I have mixed a lot of mental effects in my magic repertoire over the years, but now it is time for me to really get serious about mentalism. I reached this conclusion after reading the book "Making Money From Magic", in which the new term, "mengic" was coined and used.
So I want to get serious...cold reading, psychic demonstrations, spoon bending, and a myriad of things of which I am only peripherally aware at the present moment. Where do I start? Can anyone suggest a "Must read" list, and perhaps a "Must Purchase" list of indispensables for the field? Requesting expert guidance...please help. Thanks!

Hi Daffydoug, why not start with a search of this forum for type the stuff you want to perform. That should give you a good something to go on.

Listen to me carefuly :
You'll need to do 4 types of demonstrations during your magic shows if you'd like to appear as a the real thing : For your Precognition tests, Get a Mental Epic Board and Routine : Make sure to get the most eye-catching board you can find and make sure to always make the 3 choices as disparate as they could be and let them change their mind at any time (your last choice should be a card). For your PK effects, use a zombie. And again, make sure it is the most glitering one you can find. There's nothing like seeing a disco-ball floating in mid air. For your Telepathic effects, get a commercially available book test and make sure that the thought of word is Lumberjack. And finally, if you would like to do some clairvoyance and get the whole spectrum of ESP presentations for your show, you could use the cups and balls and use any psychic approach that you may like or even the three card monte (to also introduce some cards to the show, which are a must!). That will do it and you will have a fun show for everyone. Trust me : There's nothing better than a zombie for all your PK Needs Hope this all helps Juan D |

Doug, a really good place to start is Anneman's practical mental miracles and 13 steps to mentalism by Corinda. These books are cheap and still have great ideas. Just read those two books, practice and perform a few of the items and get really good at them, then decide for yourself where you want to go with the whole "serious" mental thing. Hope that helps, James

All eight of Osterlind's dvd's are a MUST in my opinion. With that alone you could make a living and/or "get serious" as you suggest. Just try not to copy his style and find a way to be yourself or make the performance uniquely yours.

Good luck.

Second the nomination of Osterlind's DVDs, along with his books (priceless!).... On the other hand, there is a reason why Osterlind recommends Annemann's classics (Practical Mental Effects, aka Practical Mental Magic) and Corinda's 13 Steps.

Thankyou, Alexandre. Truthfully, Osterlind's DVDs have been on my "Want it Badly" list for a while now...soon as I come up with the bucks.

I would also check out Bob Cassidy's Mental Miracles DVD, this has some of the strongest mentalism material in existance within.
All the best with it! Kennedy

Ok, my apologies to everyone.
Obviously my extremely-sarcastic comments didn't play the way I'd have liked. The little smile was just too little for the large tongue-in-cheek comment Again, sorry and my apologies. I'll refrain from posting in the future. Good Luck and once again, sorry. Daffy, I'm sending you a PM with some thoughts Juan D |

Daffy,
Go for 13 Steps, and Practical Mental Effects. Great books to get started with! Bob Cassidy's DVD is also the best out there, as Kennedy said! I am currently in love with all things with John Riggs' name on them! Great stuff, and only a limited time to jump on his wagon before it drives away forever! Paul h. |

DD, do yourself a big favor and first start with 13 Steps & PME... that's the biggest chunk of information around and it will give you the knowledge and workings you need to start and move on. Consider those two books the Tarbell Course of Mentalism.

Daffy, as I said in my PM to you, I would suggest the following path in this order :
1st Phase : Getting wet and learning what works for you - Self Working Mental Magic by Fulves - Stunners by Becker - Messing with Minds 2nd Phase : Learning the classics and creating your own stuff. - Pratical Mental Effects - 13 Steps to Mentalism - Tarbell (Vol 4,5,6) - Mind, Myth and Magick 3rd Phase : More advanced stuff - Psychological Subtleties - Peek Performances - Artful mentalism There you have A complete library with EVERYTHING you will ever need and enough material for a life time. In fact, any phase will do it for you (you can get complete acts out of everyone of those books). Hope it Does Help now Regards Juan D |

I have found a few places that sell Larry Becker's "World of Super Mentalism" for around $30. This book certainly has some great material within its pages. Basil |

If you are looking for a Stunners Plus! type book and able to pay that kind of money for it I would recommend Syzygy over Stunners, don't get me wrong I like Stunners alot, but there is material from many more sources, writers and styles Syzygy.
