property I do not believe accords to my ethics.
Tom. Whether people find out about what you have done or not is irrelevant |
